Some nice news for Monday Morning - thrilled to say I'm the new Champagne correspondent for @Decanter . We sat down last week to plan coverage in print and online for the rest of 2023. I can't wait to get stuck in and bring even more of this amazing place to light.

@GavinQuinney @timcarlisle01 @Wine_Cuentista I guess so yes. Even leasing turns you into NM in Champagne though! You're allowed to take in 5% external fruit and remain a RM (eg allows rosé production for those without red grapes). This might help (or further confuse...)

@timcarlisle01 @Wine_Cuentista @GavinQuinney And often just a simple case of expansion given it's incredibly difficult to purchase vineyards (certainly in the Côte des Blancs!). Not sure whether it has anything to do with Fleur de Miraval (which involves bought-in fruit and wine) in Peters case, or just expansion

@GavinQuinney @Wine_Cuentista Not many! Some, though, and I even visited one last year. Often exactly the same wine as the village co-op sells as own/buyers brand. Growers choose disgorgement date and dosage. Cheap, safe, technically correct, yet sold as small/family label - easy to understand their success

@GavinQuinney @Wine_Cuentista Yes 'grower' is more of a complex political constituency in Champagne than the consumer-friendly term it gets used as. Also there is likely little appetite to advertise the number of RCs! (although their wine should probably go in with the co-op stats)

@Wine_Cuentista @GavinQuinney Most RCs are much smaller than the RMs, but there are more of them - about 3:2 RCs to RMs. But the CIVC don't provide data. When you add in all the growers moving from RMs to NMs (which one could just about quantify with some sleuthing) this data doesn't really tell us much.

@PeterPharos @atkinson_mw @artisanswiss @DwightFurrow Ahead of their time in many ways - better viti, MV, low SO2 + dosage when the T shirts were in school uniform. Completely owned by Artemis now. Like the Avize, Dizy and DT

@PlanetVictoria @AnnaSpooner @BestyMike @guyawoodward @Masterofwhine @Wine_GB Digital tasting booklets are about as much use as a digital spittoon. Fun venue but I preferred it before (can we go back to zone one please!)

@artisanswiss My sink has expensive tastes, but it's not getting this one tonight (although it was licking its lips after my initial reaction). Certainly fairly extreme.
