This is actually an example of what might be called a 'dead unicorn trope'.
People think they're beating a dead horse but it's original existance is rarer than the think.
Ex: Hero slays dragon and gets princess.
Sounds like a common fairy tale right?
Now name one. 1

This particular idea seems to be a mix mainly of St George and the Dragon, Perseus and Andromeda, and classic fairy tale structures.

Arthurian is filled with this thanks later knightly idealization where the heroes in most documents are quite flawed or have very alien beliefs. Not helped by numerous efforts throghout history to rewrite that narrative that continue to this day.

Watched Boorman's Excalibur film and the best way I can summarize it is as ‘a trip’.
It feels otherworldly. It feels almost unlike a movie and more like an opera or play, based off something more in the style of Mallory where in things happen and there’s certainly interpretations

Time for a hot take. The reason phrases like anti-hero are losing meaning is the same as why we're not getting many heroes in fic lately.
Heroes reflect the virtues their culture values. Beowulf was a mighty and valorous warrior big into glory- some find him arrogant these days 1
I have come to the conclusion that I dislike antiheroes. Historically, literary heroes have been role models that readers can look up to and admire and I see no reason to discontinue that tradition. The exception is antiheroes who genuinely become better people by the end.

at least two award-nominated books this year are about v poor protagonists but are written by authors who were never poor.
appropriating poverty for accolades is disgusting & i don’t know why we don’t talk about this more.

I am once again reminding people that 'look there's a flaw' isn't a reasonable defense againt 'mary sue'.
The problem is that sues warp the story logic to favor them. Korra absolutely does this. She's a sue.

The Beast doesn’t start out as an honestly nice guy, he starts out as Gaston in a beast costume and then changes.
This is reflected in the curse’s origin. In the Disney version, the Beast is a jerk to a random fairy. In the original, he resisted seduction to a wicked fairy.
