Also worth noting: @councilofdc passed legislation that eliminates all School Resource Officers (SROs) by 2025.

I did not see our at large council members. Am I missing something? Where was the mayor? I understand one councilmember called this meeting. But the community, family, students “were there. This was a chance to listen. I am disappointed, but not surprised, in elected “leaders”

The way we talk about crime enables vigilantism. We see it in its soft form from the press with “homeowner” references to ascribe moral superiority to someone who murdered a 13 year old. We see it expressly from others.

A meeting Tuesday night drew more than 300 angry citizens, packing a community center adjacent to Brookland Middle School, which the teen, Karon Blake, attended. “I didn't know you could just kill somebody over property damage," his grandfather said.

In the spirit of transparency and accountability, today, I formally requested access to officer body camera footage in the Blake case. I will continue standing with the Blake family and Ward 5 community. I will continue showing up — even during difficult times and conversations.
