This past Friday we laid Dawud to rest and in the past few days I put words to paper to talk about who he was.
A magnificent human, an expert community builder, a mentor to so many of us. I’ll do my best to carry his lessons forward.
The U Penn student encampment against the genocide in Gaza has a nice spirit of hospitality.
When I was there people came up and gave me a water and others offered pretzels.
Go show your solidarity, you will be met with warmth.
Pretty shameful moment for Penn, Philly and honestly our country overall.
But grateful that it shows us just how threatening young people standing against war and genocide are to pro-war politicians, university administrators and elites.
You inspire us. Keep going.
Unsure what to be more upset about: The slaughter of 15,000+ Gazans or the peaceful -but perhaps clumsy- protest of a restauranteur who tacitly supports a regime that has murdered thousands.
Counterpoint: Corporate America may be a more strategic target.
Pretty cool that approximately 25% of Philly police can log into our city’s surveillance camera system at any time to control and monitor the cameras through a smart phone app.
Cannot see any abuse of power happening there.
Weekend Roundup:
Rebecca Rhynhart’s rally: ~40 people
Cherelle Parker’s rally: ~100 people
@HelenGymPHL
rally: 1000+ people
Join us to win a city that puts everyday people first.
If you’ve been pro-Rebecca, but are worried about Cherelle now would be a good time to switch to Helen.
Rebecca’s endorsements are *very* thin on organizations that will actually help get out the vote which will be critical on Tuesday.
Unite with us against business as usual!
@mindyisser
The fauxpology was cringe but the outrage over character letters is bad. In an era where victim impact testimony (which was rarely allowed in court before the 90s) can really enhance punishment, character letters and mitigation are important in humanizing defendants.
Real ones 4 real ones.
Love to see
@RepRabb
standing up for our free speech rights and love to see
@JVPPhilly
demanding that our state treasury funds be invested in our communities not the war crimes of the state of Israel.
Rebecca Rhynhart talking about how there are no consequences in our city is just rubbish. Go down to the CJC Monday through Friday and you’ll see judges meting out consequences.
What people don’t have right now is hope.
Our movement family’s new billboards just dropped⚡️In this fight for the future we will knock more doors and use every avenue available to win big for our city.
➡️ Underfunded communities make us less safe. On May 16th vote Helen Gym to turn things around.
Well while we’re on the subject of opinions Commonwealth Foundation should focus more on abolishing itself and
@PhillyInquirer
should focus less on running Commonwealth op-eds.
What’s going on
@richard_g_jones
? Are y’all getting funded to run all these op-eds? Some Ya$$ perhaps?
Remember four years ago in the primary when
@HelenGymPHL
beat Allan Domb by so much that you almost could’ve fit another successful candidate in the difference?
Some of the chattering classes seem to forget how popular Helen is, but we will be reminding them on May 16th 😁
@MattHunterMCR
probably because he’s trying to be relevant in imagining a political vehicle that could cohere different sectors in struggle to change conditions in the society he inhabits
Who could have predicted that responding to the public health crisis of addiction with cops and threats of jail and forced treatment would have just pushed the problem around?
Honestly we couldn’t have picked a better person to officiate our wedding.
Immensely proud of our courageous friend Jess who just disrupted the president to call for CEASEFIRE NOW!
Breaking: Rabbi Jessica Rosenberg is interrupting President Biden demanding a CEASEFIRE NOW. She is speaking on behalf of thousands of American Jews who say Not In Our Name! We refuse to allow a genocide be carried out in our names.
Ceasefire Now to save lives!
Beautiful vibes at the
@JVPPhilly
and
@rodfeishalom
Passover seder that took place at the Gaza solidarity encampment on U Penn campus.
Carve out some time to swing by and show your support for this vital movement in an important moment. It will be appreciated!
Me and
@aklagsbrun
just updated our wedding website because a great gift our guests can give us is solidarity with
@PMA_Union
workers demanding dignity and respect.
Time for
@philamuseum
to stop sucking big time and bargain in good faith!
A suburban Republican mega donor is bankrolling the attack ads targeting Helen Gym.
If you are a person with progressive values who is deciding between Helen Gym and Rhynhart now is the time to stand with Helen and all those fighting for Philly schools and neighborhoods.
Don’t worry Philly twitter we’ve got you covered - we went to the Philly restaurant in Tokyo for Xmas.
They bake their own rolls in house 🤯 and the steak is great.
@WillEvans215
lmao this man won a senate race despite having a major stroke and enduring a deluge of well funded attack ads on his record of letting reformed people convicted of homicide out of prison during a crime spike. you aren’t even remotely right about his popularity.
The election is a binary choice. I believe we stand a better chance to pressure a Harris administration to demand an immediate ceasefire in Gaza than we do under a far right Trump administration.
Of course we must still fight, but which terrain do we prefer to fight on?
Love that real estate developer shill Philly twitter are all suddenly public health experts charting how some extra HIV and Hep C cases are TOTALLY worth it if in turn we can wag our fingers at people in addiction 📉📈📊
I ask you…is there anything these men cannot grasp?
Still recovering from the cuts of the Nutter years but we getting there.
Vote
@HelenGymPHL
to move the process along and get our communities what they truly deserve.
@materialist_jew
A lot of us in Pennsylvania who did support him in the general knew how much of a mixed bag he was and the left writ large didn’t support him in the primary. And this comes from someone whose movement sector won a number of big victories under his tenure at the Board of Pardons.
We have been working towards this day for the last 7 years and he fought it for 25 - his whole adult life. Please join
@AmistadLaw
in welcoming our dear friend and client Clinton Walker home.
This day could never come soon enough, but happy its finally here ✊🏿✊🏽✊🏻
A complex psy-op to get the people in the Gym and Rhynhart camps to stop fighting for a moment by giving them all the finger?
Just a horrifically embarrassing ego driven take?
Details at 11.
I love
@PhillyDSA
but wasn’t expecting them to make the BEST political ad of the season but really hats off to them.
Also thank you Bob Brady for your astute analysis in this video!
A horrific and dumb plan. Every kid held in this place will know they are being held far away from home in the shadow of a maximum security state prison.
It will shape their mental environment and then their trajectory in life.
Frankly, those of us in Philadelphia are insulted at how this impeachment has been proposed. We know there's a violence problem in Philadelphia, but it's a problem everywhere. Let Philadelphians handle Philadelphia politics.
“Despite 25 years of fiscal sanity before Kenney was elected...“
How the Inquirer Editorial Board describes an era of extreme austerity and disinvestment in Philly neighborhoods and schools that has directly contributed to our current gun violence crisis.
Powerful action by
@JVPPhilly
earlier today outside the Israel bonds office.
With thousands of children and other innocents slaughtered, it’s on all of us to call for our government and our society to divest from Israel’s genocidal military campaign in Gaza.
While Biden teams up with billionaire donors and the extreme Republican right to punch down at college kids who are demanding an end to the slaughter in Gaza you better believe this is what time it is…

And to be quite clear I think protesting people like Solomonov is a distraction at best and misguided and worst.
But context is 🔑 : people are being murdered in Gaza and none of the protesters were calling for harm to Jewish people; in fact many of those protesting were Jewish.
Even more concerning than Rhynhart’s support of a 2 PM youth curfew at a mall is her desire that police be able to ‘arrest for disorderly conduct.’
Disorderly was decriminalized years ago and results in a ticket, but she wants to take us backwards.
When this guy runs for office remember that he blocked with Republicans in an attempt to subvert the will of Philly voters.
Also remember that he tried to cynically pin a historic crime wave occurring in Philly and across the US on criminal justice reform.
Keep notes.
If you’re a victim of the

common sense HB 1410 which would allow people to be recommended for commutation if a majority of the Board agrees.
The victim was an empty police car? Or the victim was the innumerable masses of people who have suffered the indignity of racist police violence?
A horrible injustice to Ant Smith -a truly good person- that serves only to punish those who put a voice to their anger.
A former Philadelphia teacher and social justice advocate who flipped a police car during the 2020 racial justice protests was sentenced Tuesday to one year and a day in federal prison.
It’s true the ultra left can be frustrating and protest militants can sometimes be excessive and miss the mark.
But when the other side is trying to sweep 30,000+ dead bodies under the rug you better get clear about whose side you are on and what is at stake for humanity.
Tomorrow my friend Dawud goes before the Board of Pardons.
If he get approved to come home it’ll be because he has spent years building a big, beautiful community that has stood by him as he fights for his freedom.
He’s one of the most truly good and smartest people I know.
Rest in power Ezra Bozeman. A true inspiration who fought relentlessly for his freedom until the end and ultimately prevailed.
I will remember the love and care you showed to so many and the dignity you displayed facing the greatest adversity.
I spent most of my teen years forced into youth placements. Some were run by caring people and some by bad people who hurt kids powerless to stop them.
Grateful for
@HelenGymPHL
work to create this office and the necessary accountability it will bring.
Saved The Schuylkill once again. You are welcome to cross the bridge to drink our water and visit our very good Ethiopian restaurants. My condolences to all the haters who won’t cross the bridge.

Extremely proud to be a part of the progressive movement in Philly and what it’s accomplished. And committed to keep building it in the years to come. The challenges and social crises headed our way demand nothing less.
In the warm words of a movement ancestor: straight ahead!
Hope is a discipline.
We are deeply grateful to be part of a growing and vibrant people's movement in Philly that has made massive strides. While we fell short of electing
@HelenGymPHL
mayor we are grateful for the gains that we've made over the last decade.
Would have been happy to say ‘Philadelphia City Council supports a ceasefire’ even if I didn’t agree with every word in the statement that followed. It would have useful political positioning as we fight for greater influence.
Sometimes the perfect can be the enemy of the good.
I had jury duty today but then I didn’t because the world’s computers crashed.
But at least I still get that sweet $9 check so coffee is on me next time.
LISTEN: the days that Pennsylvania Dems will take money from right wing billionaire Jeff Yass are numbered.
Touch that money and it will only bring you trouble.
While being relentlessly attacked as ‘soft on crime’ for how he chaired the Board of Pardons
@JohnFetterman
ran an ad that featured him with two people he helped bring home from prison.
There’s no better test of principle in politics than the hard one.
.
@Penn
says that the demands of student protesters are unreasonable but changes tune everyday on their posture to the Gaza solidarity encampment and refuses to take calls from
@CouncilmemberJG
whose district encompasses the University.
Pretty clear who is being unreasonable.
For all those criticizing white progressives for being out of touch I’m happy to say there are some great opportunities to support Black progressive leadership ousting Republicans in city government this fall.
The same people who tried to shush us about the Gaza genocide are now gaslighting us about Biden’s mental decline and his ability to win.
Those clinging to the status quo -whether it be for their career or some limited political power- are delivering us to the mouth of fascism.
I am very biased but

The Republican effort to wedge the Democratic party ahead of the general election through an impeachment circus targeting
@DA_LarryKrasner
seems to be working.
Its with this in mind that its very concerning that
@AustinDavisPA
voted to hold our elected DA in contempt yesterday.
It just happens -in the small universe of Philly- this this is my mail carrier’s daughter.
Grateful for
@DA_LarryKrasner
and all who fought to bring about this precious freedom.
You don’t see the comparison because your a right wing shill who doesn’t like to do research.
But garbage collectors are one of the top 10 most dangerous jobs in America and cops don’t event make the top 20.
Chart is a random comparison. The risk of bodily injury and death makes that a norm that police would have higher salaries than some other employees. Crime is up across several other categories even though homicides are done, so I don’t see the argument
Gutted at the loss of one of the most tremendous people I have ever met in my life. Mentor, friend, restorative justice practitioner, expert community builder, writer and more. Few have your warmth or your generosity of spirit and I’ll miss you man.
Rest in Power Dawud.
Powerful leadership that will save lives by providing appropriate, evidence based interventions for people in crisis instead of throwing them in the back of a squad car or harming them through brute force.
Treatment not trauma.

My comrade and dear friend
@kristhemself
hits on the central problem of field in the election.
You can knock a half million + doors, but if you haven’t reached people who are political tastemakers/leaders in their neighborhood you are just swimming upstream.
@mr_saltz
I think this is the right question. We can't overcome in a conversation on a door the relationships and conversations people are having everyday with ppl they have known for years. We gotta go deeper
Have been working on this project for the last year and half with some exceptionally talented filmmakers and my ride or dies

We have been working on a documentary that we’re thrilled to finally share with you in June! No Way Home is a powerful film about one mother’s struggle to reunite her family and the movement to end Death By Incarceration in Pennsylvania.
If you can’t reckon with the fact that it’s a total atrocity to create an open air prison of millions and also horrific to gun down random people at a rave I’m not quite sure what to say.
And of course we can also know which one led to the other and that Palestine must be free.
Thinking of friends today who will be at increased risk of

Back on the doors in my neighborhood for Helen Gym.
No rest while we can win:
✅ a real plan to fix our schools
✅ youth jobs programs
✅ mobile crisis teams to respond to people in crisis with care

Leaving it all on the field to elect Helen Gym and win a city that invests in communities and everyday people.
The Board of Pardons is a Kafkaesque nightmare broken by design.
Imagine having the full support of the Department of Corrections and your district attorney but still two random Republicans appointed by two successive Democratic administrations condemn you to die in prison.
This is absolutely repugnant and anti-semitic.
As a lifelong leftist and someone who first got involved in Palestinian solidarity work over 20 years ago I have only one thing to say: CUT IT THE FUCK OUT.
A Jewish childcare program in center city Philadelphia was vandalized with a “Free Palestine” graffiti.
Free Palestine is not an antisemitic and isn’t offensive.
Graffitiing it on a building *only* because Jewish kids go there is absolutely antisemitic.
Parker, Domb, Jeff Brown etc agree.
If you hated the old stop and frisk don’t worry you’ll love the new and improved stop and frisk.
Seriously cannot make the stuff up that comes out of these candidates’ mouths
And that’s why we need to elect leaders that can inspire people and give them hope. Not someone who served as budget director carrying water for her former boss while he shuttered nearly two dozen public schools.
