College should be about depth. I think that’s where we messed up. Weekly assignments and deadlines do not encourage depth
You know what does? Structured grokking of textbooks. Keep the same courses but have additional emphasis on absorbing textbooks

the craziest part is almost no one will ever tell you to “do better”. they’ll assume that you’re either satisfied with where you are, or just not care enough to say it. i think it’s CRITICAL to surround yourself with people who’ll force you to get better. many ways to do that.

as i get older im realizing that not all friendships are supposed to become closer/tighter over time. sometimes the stable equilibrium is to stay at a familiarity level where you serve some purpose for each other over time, but not get too close otherwise it starts to crack.

1. researcher comes up with a cool abstraction for thinking about an interesting problem
2. then uses abstraction to develop a method that is clearly unscalable and useless in practice
3. abstract is super neat and clean tho so gets a lot of citations.
