im tired of seeing people not understand/grasp what riot grrrl is, so here’s an explanation + a list of actual riot grrrl bands from someone who’s really autistic about riot grrrl! (a thread)

riot grrrl was actually more centered around the scene/movement, and just happened to be connected to music as movements often are. this means that if you weren’t present in the scene, YOU ARE NOT RIOT GRRRL.

heres a list of bands that often get mistaken for riot grrrl:
-hole
-babes in toyland
-jack off jill
-sleater-kinney
-le tigre
Etc.
a lot of these bands are inspired by/connected to riot grrrl in some way, but they are by no means actually riot grrrl.

bikini kill: this one’s pretty obvious but i feel like it’s necessary to put on the list. kathleen came up with the name riot grrrl for gods sake!!! past me loving kathleen and all her ideas this is generally just such a good band. they really spearheaded the movement.

heavens to betsy: one of my favs, this is corin tucker’s band before sleater-kinney. its only two instruments and corin’s voice. its an acquired taste (it can be harsh) but i think it’s wonderful. corin also did a wonderful job addressing the issues in the movement.

bratmobile: again, obvious, but necessary. Soooooo good, again simple and scathing. i love it so much (i saw them live) and allison wolfe is so cool!!

this is obviously a different thing from being inspired by the movement or the music, but a lot of people think just because you’re a girl band means you’re riot grrrl.
even if you’re a feminist girl band form the 90s, this does not necessarily mean you are riot grrrl.

i don’t have the space to fully explain what riot grrrl was as a movement, but i recommend reading the riot grrrl collection (it’s a book of riot grrrl zines), kathleen hanna’s memoir, and girls to the front for more info. DO NOT TRUST GOOGLE.

excuse 17: this is a smaller one- carrie brownstein’s band before sleater kinney. it is also maybe my favorite. I LOVE excuse 17 so much- lots of screaming and a very heavy PNW accent. really really good. very intense tho
