Last weekend, I went to Toronto Island with a group of my best gals and we picnicked and drank bubbly and strolled about as women in the city do. On the car ride home, someone asked me how the day was and I replied, "delicious!". I bubbled on about the joys of describing wonderful things with out-of-context adjectives. And it dawned on me that language is so vastly accessible, yet rarely do we use it to its full potential. We make up rules and follow them. What happens when we stop? Does a hot woman become grained, like leather? Does a tart lemon cake become pointy? Does a bright sunny afternoon turn pigmented? As writers, it is our responsibility to bravely step into the world of possibility that language offers. Do not stay on the sidewalk, walk into the forest. Hike far and wide until you find a day worth describing as delicious.
