Yesterday marked one year since me and my family laid my brother Evan to rest. He died due to a heroin overdose, from a dose that would not have been fatal to a regular user according to the coroner.
There is still so much that needs to be done, however .... 🧵
This is my brother Evan a few months before passing away due to an accidental heroin overdose.
On days like this people line up to take potshots at people like him
Evan was not a 'drain on NHS resources'
He was a much loved brother and son who should still be with us.
I'm on
@STVNews
tonight talking about drugs, the death of my brother Evan and what better support could be offered to people who use drugs & their families, big thanks to
@stvsharon
for organising +
@SDFnews
for their advice & help.
@YvetteHenson
@ellieredpath
If everyone did this the economy as we know it would completely collapse. Your choice was your choice and I applaud it but it shouldn't be a matter of extreme sacrifice to have a roof over your head that isn't dependent on the whim of your landlord.
@YvetteHenson
@ellieredpath
And that is fantastic and commendable. However the vast majority of landlords are not like yours and it is now extremely unlikely that anyone on 3 jobs would be approved for a mortgage these days, much less be able to save due to rising cost of living.
Thinking of my Mum and Dad, as well as every other parent who has lost a child to overdose, drug related harms or violence.
Until we get serious with drug policy in Scotland there will be more deaths and more pain.
#NationalBereavedParentsDay
Extremely refreshing to see a government minister defend unapologetically ScotGov spending on Heroin Assisted Treatment - we cannot be cowed by talking points manufactured by newspaper editors designed to further stigmatise those most in need of HAT & by association all PWUD.
@JockGlasgow
This isn't a zero sum game. I would support a Tesco workers strike too. How do you know all of these members vote Labour? Statistically unlikely at the very least. A rising tide lifts all boats and anyone who cares about workers anywhere should stand with them.
Was a real honour and privilege to chair today's proceedings - however the best part of the past 2 days was meeting so many other families + seeing a real force for change take shape and connections get built ❤
"Do you fancy coming to our
#FamiliesOnTheFrontline
conference, Gavin?" "Yes? Great! Any chance you could chair the morning of Day 2?" "Yes? Fantastic! Just to let you know we're expecting up to 200 people, and the Minister for Drug Policy is the opening speaker!" ...
Tough day, 2nd Christmas without Evan, missing him loads. Can only hope that next year less people lose their lives to overdose and that we can make more progress on providing quality accessible drug use + mental health support. I also hope that those in prison for...
@spicyvegbaws
He blew his top when I called him out for his shit attitude about hiring stuff, funny to see a year+a half down the line he's still having the same issues.
Stigma towards people who use drugs continually delayed my brother accessing vital mental health services that could have saved his life. Dual approach needed to save lives.
@HumzaYousaf
@MhairiBlack
The consequences of the drug war are endless but the one that stands out in Scotland is the needless loss of life, the endless suffering of 1000s of families every year 💔
@JockGlasgow
Who the union supports is irrelevant here when it is low paid cleansing workers fighting through the structure they have chosen. Do you think any of these workers saw any of the money skimmed via that debacle? Many of them would not even have been in their current role.
Would an overdose prevention centre have helped him? Sadly he isn't here to answer that question.
What we do know is that they work to prevent death and that the people who access them are hugely in favour of the services and pathways they provide, whether they are using or not.
There is an attitude that to be deserving of help someone should be in the process of stopping their use of drugs - that never worked for Evan and if anything put up more barriers.
Thousands of families would cherish the opportunity for one more moment with their loved ones,
Grateful and honoured to attend tonight's

Why is it not feasible? Do you know how much money in taxes is dodged by the wealthiest people in this country through a myriad of financial maneuvers?
Was a weight off my shoulders to speak about Evan in public last night but has hit me like a ton of bricks seeing it in this article. Thanks to
@patersonHT
for bringing all our stories to light.
Please join us on

for a candle 🕯 lit vigil in George Square on Wednesday the 31st of August 2022, at 7pm.
This is a time to come together and mourn 💜 🕯

My family has made a donation to

for their Lights of Hope Xmas donation campaign. Please consider a donation if you have been affected by alcohol or drug use in your family, they do really important work and offer loads of practical support

Unfortunately you have no way of proving that, what we can prove is that Tesla's autopilot and shitty manufacturing has killed people.
@CllrDempsey
Hi Councillor Dempsey, I ask that you speak to people who use drugs and their families to understand the harms of criminalisation on them and how it actively works to stop those experiencing negative effects from their substance use from improving their situation.
Was a tough day last year and a tough day this year, thinking about every one of the 1051 people who lost their life due to drug related causes last year in Scotland.
Huge respect and power to all the families and friends affected who will be dealing with the aftershocks...
Really really pleased to announce that
@crew_2000
have offered me a place on their board and that I cannot wait to get started.
Please check out for a wealth of information on safer substance use plus...
Hi everyone - myself & my family are taking part in the Kiltwalk this year to raise money for

@glasgowfilmfest
This is really just the worst kind of pandering to current wave of anti-Russian sentiment and you should be ashamed of yourselves. What do you hope to achieve with this?
@sian_eleanor
If you want to save the planet you should be supporting the strike and telling Edinburgh council to pay essential cleansing workers a better wage - not by helping them to keep this kind of essential work paid unfairly - please rethink your position, it is counterproductive
@AndrewJMullen
@Eamonnmolloy3
Means testing means those in need are kept waiting and not helped. Take your right wing bollocks and get to fuck. You should be angry at the Michelle Mone's of the world, not fictitious working class scam artists you have made up in your head.
Shameful reporting from you
@GrahamGGrant
and not the first time you have decided to stigmatise and shame some of the most at risk people in the country.
No report of any of the successes of the HAT program or any desire to help others - instead just this vile nonsense

OK- you should be forced to liquidate your 5 bedroom house with no one in it then. Either through property + land value tax or forced sale. Selfish of you to hoard.
The Tories have caused this mess of drug deaths across the UK through impoverishment leading to addiction, heavy handed drugs policing that destroys families, massive cuts to NHS services and a failure to acknowledge the evidence for major drug policy reform.
It makes me angry..
Two years ago, Nicola Sturgeon admitted to taking her 'eye of the ball' on Scotland's drugs deaths - but now deaths are on the rise again.
Our Right to Recovery Bill would guarantee treatment for those who need it and is backed by frontline experts. The SNP should back it too.
@PeterKrykant
Full solidarity Peter, really amazing what you are doing. Shame on Police Scotland and Glasgow City Council for their NIMBYism to the detriment of public health and continuation of vile stigmas against those who use your services.
@ccwild79
Great interview on C4 news from you - thanks for speaking out against the suggestion that pepper spray is the answer - kids shouldn't be having chemical weapons used on them
One of the biggest challenges in a family where substance use becomes problematic is a difficulty seeking support, whether you are the one who is experiencing issues related to substance use or you are caring for a family member who is, great initiative from

Spare me the thoughts of politicians and commentators who have never lost someone close to them to this country's failed 'tough on crime' drugs policy.
They don't know what they are talking about, they haven't lived it and don't understand the reality for those affected.
I wish every day that I had more conversations like this with Evan in the hope that things may have turned out differently ❤️
Please talk to your family & friends about the risk of overdose and try to have a plan in place. Get some Naloxone for your home as a first step.
Sometimes, something as simple as starting a conversation about overdose with those around you can be liberating, enlightening n potentially life-changing. With just 2days to go til

If you work in the industry you know there is plenty of money flying about, especially in late night Glasgow City Centre venues. They can spare the cash - plus it helps keep staff safe & happy
@David_Jamieson7
I knew it was only a matter of time before you came out to support a classic 'racism but don't worry it's all a bit academic' charlatan like Goodwin.
Good left wing politics doesn't involve letting them shout their garbage as loud as possible. Its about not giving them oxygen.
@EmilyThornberry
@montague90
Is it 'theatre' to nail your colours to the mast and support trans people against a vicious monstering government seeking to whip up a frenzy of bigotry and hate for their own divide and conquer ends?
If it was just theatre you should have played the part and made a stand.
I think that, far from our grief being exploited, that the voices of those who have lost a love one to drugs or alcohol are essential in making the political case for greater investment in services and treatment.
A huge number of people in Scotland view people who use drugs...
@PLACEEdinburgh
@DAaronovitch
Yep never gets discussed properly - i lived under a short term let for a time and it was the single worst living experience of my life. Loud parties, constant confrontations with guests when we asked them to keep it quiet, police not even bothering to attend - it was horrific!
I think we should be wary of pushing for a right to rehab when that rehab is a quagmire of privately owned 12 steps aligned quackery.
When Tories in Scotland are pushing for something I think it's our duty to ask 'who really benefits?' to the tune of millions. Track record.

It's actually very simple. It is the same reason why a wrecking ball is large and heavy and not small and light. You are far more likely to survive being hit by a sedan than a 4x4 assuming a similar impact speed.
If you can't understand that I don't think you should be driving.
@markjenkinsonmp
Disgusting comment. Do you think sectioning is a punishment? Psychiatric care institutions are at breaking point, due to your government's brutal cuts to public services. How do you think this makes families of those in those institutions feel?
Had a brilliant day at the kiltwalk - 23 miles done and dusted and on the way home now,
Big love to

Dumbarton crew for giving us a wee boost when we needed it!
Thanks to everyone who donated ❤️, time for some food and my feet up pronto!

Just you get back to work abolishing the need to pay for shelter, food and safety and the rest will fall into place then. Why seek to make life more difficult and dangerous for SWers than it already is? You act like sex work is a cause and not a symptom.
Had a great evening attending

Male support group then rushing to the Hydro to see the world's greatest living artist Kendrick Lamar, don't let anyone tell you that you can't have it all!
@MikeGapes
Mike to paint the insitutional sexual abuse of hundreds of kids as the fault of the left whilst numerous other sexual abuse scandals have occurred in this country under a number of local governments is quite frankly sickening. No word of solidarity or justice for the victims...
@AConstanceSNP
Hi Angela, thanks for posting this and for your current work on this issue. My brother was one of the people this report identifies, aged 25 at the time of his death. He was attempting to access proper treatment for both his drug addiction & complex mental health problems...
My heart breaks for the families and loved ones affected by this tragic loss of life.
We need a much more sensible conversation about drug related harms inside our venues and clubs - on site testing and harm reduction work must be included as well as an acknowledgement...
Hesley Group's directors received a total of £2,076,556 (companies House accounts for Hesley Group period ending 30th June 2021) whilst children in their care were subjected to horrific abuse and neglect.

I live 2 mins away and I am glad that we are helping to house them in the watermill. Everyone deserves a safe place to sleep at night regardless of where they are from.
Why do you want them to be on the streets this winter?
Thank you for reading all this - we miss Evan every day but me and my family can seek some sense of purpose in sharing our story and helping to shatter the illusions around drug deaths.
Evan would be 26 now, still so young with so much to offer.
Encouraging and bold action from the Scottish Government. Proven health interventions such as expansion of heroin/diamorphone assisted treatment and the set up of Overdose Prevention Centres are a huge step forward if implemented.
Today is International Overdose Awareness Day, our staff and volunteers are at The Tannahill Centre, Piazza Shopping Centre and on Paisley High Street, chatting to the public about the risks of overdose, naloxone and signposting to local support services.

same tired patter here, such a weapon. £9 an hour is justified because he will 'give a raise if they are good' presumably only after proving they can take his abuse

How fucking dare you to put a woman's welfare to the backseat in favour of forcing a by election to try and get some centre right twat in a seat. Hang your head in shame.
@unitetheunion
Sorry what the fuck is this? I pay my dues in part to ensure that workers aren't flung into dangerous conditions. The reason so many people are being pinged is because the virus is rife, the app had the same sensitivity all through this pandemic, why is it only now an issue?

Pathetic hard man act, a disgrace to the legal profession and happy to associate with cruel right wing bigots. Go take a long hard look at yourself.

... more harm reduction resources delivered through these services may also have reduced the chance of what ultimately caused his death, has this been looked at? It involves more than naloxone.
His name was Evan Heron and me and my family miss him more every single day.
I'd also like to thank
@stvsharon
for broadcasting Evan's story. It was an experience me and my family will not forget.
I'd also like to thank
