As a fibre artist and a botanist this is so cool! ♥️🧶
Alizarin is a red dye, derived from the roots of madder. It was used throughout history, mainly to colour textiles. Textiles dyed with madder have been found in the tomb of Tutankhamun and also among the ruins of Pompeii, Athens and Corinth.

We thought it was extinct, and then it was found near Australia in 1994! I learned about it during undergrad and then saw it for the first time in Glasnevin botanic garden. This picture was taken in RGBE!
