I cancelled a new doctor’s appointment (for myself) out of frustration. 9 pages of heteronormative forms and because they were digital, I couldn’t fix any of it. In a past life, I would have just ignored it and moved on. But no longer. We MUST do better.

Thank you
@AmJGastro
for this. Deeply humbled to share my personal and professional perspective on LGBTQI+ health. Life has not always been 🌈, but having supportive people has made all the difference. There is work to be done, but things are changing.

When I started GI fellowship (and up until 2 years ago), I thought I was the *only* 🏳️🌈 physician in gi/liver. A literal 🦄. I am so glad to be so wrong. Last night was so affirming.

I asked my patient today what pronouns they prefer to use, and they started crying because no one in healthcare had ever asked them that. Pronouns are powerful. 🌈

These sessions made my ❤️ full!
AND ...
Every time the 🚪 opened, I looked in fear that it could be someone filled with malice and vitriol.
These are learned behaviors.
Did I feel that way during a liver session? No.
This isn't politics. This is life and death.

Completely agree- one of my research questions when I first started out was about queer health and was told there is no interest in that… and I felt judged and humiliated… and I believed it… until now

Hepatology cant become a list of things we ask a PCP to do
We need to lead. Examples:
💊 for AUD
💊for weight loss / NASH
Hire nutritionists, SW
1st line depression tx
💊testosterone 4 sarcopenia
Multidisciplinary care is ideal but we have to add value, help PCPs

Thankful for Dr Adeleye’s expertise. Physician fertility and family building is important, and not talked about. This needs to be part of every undergraduate and graduate medical education curriculum. But I know there are amazing advocates in the field

I’m giving a lecture to our med students about transgender health. This is a great point. Is there any literature that you know of that I can read more about this.
