Latest POTENTIAL snowfall forecast as of Monday evening for the expected midweek winter storm, which is set to impact the area from Wednesday afternoon into Thursday morning. Snowfall of 4-8 inches currently appears to be a safe bet across the majority of our region. We are monitoring the potential for totals exceeding 8 inches across our northern zones, which will be reflected in later forecasts if needed. Across portions of Southeast Lower Michigan, a mix of sleet and freezing rain will likely reduce snow totals. 2-4 inches of snow, along with the potential for a glaze to 1/10 inch of ice, is forecast. Primarily snow yes, although a glaze of ice cannot be ruled out for the southeastern extent of the watch zone (areas like Kalamazoo/Lansing/Howell/Pontiac/etc.) Areas outside of the watch are more likely to see mixing which will cut back on the heavier snow totals, but some uncertainty remains on where exactly the mixing line will setup.

Certainly can't be ruled out, although some uncertainty exists with where the wintry mix will setup which could down on the heaviest snowfall totals. It is reasonable to believe at least a Winter Weather Advisory would end up being issued for the Metro Detroit area as we get closer.

A winter storm appears likely to bring potentially significant snowfall to much of the region from Wednesday evening through Thursday morning. Based on computer guidance consensus, snowfall totals of 6 inches or more seems like a safe bet across most of the area. A mix of sleet and freezing rain may reduce snow totals across portions of southeast Lower Michigan, though some uncertainty remains regarding the extent of that potential. We are monitoring another system that has the potential to bring impacts to the region as we head into the middle of the week. Since this is still several days away, there is time for things to change. For reference, the last couple of systems appeared more significant at this range but then backed off on intensity as we got closer. Snow continues across our northern areas (US-10 corridor into the Thumb region) after overcoming the shallow dry air layer in place this morning. Additional precipitation is lifting northeast into our southern zones from a secondary southern system. The SPC has recently highlighted the potential for freezing rain, mainly across northern IN and OH, but it does include areas of MI immediately adjacent to the state line (near/south of US-12). We don’t anticipate much more than a glaze of ice locally within that corridor. #miwx #southmiwx #weather

Snow is falling this morning, particularly in Northern Lower Michigan, and is beginning to fill in across our northern areas (north of I-96). Activity will continue to expand through the afternoon hours. South of I-96, some mixed precipitation may come into play, reducing snow totals compared to areas farther north. A glaze of ice cannot be ruled out, particularly near and south of I-94. Bay, Midland, and Huron counties were added to the Winter Weather Advisory roster this morning until midnight tonight. The overall forecast from earlier remains valid for the most part, though accumulation contours have been adjusted based on new guidance from earlier tonight. Near and south of I-94, some mixed precipitation may occur, potentially resulting in a light glaze of ice in parts of this corridor. Our next system arrives tomorrow into tomorrow night, bringing fresh snowfall to the region. The greatest accumulation potential is across our far northern areas near the US-10 corridor in West/Mid-Michigan east towards the Tri-Cities/Thumb region. 4-6" of snow looks likely in those areas, with the possibility of higher amounts not off the table. Snow totals generally decrease farther south, though we are monitoring the potential for a band of 2-4" in Southeast Lower Michigan, depending on where the low-pressure centers merge. Uncertainty among computer guidance prevents us from highlighting a specific area for that potential at this time.
