The BCCI’s decision to not travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup should serve as a reminder, that Pakistan Cricket has not only survived but thrived despite India’s best efforts to isolate Pakistan. Contrary to popular opinion, the PCB has leverage in this relationship.
There aren’t enough legitimate international cricket teams for the ICC to suspend one of them.
If Government Interference is a serious concern, the ICC should look into how Cricket is governed in Pakistan and India.
This Pakistan Team deserves a lot of credit for developing a strong fighting spirit. Pakistan Teams of the past with bigger names would have quit on Day 4.
Azam Khan’s innings today is a consequence of forward thinking management and a decentralized structure that is incentivized to develop players. Prior to this innings we confined Azam Khan to a T20 Destroyer of Leg Spin. He can be so much more than that. (1/3)
Cricketers Specifically in Pakistan are underpaid.
They have no health insurance or job security.
No one should criticize them for trying to make as much money as they can while playing cricket.
1. Let PSL Franchises Pay Transfer Fees for Local Players.
2. Remove the Emerging Category from the Draft.
3. Incentivize PSL Franchises to develop their Own Cricket Grounds and Academies.
4. Foreign Players Should Be Signed Outside the Draft.
If a Spinner can’t give you control he’s useless.
If a Spinner has a High ER in Domestic Cricket he’s telling you “I can’t put the ball where I want to.”
If a Spinner has a High AVG and SR he’s telling you “I don’t yet understand the art of taking wickets.”
Why would Azam Khan or any other Pakistani Cricketer commit to Pakistan Cricket, when Pakistan Cricket doesn’t commit to Azam Khan?
The instability forces players to think about themselves and their families.
Dropping Azam Khan in the Dead Rubber of a Dead Rubber Series Says Everything You Need to Know About Pakistan’s Approach Towards “Experimentation.”
For the Record, Dropping a Player After Two Bad Outcomes Isn’t Good for Player Development.
Usman Khan left the ILT20 and a contract with the Emirates Cricket Board to play for Pakistan without a Contract or any guarantee of selection.
He’s also banking on the Multan Sultans and its current ownership who only have a 1 Year Lease left on the Multan Franchise.
The truth about Quetta is that they acquired talent and didn’t build a Team. That batting lineup doesn’t make sense 1-8. If you select two foreign openers than you can’t have Bangalzai. If you have Iftikhar than Hafeez becomes redundant. If you have Sarfaraz he can’t bat low.
Mohammad Rizwan was dropped by both the Lahore Qalandars and Karachi Kings because he wasn’t considered a T20 Player. What changed? His position changed. Rizwan’s ability doesn’t translate as a lower order batsman. Positions and Talent Evaluation Matters.
@BillSimmons
This is why the NBA Lottery doesn’t work. The middling teams that made good moves in an effort to remain competitive deserve an equal chance to land VW over teams that are blatantly tanking. IMO VW landing on the Pacers, Jazz, or the Blazers is a far better outcome for the league
The answer to improving PK Cricket had nothing to do with Foreign Coaches, Better Pitches, 6 Teams, or Departments. Imran Khan had one job, that job was to legally disassociate PK Cricket from Pakistan’s Unstable Political System. He Failed Because He Believed He Knew Better.
Babar Azam’s Presence should simplify Roster and Lineup Construction for your team. Where Karachi once opened the batting with Joe Denly and Babar, Peshawar surrounds him with attacking batsman like Haris, Saim, and TKC.
Abrar was always going to be a very good leg spinner. But now that he has clearly emerged, he gives Pakistan a leg spinner in Test Cricket and a different dynamic in ODI AND T20 Cricket. Although just the beginning, Pakistan should not relegate Abrar to one format.
@TheRealPCB
Confining the PSL Draft to Lahore is a mistake. The PSL Draft is a unique touch point in Pakistan’s Cricket Calendar and it’s an opportunity to grow the PSL and Pakistan Cricket Brand inside and outside Pakistan.
Mistake 1: Dropping Fawad Alam
Mistake 2: To Correct that Mistake They Dropped Azhar Ali
Mistake 3: Those Mistakes Prompted a Double Shift in Lineup Construction with Babar Batting at 3 and Rizwan at No.4
This type of Ad-Hoc Decision-Making is Unsustainable.
Over the last decade there was a real effort to isolate Pakistan Cricket. PSL is a reminder of a resilient and vibrant nation who built a league in the most challenging circumstances.
Pakistan’s Domestic System is producing talented international cricketers. PCT doesn’t evaluate those cricketers correctly, doesn’t put them in positions to succeed, and more often than not selects the wrong players. This is recipe for underperformance.
For Pakistan to Thrive in ODIs, Rizwan Must Open Alongside Fakhar.
Doing so allows Pakistan to build a more diverse and less rigid Middle and Lower Middle Order.
@Santokie89
There is no media outlet that currently covers West Indies Cricket. The Caribbean Cricket Podcast has covered West Indies through thick and thin.
The deserve a ton of credit!!!
Domestic Cricket in PK should be City Based and along the structural lines of the EFL. There should be 8 Teams in Div 1 and 8 Teams in Div 2. Subsequent Divisions should be created by developing Strict Expansion Guidelines. There should be 7-9 different Domestic Comps.
@aliktareen
The National T20 should be an ongoing competition that is played home and away throughout the Domestic Season. It’s place in a poorly structured Domestic Calendar has reduced it to preparation and practice. Moreover, there needs to exist a universe outside international cricket.
Mubasir Khan has gone from being a Part Time Off Spinner to much more than that this past season. IMO he’s one of the most talented batting prospects in the country.
For IU to win PSL, Mubasir and Zafar both need to play.
Trading Your Best Player is an Organizational Red Flag.
If you’re trading the player willingly that’s a problem. If you’re trading the player unwillingly because the player doesn’t want to be there that’s a problem.
Overall, PSL Franchises should be learning from both of these teams. They hired competent people to Run Cricket Ops, Hired Top Coaches, Built Deep Teams, and Competed Like Animals.
Don’t Forget that Naseem Innings!!!
@Ben_Wisden
Outcome Hunting at its Absolute Worst.
Decisions like this expose Cricket’s Failure to think deeply about ideas such as Lineup and Roster Construction.
Shaheen has been OK as a Captain, but he hasn’t been helped here by Poor Management Decisions.
He’s essentially going into every game with a 3 Man Attack. It’s hard to win Cricket Matches when 40% of the game is a lottery.
When Building a PSL Team, you want to invest in these Foreign Archetypes
- Ultra Aggressive Opener
- Middle Order Batsman
- Lower Middle Order Power Hitter
- Mystery Spin
@huwzat
The Counties and the Three Formats have unlimited potential. The focus on the Hundred while understandable, is misguided and poorly executed.
The Hundred is a Pop-Up Store.
Cont’d: The first step to improving Corporate Governance requires removing the legal mechanism that connects the PCB to the ever changing landscape of Pakistan’s politics.
When Sohaib Maqsood Bats Well, he reminds us of what could have been.
Like Haider Ali, Maqsood was pushed down the order to play the hitter role by the PCB despite playing at 3 for his entire career. That decision negatively impacted his career arc.
The Death Bowling and Tactics from Quetta Gladiators has been Outstanding.
On PZ, If you lose chasing 200+ and Asif Ali doesn’t get a bat, you haven’t paced your innings correctly.
On Haider Ali, this was a good opportunity to buy low on a gifted player.
Pakistan Cricket seems to operate in extremes and that is partially where talent goes to die.

@OfficialDGISPR
@MashwaniAzhar
There Isn’t One General (Serving or Retired) that has either the courage or worse the humanity to do the right thing.
NOT ONE!!!!!!!!!
Hasnain Has Only Touched the Surface of his True Potential.
Because of his Bowling Style, Hasnain has the ability to be a Multi-Format and Multi-Phase Bowler.
Azam Khan’s Early Struggles have nothing to do with Azam Khan. No player, especially a batsman can function at a high level when he’s batting on guillotine.
Pakistan Cricket as a whole needs to rethink Batting as a Subject Matter.
India was the best team at this WC But the best team doesn’t always win these tournaments.
A penny for Jay Shah’s thoughts. He engineered competitions, doctored pitches, censored the media, and hijacked the sport to give his country a competitive adv. He deserved better!!
Waqar Younis and Misbah make so much sense on television.
Yet despite their influence on Pakistan Cricket for the better part of a decade, none of that logic could be seen in their decision-making or actions.
The Last Pakistani Bowler to Instill Fear in Opposition Batsman was Shoaib Akhtar. Almost 25 Years Later, Ihsanullah although different in nature is carrying that legacy forward.
I think Rameez Raja’s decision to speak at the PSX is unprecedented. I would go so far as to say the PCB’s commercial operation should be based in Karachi rather than disconnected in Lahore. Parallel: Manchester United’s commercial operations are based in London not Manchester.
It’s not the Captain. If Babar makes the same mistakes over and over again, what is the purpose of the Coaching Staff?
Why isn’t there a mechanism to correct those mistakes leading up to a game?
Why isn’t there a mechanism to make adjustments during a 7 Hour ODI?
This Asia Cup highlights two things.
1. It highlights how little the powers that be in India care about Cricket as a Sport.
2. It highlights how little the powers that be in India cares about the Cricket fan. They seem to view the Cricket fan with pure contempt.
The Key with Haider Ali is that he’s not an out and out power hitter. He’s a Run-Scoring Batsman with Power. When you try to reverse that, you lose him completely.
Islamabad United is a good landing spot for him to rehab his career.
The NSK is a Cave.
Pakistan’s Financial Capital should have a State of the Art Cricket Stadium and Complex for the Players, the Fans, and the Media.
Logic would suggest that the PCB’s HQ or at minimum the Board’s Commercial Apparatus would also be in Karachi.
While Indian Investment and the Indian Market is important. The goal of cricket everywhere should be to broaden the tent.
The Homogenization of the Cricket Market will not end well.
1. If you’re a test batsman and want to improve, Play 50 Over Cricket
2. If you’re a 50 Over Batsman and want to improve, Play T20 Cricket.
3. If you’re a T20 Batsman and want to improve, Play T10 Cricket.
4. If you’re a T10 Batsman and want to improve, Play 4 Day Cricket.
It’s Important to Note that the IPL isn’t a brainchild of the BCCI. It was created in response to the ICL and was built by some seriously smart people at IMG.
There are Three Ways to Consistently Win Cricket Matches
1. Build a High Quality, Diverse, and Deep Bowling Attack
2. Build a High Quality, Diverse, and Deep Bowling Attack
3. Build a High Quality, Diverse, and Deep Bowling Attack.
When Shan played in the ODI Series against Australia prior to the last World Cup he should have retained his place as the next opener in line for selection.
The Job of a Chief Selector isn’t to Select Players. His Job is to BUILD A TEAM that can consistently succeed in all conditions.
Also, His Job Description Doesn’t Include Pacifying the Media, the Fans, or the Cricket FRATERNITY.
Pakistan are blessed with immense depth at the keeper position. That includes Sarfaraz Ahmed.
But, there is no world where Sarfaraz is a better keeper or batter than Mohammad Rizwan in any format.
I believe that Elite Test Cricket can coexist with the Other Formats and Franchise Leagues.
That said, Shaheen Shah Afridi makes upwards of $5K for playing a Test Match where he bowls 40 to 50 Overs.
Shaheen Shah Afridi gets paid around $20K a match in the PSL to bowl 4 Overs.
