Excellent thread that's worth your time! We also recommend following @IUCNFireflies and @silent_sparks to learn more about firefly conservation.

Where did all the fireflies glow? We hear it in our comments - hey, why don't I see that many lightning bugs anymore? The simple answer is, because there aren't as many as there used to be. But why? Before we answer that, you need to know how this beetle starts out life. 🧵

Because fireflies are toxic, lots of other insects have evolved ways to look like them!

#Fireflies as a “gateway bug” for conservation? Artists are exploring ways to boost firefly #conservation as many species decline. #LightningBugs aren’t the only #insects that could benefit. A PNAS Science and Culture piece: https://t.co/Rqe2GmQeJz #ClimateChange #SciComm #SciArt

The orchid mantis is a spectacular beauty with legs and abdomen resembling the petals of an orchid (see comments). Interestingly, we don't usually see them in proximity to any orchids.

I really enjoyed seeing @BucknellU Professor Sarah Lower (@seslower), #biology, and the students who assist her in her research on #fireflies featured in this story in @TheAtlantic.

Did you know newly dead corals can lose significant amounts of calcium carbonate? In this new study led by @FRAME5_7 published in @CommsBio @NaturePortfolio, we found losses of up to 40% one year following mortality. https://t.co/93Z8Sagi36

Morpho butterflies are amazing. This is one of my favorites, Morpho cypris. Striking metallic blue iridescence! The wings actually don’t have blue pigment, it’s made from scale structure and way the light reflects! Specimens in the #McGuireCenter at @UF@FloridaMuseum

This fish has “skin sight” that’s unlike any other animal known to use the same tactic to protect itself
