MASTER A SKILL AND TEACH THAT SKILL - Freshman want to make the team - Sophomores want minutes - Juniors want to score - Seniors want to win This is a tough dynamic to navigate and the first problem to solve when building your pillars/foundation of your culture.

Players viewing actions conceptually, versus what is 'my role' is difficult to teach. My process is to explain the spacing template, and then what we are trying to do to the offense or defense, as whole. After this, it's right into SSGs or constraints led approach going

I think on a larger level, players knowing the ‘why’ behind everything you do as a coach is the ultimate goal. Why are these our pillars? Why is accountability important? Why do we blitz the ball screen? Why do we 45 cut? Why do we play a drop coverage? It’s human

KPIs can be a Coach's LIFE BLOOD: Shot quality and shot selection are critical to both sides of the basketball. Disregard the year in the following graph because in 2018 we ~ leveled off with 3 point production. Most teams at the varsity level of HS and > follow a similar

Most timeouts are soundboards for coaches to express their current state of emotion. As a general rule, timeouts should be used to counter the current state of emotion to create equilibrium. Love Alex’ point on generalities : 👇

How can you deliver more effective timeouts? 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 > 𝐺𝑒𝑛𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑙𝑖𝑡𝑦 It's crucial to use highly intentional language and provide players with a clear & concise framework for improvement. Coaches, what are YOUR keys to a great timeout?

@WITNESSKJ So there is actually people that think it's an opposing owners job to help Lebron win rings? And if he doesn't, this is interpreted as protecting MJ? How is this even a talking point, regardless of which side you want to be on. 🧢

Recent @WeberStateMBB commit 6’9 David Hansen of @cta_west on his #OfficialVisit to Weber State University. A long agile shot maker who can stretch the floor & move the ball well within the offence. Great stamina & keeps his head on a swivel on D. Could be an impact guy early.

A lot of people see Dan Hurley's half court offense and are in awe of all of the actions and play design. And they should be. But... Before we all hit copy paste on every Twirl/DHO/Crackback we see UConn run, it's important to realize the IMMENSE precision and development

We don't want players to be the 'same guy' at the start of the next season. They need to bring something more. We expect this; it makes our teams better. 'Go to camps, play club, lift weights, shoot 300 shots, etc.' It's MORE important for coaches not to be the 'same guy'.

Nate Oates went to the step up, 51 PnR 3 or 4x in a row with Nelson. Completely changed the game. Incredible adjustment.

@BenStinar Adding Mikal Bridges to an eastern conference semi final squad is nice, but it doesn't move the needle against a team like Boston, a healthy bucks, or Sixers. They will be positioned very similarly to where they were last season.

GET YOUR HIGH FIVES IN. There is nothing more rewarding than helping a player improve their shot, in whatever capacity that looks like for the coaching staff. But.... The only universal, empirical evidence that WE KNOW INCREASES SHOOTING % is PHYSICAL TOUCH. 🤯 According

Athletes with good sleeping habits gain a huge advantage over athletes who have poor sleep hygiene. Sleep = 🔑 On average, in-season student-athletes are getting 6.27 hours of sleep nightly while 8 hours of sleep is recommended. *Athletic performance: Poor sleep is associated

It's actually crazy how innovative both Quin Snyder and Will Hardy are. The Jazz have hired coaches as well anyone for the last decade.

Seeing UConn dominate the NCAA Tournament with their non-shooting big in the corner of a horns alignment I’m reminded of the Utah Jazz who had a lot of success using a non-shooter on the perimeter as a dribble handoff threat as his defender sags off, unable to help on the play.

As a COACH (and as a person), you have a BRAND whether you want one or not. Be cognizant of it at ALL times. Think of how you view these 5 coaches: Dan Hurley Thibs Spoelstra Darvin Ham Doc Rivers We ALL thought of the EXACT same characteristics for each of them,

AS A COACH: Take off the ex-player/parent hat and put on the scientist/CEO/support dog hat. - We assume that playing the game well directly correlates with teaching the game well. - We also assume that coaching our own children directly correlates with their best interest.
