Permission for abbatoir to offload 400,000 litres of treated wastewater into the Boyne every day overturned. 🙌 “Meanwhile, the river Boyne continues to struggle with the demands put on it by human activity” “and only a mammoth effort will restore it”.

Ireland at risk of being fined over insufficient wastewater treatment. 16 wastewater agglomerations are not complying with EU wastewater law, which Ireland needed to have complied with by 2005, 20 yrs ago! Throughout our rivers & seas suffer.🤮💩🐟

CSO Environmental Indicators for '24 - rivers & streams in Ireland with high water quality decreased from 27% in 1987-1990 to just 16% in 2020-2023 In '23, 1% of urban wastewater received no treatment down from 41% in 1997-1999 - but should be 0% by now!

Good to see the @coastwatch_ire surveys indicating nitrate levels lower in coastal areas. Less chemical fertilisers, some reduced sewage & weather all possibly playing a part. Not good to see less animal life sightings & issues with pollution reporting.

Water quality has "diminished by 46% since 2010" in Tipperary. In some rivers "the ability of wild brown trout & salmon to reproduce was now being compromised". Restoring Lough Derg's water "to good quality would make it much less expensive" to treat.

The IFI has found that a Iarge amount of 8,000 escaped fish farm salmon are sexually mature enough to breed with wild salmon threatening future generations ability to survive! 450+ entered rivers. This in a critical region for wild Irish Atlantic salmon.

Ireland has the highest rates in Europe of STEC, a potent E.coli linked to private well, septic tank & herd density. 600,000 people at risk. 🤮 0.25% of septic tanks inspected annually, half fail, half of these are a risk to health & the environment. 🤮
