It’s eerily scary how little talk or hype there is in the media about the potential shutdown of the St Lawrence Seaway during the height of its season. The main thoroughfare from the Atlantic to the Great Lakes is about to be closed, affecting two countries flow of commerce.

According to sources, the condition of BBC Georgia is not good. A 3rd tug, Ocean Aqua, is en route towing a barge with pumps that will be used to pump out water that has filled the ship’s hull. Engine room is flooded. Luckily in low water area or situation would be much different

As of 00:01 am, the St Lawrence Seaway is closed due to a strike by union represented employees at the 13 Canadian locks. All ship traffic from Montreal to Lake Erie is now restricted to only Lk Ontario as the river and Welland Canal locks are unavailable.

Update (4pm) - Ocean tugs will depart Montreal tonight to assist in the salvage of NACC ARGONAUT. It is believed the ship has sustained damage and taking on water. There is a visible list to the port side. Traffic will remain stopped overnight.

Word is navigation will resume as early as 7am on Monday. Lock passage expected to become available soon after. Pilot assignments are being made and ship turn-of-order to be confirmed. Expect a lot of ship traffic over the next several weeks as Seaway season winds down.
