'crack down on university degrees' is quite a phrase in itself, isn't it. Not 'crack down on violent crime' or 'crack down on huge companies not paying tax' but... crack down on ordinary people learning stuff. I mean how dare they.
o my fucking sainted aunt, I am already seeing men complaining that new She-Ra isn't fucking 'sexy' enough or some shit.
Listen
up
twats.
This
is not
for you.
o god there's a lot of that 'fantasy books should be historically accurate' i.e. no one who isn't white mkay
fuuuck OFFFF
FIRSTLY
YOU DON'T KNOW HISTORY MATE
+
say it with me 🧙♀️FANTASY BOOKS DO NOT NEED TO BE 'HISTORICALLY ACCURATE' BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT HISTORY🧙♀️
it's always been very simple - the Tories don't want working class people to get good educations, because once we do, we realise just how much they want to grind us into the mud
this goes doubly for the arts and humanities of course, because art teaches us to dream, and studying humanities give us a sense of our place in the world, in our history
2 years ago today this first batch of feral little balls of fluff were found in our backyard and it’s not hyperbole to say our lives changed a lot as a result. At the time we had no idea how many more would eventually show up
WARNING: THREAD OF KITTEN PHOTOSHOOT
every time I see someone complain about 'foul language' in books I add more fucks to my book. This is the thing I will literally give fucks about, it seems.
When filming the og STAR WARS trilogy, Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) would really speak to Harrison Ford in the scenes - so when Solo is reacting, he's reacting to actual dialogue and not just wookie sounds. This is *hilarious* I'm gonna need an entirely new Special Edition.
Female writer laments the lack of good female characters in fantasy books by men. Men rock up to explain how great they are at writing women actually and to recommend their own dudely books. Shocked, I am shocked.
it appears it needs saying again: aspiring writers from working class backgrounds, you do *not* need any sort of creative writing qualification to write books and be published. I'm sure they're nice! But they are not a requirement - only a good book is.
That British-Irish dialect quiz is a joy, leading me to sit at the desk by myself happily saying things like 'Bap!' and 'Berk!' and 'Wankered!' out loud (it thinks I am very south-east England, which is entirely correct)
Okay so supposedly there is a Labyrinth sequel happening, which I know nothing about, but obviously I have strong opinions on and the main one is: the whole team need to be women or gays for whom Labyrinth was a Serious Moment. No one wants or needs a straight mans idea of Jareth
I think the main thing I took away from the Terry Gilliam interview (aside from the obvious) is a terrible feeling of familiarity. I suspect every woman has had to endure a conversation with a man who is being deliberately shitty and grinning with amusement throughout.
When I see people complaining about wimminz writers putting too much 'emotion and romance' into fantasy novels my weary mind returns to the fact that the vast majority of bloody political strife in Westeros was basically caused by someone falling in love with the wrong person
it looks like a lot of this fresh nonsense is coming from the casting of The Witcher series. If you want to be racist, or sexist, or homophobic, don't bother hiding it behind 'history'
History is in a whole other room, drinking tea, & is not interested in your shite
The best possible news for us today. Currently drinking prosecco and considering a nap. 💕💕💕
It's been a rough fucking year, so huge love & thanks to all the family & friends (and NHS staff) who have kept us going.
Back in the 1st draft of a fantasy book, so time to remember 2 of my personal writing rules:
- whatever the baseline idea, make it at least 30% weirder
- take all your male characters (including background guards, wizards, shopkeepers etc), and make at least 50% of them not men
I'm sorry Europe, I'm sorry - please know that so many of us hate this, that loads of us recognise what an appallingly stupid waste this is. We'll be back one day, if you'll have us 💕
this week I have been filled with the urge to write a standalone fantasy book about a girl mage who lives with monsters because people are all terrible. I'm sure that has nothing to do with current events or anything.
so my auntie has tested positive for Covid and my mum, who is in a support bubble with her, is now awaiting her test results too 😑 If you can spare good thoughts in the direction of south east London, that would be great.
I HAVE NEWS!! So excited to be working with
@TitanBooks
&
@Bolindaaudio
to bring a new fantasy series to life 🤩🤩🤩 Huge thanks as ever to the incredible
@mushenska
for making all things possible 💕💕💕 Talonsister is on her way...

I'm a bookseller AND a writer, so I feel I have a unique level of wisdom when it comes to this... Writers, please do not ever phone a bookshop to shout at them for not stocking your book. I promise this will not work the way you think it will.
One of the most underrated bonuses of being a child (not that you would have appreciated it at the time) is that someone else has to figure out what to have for dinner every bloody day.
if you've ever hesitated about telling an author you love their book, or more specifically, talking to an author about a character of theirs you love, please do take the plunge. It always means so much and genuinely helps to keep us writing at all.
MY HEART! Thank you so much 😭😭😭I am so gutted not to be there with you all but what a tremendous honour - and such a brilliant year for nominees and winners ❤️❤️❤️
I dunno, I just think that if I had a zillion quid I would spend every day being thrilled that I don't have to worry about money anymore, & wouldn't for example be on social media burbling shite about a marginalised group because I can't let it go for some fucking reason
In celebration of my birthday, I'm giving away a special signed ARC of
#DogRoseDirt
🥀🥀🥀 There won't be many signed proofs in the world so this will be fairly unique! All you have to do is follow me & retweet this tweet, & I'll pick a random winner on Monday (uk only)
#giveaway
I see that Trump has been chatting shit about my city again. Eat my entire ass, you utter waste of skin. Literally scoop up any London rat and it talks more sense than you. Literally any discarded box of KFC bones is more attractive and smells better. You fucking melt.
genuinely one of my favourite things on twitter is when The Sun asks someone if they can use their images, and they tell the dreadful piss rag to fuck off 😁
every time I see a confident writer do one of those face-to-camera videos I feel slightly mournful that writing isn't the 'be a weird goblin & hide from everyone' career it used to be
starting with the best, really:
@DreamWorksSheRa
was fresh, funny, heartfelt and crammed with characters you loved instantly. Plus it's inclusive and funny. Shout out to the dude who thought calling me a 'new She-Ra fanatic' was an insult. Lol my dude. lol.
the idea that you, as the consumer of a story, get to change it if you don't like it is such a peculiar notion. You can hate it, complain about it, or never consume those stories again, but you don't get to *change* it. That's not how this works.
oh lord, there's another of those blatant attention seeking 'here's how you keep a man' tweets from a professional sexist doing the rounds.
For the love of all that is reasonable, DON'T RETWEET THIS SHIT, even with a pithy put down. RETWEETS ARE WHAT THEY WANT MOST.
So excited this news has popped up! My next book is a twisty serial killer thriller💀💀💀Very excited to be working with the Great and Wise
@NatashaBardon
& HUGEST thanks & love as ever to my unfeasibly brilliant agent
@mushenska
❤️❤️❤️
I love RPGs but I wish you didn't have to choose just 2 companions to tag along on missions. I want all of them to come with me, like a group of overly enthusiastic weirdos at my back all the time shouting things like 'yeah fuck em up!' & 'you can take him!' & causing trouble
the award-winning Winnowing Flame trilogy is complete! And now I have this sexy image of all the covers together 😍 Pick up The Ninth Rain to start finding out the stories behind the three warbeasts on the covers (Sharrik, Vostok & Kirune, respectively) 🦇
I am going through a Difficult Time but I also have a new book out next month that I worked my arse off on, & so I refuse to sink into a pit just yet.
Talonsister has found family, evil empires, griffins, & lashings of British folklore seen through my own weird filter
An update for you all:
@DougStrider
had his surgery yesterday, which seems to have gone well, and he's now enjoying the benefits of a morphine drip. Happy vibes and good thoughts our way would be very much appreciated ✨
Tell Jennifer Williams, whoever that is, to read BOTH transcripts of the presidential calls, & see the just released ststement from Ukraine. Then she should meet with the other Never Trumpers, who I don’t know & mostly never even heard of, & work out a better presidential attack!
we are accidentally watching Into the Spiderverse again (we own it but it turns out it's on netflix now...) so this is your reminder that it is an entirely perfect film.
Please tell me what is, for you, an entirely perfect film ?
‘Reminiscent of Silence of the Lambs & Sharp Objects, this chilling British serial killer thriller had me gripped... an ending that you won’t see coming’ -

ICYMI earlier... my debut thriller, DOG ROSE DIRT, has found a home with HarperFiction! If you enjoy scary things/serial killers/folk horror/women who take no shit, it could be your cup of murdery tea. I am *very* excited to share it with you all.
Gentle reminder - this is a public space where we all chat to lots of different people all the time. I chat to lots of mates on here, but not everyone I chat to is a mate. Vaguely neggy 'humorous' comments from, essentially, strangers, are not going to be appreciated.
I don't crawl up many hills to die on these days (my knees, my knees) but support for the use of AI in writing fiction will be an automatic ban-hammer for me. If you can't see the problems with it I've got nothing for you.
it doesn't seem to be officially announced yet but (as the news seems to be everywhere) I am dead chuffed that The Ninth Rain has been nominated for Best Fantasy Novel in the BFS awards. It's a book I'm very proud of & this means so much ❤️❤️❤️
🤩 There are no words for how excited I am about this... The team at
@GaumontTV
have produced some amazing things and a potential adaptation of Dog Rose Dirt couldn't be in better hands. Huge thanks as ever to
@mushenska
&
@EmilyHaywardW
for being superstars ❤️
My finished copies of Dog Rose Dirt are here! 💕💖💕 They are very beautiful 😍 My seventh published novel and my first UK hardback!! Feeling quite proud.

If I'm tweeting about something I love, with enthusiasm, please don't reply with 'well I hated it because...' because I promise I don't care & I have no idea how to respond to these tweets.
presenting THE POISON SONG, the final volume in the Winnowing Flame trilogy. ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Enormous thanks to
@PatrickInsole
& the amazing team at
@headlinepg
for creating this gorgeous and unusual cover. The book itself will be here in May, & you can preorder from the usual places
I know from personal experience that writing as a career can seem like an impossible dream if you are from a low income/working class background. The one time I discussed it with an adult, they told me 'well, it's a nice hobby' & that was that –
saw one of those lifestyle posts on instagram that are like 'try arranging your books by colour to make your shelves pop!!' and I'm like, listen mate, I am at book capacity here, there are books in piles, I haven't seen an empty bookshelf in decades, I AM MORE BOOK THAN WOMAN NOW
have been having what I suppose could be called a 'poor mental health day', but have just about managed to get myself through today's writing commitments. Giving myself a small round of applause.
A bloke just picked The Ninth Rain off the shelf and bought it after browsing the fantasy section. I didn't tell him I wrote it (I have to be feeling super confident) but he might have been perplexed by the unusually enthused 'I HOPE YOU ENJOY IT!!'
I have a challenge for you this morning, Book Twitter. I want to populate a list called The 20 Essential Science-Fiction Novels of the Last 20 years.
What do you nominate?
Pls pls god don't pearl clutch at me with 'but what if his replacement is worse' a) let us enjoy this moment, jesus christ, and b) if you don't see why it's important we get rid of Trump's queasy little twin I can't help you
the real problem with a remake of The Princess Bride is that if anyone other than Peter Falk should ever play the granddad character, I will have to rise up and attain my ultimate form, crumbling this puny world into dust and consuming the sun. I don't make the rules.
@glenatron
I've always thought that the secret slippery underbelly of Britishness is the attitude of 'I'm alright Jack so fuck you' - this is that writ large
