Happy holidays!
Over the past few years I have been working on machine-learning algorithms that generate synth sounds from audio samples.
Vintage Tonic is the first fruit of this labor. A recreation of ten legendary drum machines for Microtonic.
I sat down with
@CUCKOOMUSIC
for an in-depth talk about Synplant 2, unearthing its new features and demonstrating Genopatch - our AI that generates synth patches from samples.

No. We are not having a Black Friday sale this year either. Instead, we will donate 100% of what we make on to

on Friday. That way you still get to buy stuff and feel good about it, but in another way. A better way.

Nice! "Best Invention Of The Year" makes me proud. No denying that. But "something of a software god". I don't know. Should I put that on my business card? :-P Coincidentally, I just finished coding what I consider my best invention of this year. I'll show it to you next year.
As technology advances faster and faster we encounter many new innovations. In 2017 it was
@jugendingenieur
(winner) and
@WeAreROLI
(highly commended) who released the finest innovations -

In what has become our Black Friday tradition by now, we once again offer a 0% discount on . Instead, we donate 100% of our revenue to WWF to help fight climate change.
Just like last year we offer 0% discount on this black Friday. Instead we will donate 100% of our revenue to
@wwf
to help fight climate change. In 2018 we broke the record for sales in a single day. Spread the word and help us repeat the success this year!
This new Synplant 2 synth plugin, you can feed it any sound you like and it will try to recreate it using AI with some 'basic' 2osc synthesis. So naturally I fed it some 808s and put together this drum beat using the sounds it spat out.
@soniccharge
what have you done?
I am honestly a tad bit confused but plenty humbled. Another award for best innovation of the year! Thanks
@musicradar
! And thanks
@jugendingenieur
for helping me fulfill the dream of putting an infinite number of drums into people's pockets.
Haha. We have already broken this year's record for sales in a single day (with a broad margin). 0% discounts. 100% charity. 12h+ left. Love you guys. 🐼

Sort of. Genopatch will attempt to mimic sounds with the Synplant synth engine (basically a VA with two oscs + fm + multi-mode filter synth). The plant branches randomizes the patch params when you drag them (as did Synplant 1), but you can manually edit the params too.
Big thanks to everyone who bought Synplant on Black Friday and contributed to making our tree-planting campaign a big success. 🌱 Check your mail inbox for your personal

Here is a link to the

tune that I posted earlier on Instagram. The URL contains the complete song data (including the 8 synth patches). Songs can be 8 bars maximum because why would you ever need more, really? Hit me with your remixes! :D

Well, personally, I've always admired synths with few parameters and plenty of character. My goal with Genopatch was never about replicating every sound on Earth but to draw out the best of Synplant within its confines. If something is everything, it is also nothing.
Some Windows users report that Synplant virtually freezes their PCs when running Genopatch. It's unclear why this happens only on some installations, but I want to get to the bottom of it. If you are affected and want to help, please join here:
PO-35 factory content run down! These are the preloaded sounds and patterns, but you can change everything: Sound
#1
-15 by recording into mic or line-in. Sound
#16
contains an additional 16 drum sounds that can be replaced by sending patches from Microtonic (just like on
#PO32
).
@SteinbergMedia
VST was truly visionary and VST2 has served us well for almost 20 years. Thank you! I am disappointed to hear that you are abandoning VST2 when it is still perfectly adequate. VST3 is an entirely new format and too different to guarantee a smooth transition for us and our users.

Like Arthur C Clarke said: "Any sufficiently advanced dsp running on insufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic"
@Behringer
Totally not cool
@Behringer
. This is bullying. I've never had much of an opinion about your company until now, and now I despise you. What a way to build a brand.
Happy to inform that no Pocket Operators can ever be affected by

#Spectre
. (Most likely your computer won't be either as hackers need to get into your machine first. Cloud servers is where the problem is at. Sucks if we all have to suffer slowdowns from the fixes.)
Trying to squeeze out the entire ”It’s Called a Heart” by Depeche Mode on the

PO-33&35 and play it live sure was a challenge, but fun! Since it is a jam…
The CPU in the POs have no cache at all, which would make timing attacks like Meltdown/Spectre impossible. It also makes them very predictable: exactly 1024 instructions per sample they produce. Never more. Never less. </ComputerLesson>
Btw that
#js80trx
is something that I made a couple of years ago for a silly JS game engine that I'm creating with my kids. For stupid stuff like I guess you should be thankful that I am a better at designing synths than games.
