I had a "Chilean Sea Bass" moment today.
If you're not familiar with the story, it's quite interesting. I came across it thanks to
@rorysutherland
.
The “Chilean Sea Bass” used to be called the Patagonian toothfish, but they changed the name to make it sound better to consumers.
- Affitti e spesa convenienti (meno in centro)🏠
- Il costo della
In 2022, my small side business hit $2M in yearly sales.
It took 8 years, while working a full time job.
Here's the fun story, with practical tips on business.
I used to own a food truck. We made wood-fired pizza.
Incredible pizza. Perfect branding. Bad location.
We were losing money. I tried to relocate it, but I was in debt and eventually had to sell the truck.
I lost $100k in this.
Cheaper than a Harvard degree, but a more
I bought this café a year ago as a side hustle. It was on the verge of bankruptcy, and I gave it a new life.
I rebranded it, remodeled the kitchen, revamped the menu, and improved the operations.
Acquiring the café business from the previous owner cost $75k. The renovation
I was considering buying an apartment in Dubai, but then I changed my mind.
The rent is 160k AED.
The price is 3.2M AED.
If I invest 3.2M AED in 1-year US treasuries, I could earn a risk-free 160,000 AED per year and use it to pay the rent.
Why take a risk in real estate if
I spent $3000 on this picture. Check out the final result!
Last year, we sold pineapples and coconuts on the beach worth $62k, without pictures.
This time, we have pictures. We’re targeting at least $100k.

Solo
Interesting statistics from our beach club yesterday:
Revenue: $22,700
Visitors: 574 people
Occupancy rate: 143%
Lost towels: 32 (worth $250)
Total F&B spending: $4,059
Average F&B spending per guest: $7.07
There's significant room for improvement in the average F&B spending
I've been living in Dubai for 10 years. I like it here. If you’re young and ambitious, Dubai is the place to be. It’s a city with a vision that inspires; the economy is growing, and everyone is hustling.
- Food is not expensive if you know where to look.
- It’s safe.
- There
October’s sales at the cafe increased significantly!
October 2022 = 16,900 $ (previous management)
September 2023 = 17,700 $
October 2023 = 63,884 $
We have 68 items on the menu. Here are the top 10 performers (that amount for ~50% of the sales):
1. Coconut Mojito: $5,502
2.
Our first event as a brewery:
- We sold 40 kegs.
- We served 960 liters of beer.
- That's 2,000 pints of beer.
- We made ~ $10,000 in sales.
- Three Italian celebrities drank our beer.
- We saw a lot of smiles.
It's a wonderful business. It's not easy to make money, but we're
Our beach club generates $2.5 million in sales per year. Only 5% of this revenue comes from online sales.
In 2021, we sold $17,000 worth of tickets online
In 2022, our sales reached $126,000
In 2023, we're on track to sell $160,000
Benefits of selling online for our club
Our brewery's e-commerce site received its first order!
After being live for two and a half months and receiving ~2000 visits.
The website is clearly not performing well, but I'm still happy 🥳
One step at a time.
The most famous yoga class in Dubai!
Six years ago, we launched a yoga event at our beach club with the aim of building a community. We charge $10 per person, but the funds are used to organize beach cleanups in Dubai.
It's a non-profit event.
We regularly have 40 to 50 people
I often hear people say that the United States seems like a late-stage empire.
But, I see a country that's:
- energy independent
- home to the world's leading companies
- the birthplace of AI
- sends more aircraft into space than any other country
- built on a core of
To build a successful business, you don't always need an innovative idea.
Sometimes, taking an old idea and doing it better is the key.
Consider this: Amazon began with online book sales. Search engines were around before Google came into play. Apple didn't invented phones.
Dubai makes you lazy. In the last week, I have:
- Booked a cleaner to clean my house using JUST LIFE
- Ordered lunch on Deliveroo 3 times
- Booked someone to iron my shirts
- Had my dry cleaning picked up and delivered
- Didn't do groceries even once; all delivered
- Had my car
Dubai is incredibly busy right now!
Last year, our beach club was bringing in an average of $50k per week. Now, we're up to $120k per week.
We have stepped up our advertising efforts, but I don’t think that’s the sole reason for the increase in sales.
Thoughts?
@rohindhar
The same price in Dubai gets you a 2 bedroom villa + study + garden + community pool + 2 parking spots, 20 min away from the city center, airport and beach.
Men's fitness should focus on surviving real life:
- lift heavy weights
- run fast to escape dangers
- carry weights long distance (daughter gets injured hiking)
- pull ups to overcome obstacles
- basic fighting
- swim
The less yoga poses you know, the better.

Wars are fought by Governments. Not with money they have though. They borrow the money issuing treasuries notes. Investors buy them. They’re basically borrowing from their citizens future. With Bitcoin, due to the capped supply, no investor will ever lend you its Bitcoin.
We often hear the success stories of entrepreneurs who made it because they're more viral.
But for every entrepreneur who made it, there are many who lost their savings, marriage, freedom, time.
I know three guys who lost a lot.
Guy 1: gave up his career in finance to start a
I'm buying a villa in Springs 4, Dubai.
It's not because I see it as an investment (the cap rate is 4% and only God knows where real estate prices are headed next), but because I truly want:
- a pool
- a barbecue
- a personal studio
- a guest room
- a garden
- additional
Our digital marketing agency, ClickStudio, is shaping up nicely!
Our team includes: a digital marketing nerd who’s also a graphic designer, a photographer/videographer, a project manager, and a PR specialist.
The best part? My existing businesses are covering the costs, so
A bunch of you were curious about how we got our café up and running and what it cost us. So, let me give you the details, step-by-step:
- We entered into an agreement to buy the café from the previous owner and signed an NDA for the due diligence
- The revenue was $112k in
We made an offer to buy this space located 5 km outside Milan.
It has a rare combination of permissions for both industrial and commercial use.
We'll move our brewery there and finally open a taproom serving beer and pizza. I’m already in love—hope the seller accepts the
Our beach club did $2.5M in sales in 2022.
Here's a glimpse into our marketing strategy:
1) We have an individual specifically for hotel relationships and PR. She meets with concierges, distributes vouchers and brochures, and invites journalists and influencers to our beach

My fiancée and I love living in different countries. We don’t view it as mere tourism. We take the time to interact with local people and businesses and often learn a new skill or sometimes the language. We especially enjoy experiencing various hotels, Airbnbs, and diverse
This is how effective management can impact the sales performance of a café:
We took over the café in November 2022 and spent a few months getting to know it. In 2022, the café made $120K in sales
We rebranded the café, changed the menu, and relaunched in September 2023

Pricing strategies are really interesting:
- My fiancée raised her photoshoot prices from $125 to $225 per hour, and she's getting more bookings now
- I was at a beer shop recently and bought a 33cl lager for $20, thinking it must be the best ever. It was great, but I'm

My 75-year-old parents live in a house with three floors. I strongly opposed their moving to a smaller flat on one floor with an elevator because I believe doing stairs daily is what keeps them in good health.
We went from selling $20,000 of mocktails per year to more than $150,000!
Here’s how:
1) Design Instagram-friendly drinks
2) Find catchy names
3) Take professional pictures
4) Design a beautiful menu
5) Highlight your best-sellers
Bu Qtair restaurant in Dubai, before and after.
It was a famous small place in a parking area. Fishermen cooked fish and shrimp there. Often, you had to wait in line for an hour to sit down.
But when they upgraded and moved to a new “better” place, it wasn't the same. It lost
One of the most successful marketing campaigns I’ve ever executed:
During the summer, our beach club operates at a mere 10% occupancy rate.
I posted on Facebook and Instagram, inviting all Italians living in Dubai to join us for free. The only condition is that they followed us
I have been living in Downtown Dubai for eight years.
I have seen three cafes/restaurants fail in this exact location.
I know they have spent at least $150,000 to set up shop, and they will burn through about $10,000 per month in the first year to keep it afloat.
If they
I just met a very humble man in Dubai from Pakistan. He started from nothing and now probably makes around $250-300k in net profit per year.
He began by driving a 3-ton pickup truck. He noticed the demand, started his own company and leased a truck.
Five years later, he owns
We visited a WeWork coworking space for the first time.
Need a space for the new agency team.
It's around $300 per month per person for a shared desk, Wi-Fi, and free coffee.
The coworking area is loud and not very cozy.
We ended up working in the hotel lobby next door:
Ten down-to-earth, straightforward business lessons:
1/ Start as small as you can, and validate your business idea right away.
Sell from day one: I didn't make a business plan, create a brand, or design the space. I just went to the beach and started renting out umbrellas.
Want to make some real money?
Here's a tip: Don't just start a new business.
Instead, find one that's already there but needs some work. Maybe it lacks a decent website, AI integrations, or solid marketing.
Buy it, fix it up, and see how it goes!
Too many people are busy
2/ Make it easy for people to contact you: Your website should have buttons for WhatsApp, Telegram, email, SMS, chat on the website and phone number, along with a physical address.
The information must be visible and always respond quickly.
This is my second-favorite café in Dubai.
They have managed to create such a great mood!
This is what I’m aiming to create at Sea Level Cafe 🌊🏄
I don’t like the kombuchas, but the Nitro iced teas and coffees are excellent!
3/ Make it easy for people to buy: Display prices clearly.
Feature a giant "BUY NOW" button.
If you need to send a quotation, do it fast, including payment instructions with the quote.
Accept cash and credit cards.
Send payment links.

3/ I managed to raise $15k from a family friend to pay the deposit for the rent and to purchase beach umbrellas and loungers.
Bless him; I couldn't have done this without his support. I had about $10k in savings, but I would never have risked it all.

What about the hidden costs of renewables? I’ll give you a few: renewables requires gas plants backing, solar panels dismantling is costly, dependability from gas import. Not to mention renewables are subsidized too. We need more nuclear and more renewables.
Business karma is real.
Be genuinely good to your customers and employees, give a little extra, and make sacrifices.
Sometimes, you can make someone's day better and contribute to making the world a slightly better place.
It's not always about sales and profits.

We've added flags to the beach cafe for increased visibility. We're promoting our best-seller, "Juices", and our coffee, which hasn't been performing well due to Starbucks being right next to us.
7/ It may seem obvious to some, but many businesses still lack a website!
Prioritize your website's copywriting. Create content with SEO in mind.
The site must be fast.
The user experience should navigate visitors through the website, leading them to a clear call to action.
2/ That same day, I chatted with the beach's security and got the contact info for the person who managed the place.
I immediately called and offered to lease a section of the beach to rent out umbrellas and loungers. They agreed the very next day: $30k for one year.
This jet ski rental kiosk pays $50,000 every year for their location.
You can increase sales putting up a big sign that says "Jet Ski Rental" with the brand name smaller below it.
Maybe some bright flags to make it more visible could help.
Honestly, a lot of small business

Been living in Düsseldorf for a while and I disagree with you. Women wearing hijab are everywhere and I've seen them being treated respectfully everywhere. Occasionally you find someone rude but it has nothing to do with race.
Google in the UAE does not permit us to advertise our beach club website because of excessive nudity in the photos. Bikinis and bathing shorts are not allowed.
Generative AI integrated into Photoshop came to our rescue!
I've seen this man walk by our cafe many times. Today, I stopped him and offered him a juice.

1/ When I was 25, I visited Dubai for a vacation and spent most of my days at a popular beach called Kite Beach.
I wanted a beach umbrella because of the heat, but I couldn't find any.
5/ Hire an accountant early: Monthly insights into P&L, balance sheet, and KPIs are crucial. We prioritize cost-cutting.
If accounting is crucial for an umbrella rental business, imagine how important it is for a more complex one.
I bought a fully fitted food truck today. It was listed for $19,000. Here's how the negotiation went:
"Is the truck still available? I'll buy it tomorrow for $12k, cash."
"Make it $14k."
"Sorry, my budget is a strict $12k. It's that or nothing."
"Ok."
Our brewery pop-up store lost $5,000 in the six weeks we were open.
Our break-even point was $44,000, but we only sold $39,000 worth of beers and liquors.
We lost energy and time.
The only good thing was gaining brand recognition, but it cost us $5,000. Next year, we will
4/ Make incremental improvements: Since starting,
we've established a brand,
developed a website,
created an Instagram page,
purchased top-quality gear,
invested in landscaping,
organized events, and more.
Do it with a sense of urgency. A great product sells itself.
The best tail risk hedge, it's a small farm in the countryside with a source of water, seeds, animals, guns, a really good library, a kg of gold and a bunch of bitcoins.
