For me it had to do with financial issues. Neither I or my parents at the time could afford to have a 16 year old driver on their insurance. I had to find a job first so I could pay for my own insurance so I could drive the family car around. Caused me to be a few months late

What calendar is used depends on what you value more. If you value the solar cycle and seasons more you’d use approximately the 12 month one we have if you value the lunar cycle more you’d adopt something like the 13 month calendar. It’s entirely arbitrary really.
