History will judge DLSS upscaling and frame generation differently.

NVIDIA are pushing a graphics future where the GPU renders at low resolution and uses AI to interpolate more detail. This is basically what we did as kids in the 80’s, the graphics were blocky but our own neurons imagined detail that wasn’t there.

@paulg @RomeInTheEast There is some push to retcon the dark ages. But the more I read about it, it did seem like an unbelievably miserable stagnant time in European history. I much preferred the renaissance and enlightenment times.

Maybe I'm crazy but why aren't people talking about the combination of RL and Genetic Programming. RL guidance could help evolutionary methods find better solutions faster. By injecting learned knowledge (from RL) into the evolutionary loop – either as initial solutions, operator choices, or selection pressure – the hybrid algorithms can navigate large search spaces (like routing, scheduling, or assignment problems) more effectively than traditional methods.

I had a discussion with a friend of mine who is a CIO of a European big company. He's worried that the United States is turning into a facist country given recent news. I was quite perplexed. Why would it be facist? How come everything is labeled as facist? I'm not a believer that history repeats itself, but what makes people so convinced that a specific form of political movement from the 1930s-40s is the only type of movement that is going to repeat. Why wouldn't it be something like Chang Kai Shek's nationalist movement, or Pol Pot's regime, or the staunch American Isolationism movement. Why must "history repeats itself" only mean "facism". What would people in Europe in 1930 compare the movements to before? French Revolution, Napoleon, Charlemagne, Aurelius? Those comparisons seem wildly leaky at best. If history does repeat itself, why wouldn't it be something as terrifying as the Great Leap Forward? That's actually more recent.

@clattner_llvm is absolutely onto something. Of all of my customers, I've seen nothing but sadness when they tell me how Python really can't seem to support production or high performance use cases.

@0xIlyy Rust is a very OCD language. It’s extremely intolerant of talking to CFFI such that you have to wrap everything in “unsafe”. I can totally understand why every single rest developer wants to rewrite every library or kernel.

@EMostaque It is very possible that we are in the punchcard era of AI. Punchcards used to be the I/O and memory of computers but then new mediums accelerated innovation to unprecedented levels

@mrsiipa I believe OpenAI has captured the minds of middle schoolers to young adults right now. That in and of itself is a wave we don’t see coming. I don’t see college kids in cafes using Gemini

@paulg I cannot think of an analogy for AI just as I have no way to find an analogy for Satellites, Penicillin, Sonographs. I think AI is just different. But it’s understandable to the masses thanks to decades of sci-fi books and movies.
