actually, it wasn’t just a dozen LA Times employees who signed, it was more than three dozen. and yes it’s true we’ve been taken off coverage, which in effect removes a great many Muslim journalists and most of not all Palestinians at the LA Times from coverage.
New: Reporters at the LA Times who signed an open letter criticizing Israel have been told that they cannot write about the Israel/Gaza conflict for three months

Associated Press staff received a memo this morning that @vv1lder is no longer with the company, after conservatives rallied to get her fired because she was part of Students for Justice in Palestine in college
I support @vv1lder, the young journalist who conservatives are now trying to get fired from the AP because she was part of Students for Justice in Palestine in college.

Keep in mind that California just approved a new heat safety standard for indoor workers, but Newsom administration stepped in to have the rule exclude state prisons and jails — meaning incarcerated workers and correctional staff will not be subject to the same protections.
Michael Broadway, a Black man incarcerated at Stateville prison in Illinois, died last Wednesday, partly due to extreme heat. While incarcerated, he earned a degree from Northwestern. A reminder that the climate crisis is here. Even if you don’t feel it, the most vulnerable do.

as a muslim and as a journalist ,,, I’d like to point out that the most effective way for for the U.S. to counter islamophobia would be to stop sanctioning rampant killing of palestinians and other populations racialized as muslim in the global south.
Taking on hate is a national priority. Today, @POTUS and I are announcing the country's first National Strategy to Counter Islamophobia. This action is the latest step forward in our work to combat a surge of hate in America.

jfc. Israeli forces on Sunday killed one of the Palestinian journalists who provided “indispensable research” for Committee to Protect Journalists report released earlier this year that found a pattern of IDF lethally targeting journalists and evading accountability.
The Committee to Protect Journalists is deeply saddened by the killing of Palestinian journalist and press freedom defender Bilal Jadallah, a previous contributor to CPJ’s work.

former U.S. congressmen justin amash had relatives - including a baby - killed in Israeli air strike on saint porphyrius orthodox church in gaza in october. wild imo to have barely seen coverage, only cursory news briefs. where is the detailed narrative, the emotional profile ?.
I was really worried about this. 😔 With great sadness, I have now confirmed that several of my relatives (including Viola and Yara pictured here) were killed at Saint Porphyrius Orthodox Church in Gaza, where they had been sheltering, when part of the complex was destroyed as

Other than in quotes, we are not allowed to say Palestine in the LA Times. Policy, codified in a 2005 memo, directs Palestine be used “only to describe the territory that existed from 1923 to 1948, or the historical region (the land of Palestine). It is not a recognized nation.”.
Washington Post article which touches on DSA’s endorsement drama changes the word Palestine from DSA’s statement to Palestinian territories. “The Palestinian territories solidarity movement” LOL. Are they not allowed to say Palestine in the Washington Post

If you just want gore, then throwing tantrums about an indie reporter making measured and ethical choices makes sense. If you want some visual for historic purposes, you have that! Leave me alone!.

wow. CA legislators holding hostage millions in public funding to push University of California to curb pro-Palestine protests. keep in mind UC students over the yrs have frequently done occupy/encampment style protests on everything frm South Africa apartheid to tuition hikes.
NEW: @UofCalifornia leaders signal they won't tolerate encampments this fall & will consistently enforce campus rules on protests. State is holding back $25 million until UC notifies all students about rules & reports on efforts to enforce them by 10/1.

casting doubt on Gaza death toll is a very serious allegation for the US president to make w/out proof, esp given the numbers seem conservative. to say palestinians writ large are lying is effectively an incitement of violence against not only folks in Gaza, but palestinians here.
Biden doesn't have confidence in the Gaza death toll: "I have no notion if Palestinians are telling the truth. I'm sure innocents have been killed & it is the price of waging war. Israel should be incredibly careful to ensure they're going after the folks propagating this war."

yep… execs at LA Times, Associated Press, Washington Post are among those that punished or otherwise forced journalists to retract their names from a .similar letter .
This is good. But several of these executives’ news organizations punished or censored their own journalists who were saying this months ago.

as a reminder, what the letter urges is v straightforward and in clear alignment with core industry standards and ethics by a) condemning killing of journalists & b) calling for fair, accurate, non-racist coverage of Palestinians.
Some 30-odd LA Times journalists are being punished for calling for baseline journalistic norms to offset biased, racist coverage and to condemn the killing of tons of journalists trying to do their jobs. Read the letter here:

Also, because so many Twitter users — a number of whom were paid by the Bloomberg campaign — were posting identical content, Twitter cracked down on 70 pro-Bloomberg accounts on Friday after we inquired about the practice
Twitter just suspended 70 accounts; identical social media messages posted supporting Michael Bloomberg’s presidential campaign violate its policy against platform manipulation and spam. Scoop from @jeffbercovici and me:.

What's less clear is what would happen if Prop 22 fails. Uber, Lyft, DoorDash etc have been resisting state law requiring them to classify workers as employees. They've poured ~$200 million into it, making it the costliest ballot initiative in US history. (via @ryanvmenezes)

yes. have seen so many newsrooms including my own conflate the two in recent weeks. no doubt anti-palestinian racism & islamophobia are often linked, but they are distinct. often journalists sub in "islamophobia" & erase actual dynamic of anti-palestinian racism. we must be clear.

Prop 22, if passed, would cement the status of gig workers in California as independent contractors, depriving them of the full slate of benefits & protections they should be getting per current state law. @VanessaMartinez & @ruhlmuk analyzed the data and illustrated the pay gap:

this investigation is sweeping and so horrific; it includes literal children who work as garment workers in Los Angeles, where they stitch “Made in America” tags into J. Crew shirts.
The US is seeing an unprecedented wave of migrant child labor right now. Thousands of kids are working overnight in dangerous factories for brands like Cheerios, Fruit of the Loom and Ford. They're here alone and they're being failed in the most basic way.

memo also instructs reporters “to steer clear of the term ‘refugee camps’ to describe areas of Gaza …The areas are recognized by the United Nations as refugee camps and house hundreds of thousands of registered refugees.”.
The New York Times actively refuses to use terminology that accurately describes Israel's occupation of Palestine. They even avoid terms like "occupied territories." Everyone should be clear about what the Times is doing here: not journalism but propaganda.
