Thank you so much to everyone who has been praying. It was announced to the congregations this morning that I've been appointed Minister in Charge at St Hugh's Bermondsey and Succentor at Southwark Cathedral. More formal online announcement to come, but Evan and I are delighted!
From a priest who makes Holy Week happen in a cathedral:
- Remember it is about the people, not about the things happening perfectly.
- Remember Jesus already died. You dying of overwork and worry won't add anything.
- Naps and time off are a sacrifice of thanksgiving and praise
Almost every time I put my phone away I take an accidental screenshot of the home screen. Anyway, on our anniversary today, at every time of the day I am infinitely joyful that this happened.
@jessphillips
My late grandmother told me a few weeks before she died she'd be taking to the streets if she could leave her flat! Knowing and loving her, I didn't know whether to be delighted or terrified by the prospect of a revolution with Grandma at its head!
Please pray for the soul of Karowei Dorgu, the Bishop of Woolwich, who died yesterday. He was a very generous Bishop to me and Evan. He loved theologians and loved cathedrals. He loved Jesus. He loved long sermons.
On my way home from a new colleague's installation, I was stopped by two women out on the streets looking for a priest. Long story short, it was a privilege to absolve and anoint their aunt C before her death. And now this tired priest is going to have a cold shower and sleep.
This man. This man bought a lovely wooden insert to finally organise the cutlery drawer in our latest home. If you ever want to know how to express “I love you,” to an autistic person, Evan will show you how. I cried and jumped up and down with joy.
Between 5 and 9 kids each sunday for a month. A new person wants to join the serving team. People wanting to come even when it's difficult. In a small urban church, these are wonderful things for which we give thanks! Signs of new life at St Hughs Bermondsey
@SouthwarkCofE
Day one wearing the terrifying glasses. I look terrifying. But they are life changingly wonderful. I dont think I’ve ever had this much energy at the end of a day before!
I came to faith through Christians who welcomed me in, fed me pizza and wine, and argued with me about everything in the world. Holy Spirit, fill your Church with the spirit of hospitality and fun.

R: The Lord be with you.
V: The third time already.
R: Lift up your hearts.
V: We cant even lift our arms.
R: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
V: Can we do so from under a duvet?
Going to be discharged today! Thank you everyone for your prayers. More rest and some healing to do. But the bulk of the infection has been defeated! Woo!
Also, the night nurses at St Thomas' are now some of my favourite people in the world. Totally ace.
I hope the incoming Dean of Windsor and the Bishop of Horsham in the Diocese of Chichester will find out how the organisation of which they are pres and vice-pres has just endorsed conversion therapy, an abusive practice which the CofE has condemned.
Would appreciate a gentle prayer. Four deaths in my family in five weeks, all people of riper years, but still hard each time. Will be taking some time next week for a committal and some retreat.
Now for a choir practice. Yippee!
This year for lent I am:
1) starting a new job and meeting loads of new people and changing all my rhythms.
That is it. That is my spiritual practice. Don't overburden yourself with "things to do" or "worrying about not doing" this lent. Walk with God.
Merry Christmas! And a blooming well done to all the servers
@Southwarkcathed
, particularly Grant. We managed to do 360 degree thurifering in synchrony tonight, which was SOOO much fun!
Please pray for the soul of my Granni, Elizabeth, who died on Tuesday morning in Winchester.
Also for our grandparents Joan, Betty, Mac, and Brian, who also died this summer.
It is strange not having any grandparents left, all of a sudden.
Great joy, and an answer to prayer. Evan has been appointed Associate Vicar at
@stmaryabbots
@dioceseoflondon
. I am as relieved the job hunt is over as Evan is delighted that the right job has been found!
Yesterday was my 2 year anniversary
@Southwarkcathed
. Time flies! And I have since got the hang of wearing a cope. Grateful thanks to all who have made these first 2 years such an opportunity for growth and service. And to all who continue to support and encourage me here.
We have a dean!
It has been announced that
@CanonOakley
is to be the next dean of
@Southwarkcathed
. Please pray for him and us, and for the next phase of our mission and fellowship as a cathedral and diocese.
Im furious that some footage of the rehearsals for our cathedral carol services on Sunday and Tuesday has leaked.
@KathrynCanonsOn
wanted her performance in the spangly dress on a flying platform to be a complete surprise.
So, it turns out I've been carrying around a colleague's compact mirror in my bag the past few days, and not in fact the parish pyx. Just another day winning at life in Southwark.
Such a warm welcome from people at the cathedral and St Hugh's, and so lovely to have friends and family there as well. VERY EXCITED to get stuck in tomorrow morning.
A very warm welcome to Thomas Sharp newly licensed Succentor
@Southwarkcathed
and Minister-in-Charge at St Hugh’s Bermondsey

with the Choir on outstanding form singing the magnificent anthem by Philip Moore: All wisdom cometh from the Lord
The other day a lady on the train was miming to her companion very obviously, "Oh no, look at those guys holding hands!" So I laughed loudly, and said loudly enough for the whole carriage to hear, "Sorry, I find it really funny how unsubtle that lady is being talking about us."
Happy St Hugh's day from
@StHughsChurch
@Southwarkcathed
! St Hugh, famous for saving the Jews of Lincoln from an antisemitic mob, and for befriending an otherwise particularly violent swan, who became his pet and symbol. A gentle pastor, whose gentleness was his strength.
Having spent my entire life savings on rent recently, this millennial has not spent his disposable income on avocados, but on chonky shoes. So immensely excited for the winter!
Superlative leader comment in the Church Times today.
"IF ONE is looking for scandal and outrage in church circles, almost the last place to look is where people, priests or laity, live in same-sex relationships. ..."
Some of the disciples tonight sat in experienced silence. Others were uncomfortable. Some muttered fervent prayers. Another slept on their parent’s lap.
@StHughsChurch
@SouthwarkCofE
Im trusting the member of my family whom this is for isn’t on twitter. But, just to say,
@Southwarkcathed
does have the best merch for churchy gifts that aren’t too churchy!

Please pray for the 45 to be confirmed (of which 13 to be baptised) this afternoon at
@Southwarkcathed
by
@BishopSouthwark
@SouthwarkCofE
May God, who received them by baptism into his Church, pour upon them the riches of his grace!
Ive been struck in many of the farewells for the Dean how reconciliation has been a part of his ministry here, as well as the enthusiastic joy we know and love. He was appointed after Dean Colin died suddenly, and saw us not just through the pandemic, but two terror attacks. ...
30 years ago over 80 priests were ordained
@Southwarkcathed
in three back-to-back ordination services. Good to welcome some of the priests from that class of 1994 back to celebrate 30 years of the ordination of women as priests in
@SouthwarkCofE
@BishopSouthwark
Happy St Nicholas day! The origin of Father Christmas (Santa Claus), he is famous for punching a heretic in the face at one of the church councils. A collection of the best St Nicholas memes for the day!
The Province of Central Africa has become the next province of the Anglican Communion to pass the legislation paving the way for the ordination of women. Pray for candidates for ministry and for all involved in training and selection.
Delighted to be asked to admit a child to communion on Christmas Eve. Feed your children the food for the soul, just as you do not starve them of earthly food!
Newsflash: there is a party parachute in the cathedral office. The succentor's diary is now full for the rest of the morning trying to get it back in its bag.
It is taking a bit of getting used to that this is where we now live. After quite a difficult period, we seem to be beside still waters for a bit. Which has come as a complete surprise.
On the 6th Anniversary of the attack on London Bridge, profoundly moved to pray with local people and civic leaders at the olive tree planted "for the healing of the nations." The dents on our doors are still there. The scars are still there in our community.
Good to pray for the 17 to be ordained deacon
@Southwarkcathed
@SouthwarkCofE
as we crack on with some proofing and planning. Excited for them, their families and friends.
@JayHulmePoet
When I was first a curate, we were confused when praised on our ecumenical working. Turned out that everyone assumed my training incumbent was the anglican vicar and I must be the Roman Catholic parish priest, because anglican priests are women and RCs are men.
I have spent today mostly unjamming a photocopier which has already had two visits from the printer doctor this week. This is ministry. Not the ministry I expected. But it means wonderful things can happen for people further down the road.
Was just paid to shout the words, "My little finger is thicker than my father's loins" at 150 people in the cathedral's nave. Some days I have to pinch myself that this is my job.
I also want a light to flash by the lectern: "This is funny. You are allowed to laugh."
There is a list of things I *should* be doing today as long as my arm. But I am going to cook lunch for my dad and sit with a book. Ecclesiocapitalism can just stand back and watch for a day.
Remembered at Mass
@Southwarkcathed
this morning all who will be ordained deacon and priest this weekend, as well as our regular intention for those who live under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. Now off to Kings Cross to support
@NathanaelBart
as he is deaconed

Gosh, my "for 2024 show us you in 2014" is unrecognisable at "friary weight". I went to theological college in September of that year and was back to my normal weight in about four weeks.
What a wonderful way to start the feast of St Clare. Mass with Sisters Sue and Gina, who live round the corner, and bishops Peter and Onesimus before they travel back to Korea. Holy Clare, and all the Franciscan saints, pray for us! Alleluia!
The garden theme of the holiday continues. We visited someone else’s. Blooming marvellous,
@hamhousegarden
! And you’ve inspired me to make a rhubarb and raspberry patch at the back of the garden next year.
So good to be in
@CoastlandCurate
’s parish for a retreat in a Franciscan House. Because I needed something to wrap up a statue (don’t ask) a quilt has come with me. It is going to be a cosy retreat.
The CofE still can’t actually bless couples with the Prayers of Love and Faith in the way that Rome has now approved actual blessings. I feel like I’m in that Mitchell and Webb sketch: “Are we the baddies?”
With the Declaration Fiducia supplicans published today by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith and approved by Pope Francis, "it will be possible to bless same-sex couples but without any type of ritualization or offering the impression of a marriage."

Thank you to the staff of G7 at Southampton General
@UHSFT
for your care of my grandmother, and to the stellar
@ChaplainsUHS
for rushing your oils to us so we could anoint her before she died. It really made a huge difference.
