Figured it was time to update this again.
Hi, I'm Steve, I'm the (soon-to-be) Lead Background Supervisor on Netflix's Castlevania! In my spare time I'm also a fantasy illustrator 😄
Heyaaa, I've been working on this piece for a while now. It's just some chill animal handlers hangin' around and working with their chill animal friends.
A thing I've noticed from studying up on a lot of Ghibli backgrounds is a lot of them are very contour-heavy, more so than you'd think initially looking at one. They loooove to emphasize edges in whatever way they can. This BG is a bit dramatic in that sense even for them but:
Hiyaaa, this is my new personal piece, which is a take on an alchemist. It's sort of supposed to mirror the previous piece I did, which I'll post below for comparison.
Probably my last personal piece for a while, hope you like it!
It's one thing when some random 13 year old uses AI for whatever, it's another when other professional artists not only use it, but promote it in such a ridiculous sense as to claim they're changing the industry or "democratizing" art.
Nothing but shame to

Hades II early access hit over 100,000 concurrent Steam players in its first 24 hours.
That's almost 3x the all-time peak playercount of the original Hades. 😳
Castlevania is a series known for gothic castles and ruined towns, but I thought it’d be fun to have my first art drop feature some of the lovely bits of nature I painted for the season! I worked really hard to get that Ghibli-feel going with these!

It’ll still be empty because the folks pushing this stuff (like you) do not care about art, have never cared about art, and never will because you are as empty as the things you attempt to create.
Here's some small-ish tutorials on using Photoshop's Blend-If for some painting/photomanip techniques using photos as a base. This stuff was originally shown to me by Reid Southen, I recommend checking out his YT channel for more technical goodies like this.
Before I go to bed, I just want to shoutout that I finally peaked in my career because I got to draw anime food, specifically this pan full of roasted garlic. Goodnight.
There's an extremely bad ArtStation post going around right now that essentially says don't post art if you're a beginner as well as don't post WIPS.
To quote exactly from it: "if your work is trash it should not be on the internet"
I disagree.
OK, Twitter, I have a curiosity for you: reply with your job/discipline/creative medium and one highly specific & concrete piece of advice/wisdom/experience/reference that you feel might help someone like you one day. Please feel free to go super niche or specific.
This relatively new AI is literally stealing from an artist who has died within the last year (Miura). Shameless doesn't even begin to describe the people who helped enable this.
Here is a collection of relatively modern or currently working artists that they advertise as styles to steal on their site(there are hundreds of others). This is just gross.
Hey so these paintings below as well as others are part of a series I've been working on for 3-ish years. It's all about exploring everyday jobs through the lens of fantasy worlds. I have a list of jobs I havent tackled yet and was wondering if yall have anymore ideas?
Can’t believe I have to say this, but animation studios rarely have any say in the writing of the show they’re producing, so please don’t direct your story complaints at the the artists, it’s not that hard!
You know what, I think I'm gonna just make a lil' thread of my Castlevania Season 4 stuff that I can link to in the future. This doesn't have *everything*, but is like a little portfolio for twitter purposes.
So in episode 4 of Castlevania season 4, I got to mock-up these backgrounds that appear in the Infinite Corridor. They're all locations from Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin, and they were all super fun to make, especially that first one haha.
I need some help! !🙌🙌🙌
My concept art "Loki's Revenge", was stolen and presented as concept art for the notorious NFT game "Epic Hero Battles" !
@EpicHeroio
Can you explain this???
JOB ALERT: We're looking for a background artist to help with CASTLEVANIA: NOCTURNE! The job can be remote or in the studio. We need artists who can paint as well as the below images, so please keep that in mind!
Apply here or if you're a mutual, DM me:
A very small thing I've been thinking about in the aftermath of the Blizzard/Activision stuff; if you're a studio bigger than like 10 people, you should probably retire the whole "were a family" bit.
Here are some of my backgrounds for Boston in episode 1 of

! The idea from the start was that I wanted there to be a sequential change of mood throughout. We start with warm and safe, transition to threatening and oppressive, and finally sad and scared.
Man I should really get back into working on this 'fantasy job' series again, I really loved it. I need to start thinkin' on what kinda job I'd tackle next though.
Actually instead of doing every pic one by one, I'm just gonna post all of them at once to save your feed from getting more cluttered haha. I know y'all already saw the last one, but it was posted on FB today so why not?
In the likely event that Twitter is no longer around within a few months/weeks/days/hours(??), I’d like to promote my print shop (link below!)
Go there and buy pretty prints like these :)
Noah's a fucking embarrassment of an artist/human and should never be let back in. He's had many many many times to acknowledge his awfulness, and he only publicly acknowledged it when he was forced to, after a myriad of stories came out, with them spanning a decade.
Admitted rapist Noah Bradley is back on Instagram trying to pretend he did not admit to raping women. His fans are welcoming him back and this all sucks. Which law of power is this one Noah?
To all the fans of Castlevania, new and old, thank you for your patience during the last few years. Seeing the lovely reactions to our work really do motivate us to do our absolute best, and we can't wait for you all to see the whole show when it's out on September 28th.
I PRAY FOR YOU, RICHTER BELMONT. Witness the rise of our gaming icon and vampire hunter prodigy in the all-new Castlevania: Nocturne - premiering September 28, only on Netflix.
Sometime in learning how to paint, I came across artists like Marek Okon and Johannes Voß. Both artists had, and still have, their old work sitting up alongside their newer work. Even today their progress inspires me.
A fun

Happy to say that after 7 years of tryin', I'm finally gonna be doing freelance work for Magic the Gathering. 😄
Thank you all for supporting me through this journey.
Dunno who needs to hear this tonight, and I’m tweeting it apropos of nothing, but if you’re an artist struggling right now please please please don’t give up on your dreams of art. Even if you have to put them aside for now to focus on paying bills, never truly give up on them.
This is a reference I’ve been wanting to get in the show since I started working at Powerhouse 6 years ago. I very much loved watching Giant Bomb on the side while I worked, especially the Vinnyvania series.
Hey guys it's DarkLurKr39 here, with another urban explorer vid today, this time featuring some creepy castle that I never noticed through all my walks down this same road every day. That's so funny! Far as I can tell though, no one lives here.
Artists, how often did you prioritize speed when you were learning? Would you have liked to have known how much time pro artists were spending on their pieces? Do you think speed is a big deal in your industry?
I had the pleasure of being able to work on the very last scene for Castlevania season 2. I wanted to contrast the warmth of the setting with the sadness the character in this scene felt.

Hiya, here's a trio of Castlevania Season 3 paintings! These are all from the underground library of the Belmont Hold. It was fun getting these to work for the compositors so we could have the lights slowly turn on one by one.
Fun Fact: Most of the past occupants in Drac's castle weren't able to catch those beautiful daylight views. ☀️⚰️ Thankfully,
@sstarkm
was able to capture them for us. And, along with the Belmont Hold, it was "the most important place in the world" at that time.
