It’s a misconception—the coach did high volume in high school therefore kids today need to. Best practices are required in the classroom, but not the weight room?
Many coaches are doing way too much volume in the weight room and have no idea
Here’s what you need:
- 6-8 exercises
- 20-25 total sets
- about 30-40 minutes of work
That will get the job done

At minimum, the S&C coordinator should have the PE endorsement.
Too many schools treat it as an afterthought and not an opportunity for advancement/growth.
“Oh you played football in college? Great, run our weight room.”
Then wonder why performance doesn’t improve…
A school would not take the English teacher & put them in shop class-loose with 30+ kids using the welders or saws. Why do we let it happen with S&C/PE. 🤦🏾♂️
Not a matter of if, but when - someone will get seriously hurt. We have to do better - kids deserve more!!

Cliche but truly “for the kids”, I grew up in a single parent household and watched my mother make countless sacrifices for us. That model has really shaped me as a teacher/coach.

Same with sport coaching. You can have the college playbook, but the wheels fall off when you can’t teach it.
“But it’s from a national championship program…blah, blah, blah.”
You can have a good strength and conditioning program on paper or borrow a program from another coach, but if you can't coach it your program is worthless! Learn to coach the exercise, quit yelling and screaming and being a bully!!

Football teaches you to be “flexible”. So many teammates/coaches to learn from. Not to mention the flexibility it takes to adjust schedules, starters, opponents week to week.
