The year’s most anticipated release is here - and it’s a double one! Our beautiful twin boys, Ronnie James Hannam & Roddy Roy Hannam, were born on Monday morning.
Things will never be the same again! We’ve gone from being a duo to a four-piece - it’s going to get a lot noisier!
They say ‘’if you don’t ask, you don’t get,’’ so I asked one of my favourite singer-songwriters / artists,
@marklanegan
, if I could interview him for my blog. He only went and said ‘’yes.’’ :

Ever since I discovered the music of Nick Drake, back in 1991, I’ve wanted to visit the village he grew up in and lived in for part of his short life:he died here, in Tanworth-in-Arden, on Nov 25, 1974, aged 26, and is buried in the churchyard. Today, I made a pilgrimage. 🍂 🍁
Today is a good day.I won a competition and, in other news, my cancer /urology specialist just contacted me to tell me the tumour which was removed from my bladder in July is benign. No more treatment needed - just regular check-ups.Onwards and upwards.I might have a beer later.
Massive thanks to
@vinyltaprecords
for hand-delivering my David Bowie competition prize to my house - on my birthday! Luckily we were at home, but I know when to go out and know when to stay in.
After interviewing
@michaelheadtreb
yesterday, this afternoon I played Shack’s HMS Fable - for the first time in years - while walking around Soho: it’s one of the best albums of the ‘90s, isn’t it? Those songs, those arrangements… Wonderful. A classic album.
Today is Nick Drake’s 75th birthday - sadly the English singer-songwriter died on November 25, 1974, aged only 26. His music changed my life. Today, I’m reading the excellent new biog on him and listening to his beautiful, often sad and always astonishing songs.
#nickdrake
Terrible news to wake up to. My favourite bass player of all time, Andy Rourke, has died.
‘I wear black on the outside, ‘cause black is how I feel on the inside.’ 😢
It is with great sadness that I must let you know that my dad
@johnhannammeets
has died after a short illness.He was a well-known and well-loved showbiz journalist & broadcaster on the Isle of Wight for almost 50 years.There will be news on how his life will be celebrated soon.X
Breaking news. Just joined Erasure - they’ve decided they want to appeal to the middle-aged, indie-hipster dad market, who currently have a little respect for them…
Thanks to everyone who sent me messages ahead of my op,which went well.I had a tiny recurrence of a tumour on my bladder, but it’s been removed - I’m fine:a minor blip on my road to recovery,since I was diagnosed with low-grade bladder cancer 4 years ago.Onwards & upwards.👍xxx
Really sad to hear Steve Harley has died. I interviewed him for
@hifiplusmag
in 2022, to talk about his 50 years in showbiz. He was a lovely guy: we really hit it off and I enjoyed chatting to him about gigging, writing and recording: 😔
I spoke to one of my favourite artists,
@RichardHawley
,about his brilliant new
@AceRecordsLtd
compilation - '28 Little Bangers From Richard Hawley's Jukebox’ - out today. We talked about collecting and playing vinyl, and his love of the seven-inch single:
I first saw Oasis in TJs - a small club in Newport, South Wales - May 1994: shortly after Supersonic came out. It was a great gig - me and my mates ended up backstage and then at the after-show in their hotel. I was 20 - and at university. Fun times.
#Oasis
Always such a pleasure to talk to the lovely and erudite Stephen Duffy. This time around he tells me all about the wonderful new
@TheLilacTime
album - (out this Friday), which he thinks is his best record, and recounts a recent bizarre gardening accident:
Happy 82nd birthday to Bob Dylan - to celebrate, I’m hosting an event at Chesham Library, Bucks, tomorrow night, in association with Chapter Two bookshop. There will be an interview session with
@barberville
and music by Paul King of
@KyndThe
.Tickets:
Hey: a few family members, friends and colleagues knew I’d had another cancer scare, but I hadn’t shared anything on social media.
So, here goes...don’t worry: it’s good news! I'm pleased to say that today I got the results of my MRI scan and I’m all clear.Phew! 😎

Listening to West End Girls by
@petshopboys
- a record that changed my life in 1985:I was 11. Me and my dad saw it on Top of the Pops and we both loved it: it was so different to anything else I’d heard / seen. It got me into ‘alternative’ music - my 'seeing Bowie' on TV moment.
New job klaxon!After 19 years,I’ve left ERT to go freelance - hit me up if you want articles on tech / electricals; music/ audio; films; smart home & appliances.I’m also available for hosting / moderating events & chairing panels. DM me for contact details.Onwards and upwards. X
Pleased to announce that I’m now officially one of the album reviewers for
@americanaUK
. It’s really great to be on board. I think this shirt & baby grow combi got me the gig...
I’m having a fab Friday... My wife’s folks are having a clear out at home - we’ve just inherited these. The copy of With The Beatles is signed to her dad, from George Martin.
Dad’s funeral is a week today, on the Isle of Wight. Everything is pretty much sorted for the church service and the wake - we’re going to give him a great send-off. We’ll be celebrating his legacy and his wonderful life.
Last week, I had the pleasure of meeting Paul Weller:we had a brief chat outside a coffee shop in London.
Sadly, I didn’t get a chance to tell him that I’d reviewed his latest album, 66, for the June issue of
@hifiplusmag
:I think it’s his best record since 2018’s True Meanings.
A flexible cystoscopy isn’t the most relaxing way to spend a Saturday, but when you get the news that you’re still cancer-free, five years on from being diagnosed, it’s worth all the wincing… It’s made my hole weak. 🙂 👍
I am heartbroken:Duane Eddy has died: one of my musical heroes, and my dad’s guitar hero. 😔 When he played the London Palladium for his 80th birthday, six years ago, dad and I went - it was one of the best nights of our lives. We met Duane, and he was wonderful. 🎸💥
#duaneeddy
What a wonderful and life-affirming night with
@michaelheadtreb
at
@EartHackney
- one of our greatest, yet underrated, singer-songwriters. If you know, you know… And we got a superb version of Love’s A House Is Not A Motel as an encore. Totally cosmic, man.❤️
If anyone wants me to do a TV interview during lockdown, let me know ASAP, so I can choose which shelves to sit in front of... I have options...
#ShowUsYourShelves
Today is dad’s birthday. I’m going to spend some time reflecting and doing some things I enjoy, like listening to some music from his record collection. ❤️
Spent yesterday sorting out some of my late dad’s possessions in a storage unit. I carried all of this vinyl - and more - back on the train and the Tube. I’ll definitely be enjoying a folky autumn / winter soundtrack. Now playing one of my favourites…

Today, I sold all my childhood Star Wars figures - and a Jabba the Hutt play set - for quite a lot of money. Some of them have been in the loft of my parents’ house for almost 40 years.
#cashintheattic
Out knocking up for Polling Day in Chesham & Amersham and just spoke to a lovely couple who are voting Lib Dem for
@SarahGreenLD
for the first time - “we are really impressed with the campaign you’ve run, and we want the Tories out,” they told me. Vibe is incredible here.
I’m used to seeing my dad’s name in newspapers, but, sadly, this time around it’s for very different reasons - huge thanks to the
@iwcponline
for their brilliant tribute and support. X
#johnhannam
The brilliant new
@TheLilacTime
album is out today - I talked to Stephen Duffy
about writing and recording it, global warming, Tory cruelty, protest songs and the dangers of gardening:
Today is the 44th anniversary of the death of the wonderful actor Stanley Baker. I have fond memories of recording this special
@TalkingPicsTV
show about his life and career, with his son Glyn. It was first shown a year ago and has been repeated since.We had some great feedback.
Done the double - unfortunately I’ve had to listen to Mumford & Sons playing on the speaker in the waiting room. I’d assumed it would be the Pfizer Chiefs.
Young couple who lived next door to us were due to be married, but have now called it off and broken up. She’s moved out.They gave us some of the wine meant for the wedding reception. I feel slightly sad drinking it. I might write a Gram Parsons-style country song about it.
‘The Fall’s contract to appear on Later … with Jools Holland included a clause stipulating that under no circumstances was Holland to play “boogie-woogie piano anywhere near the Fall”). ‘
Last month was my most successful as a freelancer - in fact, it was my most successful month since I started a full-time career in 1998! I went freelance in late 2018. Cheers!
#freelancelife
If that was my last gig for a while, I’ll take it: a brilliant
@officialmoz
show. One for the diehard fans. Great to see some old, dear friends there. I spent my teenage years self-isolating to Morrissey - it was good to go out and celebrate tonight...
#Morrissey
We named our newborn twin boys Ronnie & Roddie after
@ronniewood
&
@rodstewart
from The Faces - one of our favourite bands. Coincidentally, they even have little Mod hairstyles...
Really pleased to announce that as part of
@TalkingPicsTV
‘s Stanley Baker Day on June 28 - the anniversary of his death - I will be interviewing his son Glyn, who will share some wonderful memories of his dad & talk about his career: full info here: :
Just read a David Walliams children’s book to my kids:it was awful.Such a mediocre,uninventive & uninspired story.Some old rubbish about a farting hippo on the moon.Why do so many people think they can write kids’ books?So many other people who do it well.Roald Dahl he is not.
My friend Justin died last week - he was the announcer at St Mary’s stadium for
@SouthamptonFC
& a big Morrissey fan. At yesterday’s game against Liverpool,
@SaintsBrass
gave him a fitting tribute... :-)
Great sold-out
@RichardHawley
gig at
@EventimApollo
last night - the new tracks sounded brilliant, and the set was full of a lot of my favourite songs of his. He’s a national treasure and his band are wonderful too - a really special and memorable gig.
#richardhawley
I wrote a piece on attending my first big rock gig, aged 16 - Depeche Mode at Wembley Arena, in 1990 - for
@americanaUK
:
Be gentle with me, it was my First Time… 🤠🌹🎹 🎸 🎤 💥
Yesterday was so much fun - recording new episodes of the
@CambridgeAudio
Made By Music podcast with Neil Barnes from
@Leftfield
and
@berenyi_miki
. Lovely people with some great stories. Miki didn’t get the cap and glasses memo… 😉 🧢 👓
What is YOUR favorite song from

's seventh studio album 'Out of Time' (1991), originally released 30 years ago this week? | Read our retrospective tribute + listen to the album here:
Hey, thanks
@uncutmagazine
- a cover feature on my favourite album of all time, with interviews by some of my favourite musicians:
@RogerMcGuinn
and
@Johnny_Marr
. I’ll take that. Fab! 👍
Thanks for all the lovely messages of support following the passing of my dad. So many people have shared their memories of him - it’s been very overwhelming, but great to see all the love for him that’s out there. It’s very comforting at this difficult and sad time. X
Tomorrow is my birthday - it will be the first one that I won’t hear from my dad. I’ve been thinking about that today and feeling sad. I’m going to do nice things tomorrow - got the day off: mooching, shopping for records and books, pub lunch and family stuff.
Yesterday, I had my annual hospital check-up following my bladder cancer diagnosis seven years ago. I’m still clear! Such a relief - it’s always a worry. Onwards and upwards. 👍 The cystoscopy has wiped me out, though - feel so tired today. Glad it’s the end of the week.
Really looking forward to interviewing
@thecoralband
tomorrow: their new double concept album, Coral Island, is brilliant. I think it’s their masterpiece. It’s right up my ‘out-of-season seaside town’ side street. Out in April. 🌊 🎢 👻🤡 🎪
I don’t get sentimental on Twitter very often, but for
#InternationalWomenDay2018
I’d like to raise a glass or two to my amazing wife Susie - who’s not on Twitter - for supporting me and also giving me strength during a difficult couple of years health-wise. X
I had an empty space on my Bob Dylan bookshelves that was troubling me. I’ve now solved the problem. I was looking for one of these for a while - finally got one...
Just seen
@Johnny_Marr
play the greatest song ever written, in Manchester, at
@factoryintl
, with an orchestra. And if a ten ton truck kills me on the way back to my hotel, what a way to go out… Best gig I’ve ever seen.
The Bees are back! What a great night in Islington - very emotional. Last year, I was the first journalist to interview them since they reformed - it’s an Isle of Wight thing… 😉 It was a euphoric gig - I’m still buzzing… 🐝 💥 🎺
#thebees
Today’s the first anniversary of my dad’s death [
@johnhannammeets
].I spent some of it doing a music interview - dad would’ve liked that.I also bought a secondhand Dan Dare book - a childhood favourite of his - listened to some music we both enjoyed,and raised a glass to him. ❤️
Great to chat to Nick Power, keyboardist from
@thecoralband
, today about their brilliant new double album Coral Island. We covered a lot of stuff: fairgrounds, end of the pier comedians, old, spooky organ sounds, death discs and our favourite Joe Meek songs. Wonderful!
Absolutely love the new
@thecoralband
single, Wild Bird: strings, twangy guitar and a Spaghetti Western vibe. What’s not to like? It’s for the good, the bad and the ugly.
Anyone for some sophisti-pop? I interviewed
@swingoutsister
about their new retrospective and rarities CD box set on
@CherryRedGroup
for the latest issue of
@hifiplusmag
. Pure class. Teaser here - mag and CD box set out now!
It’s a big one for the blog: I spoke to one of my favourite singer-songwriters,
@RichardHawley
, about his great new album, why he shuns social media, using Sheffield as his muse, playing Scott Walker’s guitar and trying to write songs with Paul Weller:
I have a cold beer and I’m about to watch a live stream of
@paulwellerHQ
playing at The Barbican. I’m going to enjoy some Fat Pop for dinner.
#paulweller
#fatpop
July 2021 was the last time I got to hang out with my dad on the Isle of Wight before he went into hospital in Sept and, sadly, didn’t come out. We loved going to Ryde to visit our fave bookshop, look for secondhand records and eat fish and chips. That’s what I’m doing today.
