Why don’t we use solid boron powder (or any metal powder) as a way to store and transport energy? Burning (oxidizing) a liter of boron releases 40kWh of heat at over 2000 C. That’s 4x the energy density of diesel.

@browserdotsys The book wasn’t bad, but its high concept and has long setups for its payoffs. I think it’s the best sci-fi after the classics. Did you read just the first book or did you finish all three?

@paulg When paired with the saying “one can do a great deal of good in this world if one does not care who gets the credit for it” we can basically conclude that it’s best for the benefactor and the beneficiary to be blissfully unaware of each other.

@krishnanrohit There was recently a video of Kevin Scott, CTO of MSFT, telling Reid Hoffman in a podcast or something that if gpt-4 is at high school level then the next gen of OpenAI’s models can pass PhD qualifying exams. Idk how to square this with that. TBH this feels like strategic comms.

@browserdotsys the first is mostly just an elaborate setup and the second and third books are where the payoffs really happen. so i'd still recommend the rest of the series even though it can get a bit ponderous at times.

@iamgingertrash ime this is an elite problem. there's a deep inferiority complex and a craving for external validation that's part of our elite culture that really stifles and crowds out original thinking. but i'd say that's changing fast.

@VividVoid_ I think all special abilities come down to signal processing. Most people learn to abstract away “noise” that cannot be plugged into a mental model that society values. But if you stare at noise for long enough you start to see information. Or hallucinations.

This is brilliant. Assuming intelligence is something that can compound, there's a time value of intelligence and an opportunity cost to any given application of intelligence. Optimal investment of intelligence will likely not be in replacing all human labor.

apparently we have known since 1922 that niobium oxide glows 85000x brighter than a blackbody at 560C. that's an absurdly high thermal luminescence of 1.5 megawatts per square inch! can we pair this with a PV cell to convert heat to electric power without moving parts?
