Life long learner, Head Basketball Coach at Stockton University, graduate St. Augustine/ Wheeling Jesuit, most important a father - thoughts are my own.
@bballbreakdown
Yeh because America's youth needs more cuddling. Tom Izzo is not Bobby Knight and the strength of his relationships with his players is as strong as any.
Good news to close out 2020. The man I pulled out of the bay last night lived. Was a bit worried he died of hypothermia it took me all of 15 minutes to get him untangled from the prop of a boat and the water was 🥶🥶🥶🥶
D3 coaches be grateful.
Was on beach w close d1 coaching friend. Up walks a recently retired iconic coach to say hello. In conversation he said that he and Coach Pop wld have arguments w rest of Team USA staff that being a D3 coach was the best level in basketball to coach. Wow
5 or 6 years ago we won 13 games in last minute of play and went on to win the league.Your margin of error could be one more box out, 1 more great D transition, 1 more unselfish poss,1 great poss of communication. Winning and losing is often separated by fundamentals not talent.
The guys that spend the most time in the gym become guys you have trouble keeping off the floor. bball rewards workers and so does life. How u work as an athlete gives a good indication about your futures. The beauty of sports and really a indication of what lies ahead for others
Our country is a bad athletic team.
We're not connected, it's never my fault, we have bad habits, lack discipline, we talk the talk but don't walk the walk, it's not we before me, we don't love one another, we are not fundamentally sound, we're not coachable,we lack leadership
This is great. The guys that don't play as much have no idea how important they are, it is our job as coaches to try and build them up to this by in. It is also their job to be as great as they can be no matter the role.
Read the lips of the player coming off the bench. “Right now! We’re doing this!” Duke was down 23 points and came back to win. But everyone on the team wanted to win. They had the same objective regardless of playing time. Be this player for your team!
I can't believe how many D1 kids appear to be not interested in using the extra year. I get the high level pros but some of the others? What is their hurry? Job market is not great and the great times in college are hard to duplicate later in life
A perfect storm. A sick PG, a tired group and a ridiculously good opponent. So proud of my kids and not primarily bc of going 26-5 but bc of the unbelievable love they showed each other day in and day out. "Connected" is our slogan and no team embodied that and lived
The culture is strong when practice is at 10 and guys are lifting and shooting before 8. The game rewards those that love it back the others just wonder why it's not going right for them.
Had some time to digest the bad news from yesterday and let our guys concentrate on a game.
But we're in need of prayers.
@CoachHutch24
had a bad heart attack sometime yesterday and your prayers and his strength can help him pull through. Please keep his family in thoughts 🙏
The amount of emails I'm getting from 2021 kids dying for a home is staggering. The limited roster spots is going to trickle dwn for a few years. HS players your intangibles are more important than ever!! Talk on the floor, defend, rebound and play with Passion !!
Thanks for the ❤, a bit embarrassed by the attention. Went to bed a typical coach,second guessing if I had done enough? should I have jumped full in to get man out quicker?If I did wld I have gotten out?Just glad it worked out @ grateful I didn't mind my biz when someone yelled
An honor to have the GOAT Coach Pitino,
@CoachBobWalsh
and
@IonaGaelsMBB
in to use our facility today. I was by no means giving basketball advice this was the best Italian restaurants in AC talk 🤣
This guy usually got accolades on the court not the classroom but he deserves the later. Dj came in as a major at risk student and ended it with 4 A's. Incredible if you know his story. It also reaffirms that being hard on guys for things they are capable is the only way 2 be.
HS/AAU coaches & players do urself a solid and watch some of these games tonight.Particulary recommend R Macon vs Swarthmore and Hamilton and C Newport.Then u will understand why we look at u funny when u say u have a kid above our level.
Get your 15 low d1 kids from NJ and have them play against the 15 best NJAC players and it would be a long day for the kids that think they are above the level.
Watching alot of these D1 games and many of them don't have crowds near as good as we have had our last 3 games! Thanks
@Stockton_edu
community for making the last 3 games unforgettable for our kids !
🏀 👏
Last night didn't go how we wanted but the fact I've got workout partners at 7 am in the hotel gym is a great sign
@MenStockton
@cbg_dj4
and crew will be back🏀🏀
I didn't ask they were here as I arrived.
No better feeling then walking into the gym at 830 for a 10 am shootaround and your 2 freshmen already have a sweat on, one of whom at 20 in 16 minutes last night. 2 best freshmen workers we have had.
Being in great shape: makes bad players average, average players good, good players GREAT. Being in bad shape: makes great players good, good players average, average players bad. Up to you young players what do you want to be ??????
Devastated, we are here. Hutch would have been blown away by the overwhelming reaction. He was a special man a one of a kind. We have all been so lucky to have him in our lives.
Tell our players u have to be tough when tough is needed.Nobody embodied more than my mom.Survived and lived 4 1/2 yrs w something that kills most in a year or 2. Gonna miss the hell out of her she was a sweet woman that fought like hell 😢💔
#cancersucks
Most high school players have no clue what it takes to play at the top of D 3 and unfortunately either do many of their coaches. Both groups have to get out and educate themselves on the different levels of play
Incredible a Atmosphere At the D3 sweet 16 at Ramapo. Anyone who claims they are too good for D3 should have been there tonight to see how good these teams and players are. Should be a requirement for all future college players.
Well wishes for
@CoachHutch24
are so appreciated ! Coach made some progress yesterday and is fighting like hell! Makes me wonder of how important the grit u learn in sports can help one battle against life's curve balls. Life skills through sports !
Great Day to be an Osprey! 🏀🏀🏀 Big Comittment from Millville's All Time Leading scorer Rynell Lawrence. Has
#njac
written all over him.
@ACPressMcGarry
@PhilAnastasia
Been a 3+ long weeks, but update on
@CoachHutch24
! He is truly practicing 1 of our values of 1% better daily. He is gradually being weened off sedation and a breathing ventilator and is able to acknowledge family. He's on the right road!! Thanks for
and keep the 🙏s coming.
I am bored to death. I vow to jump in the Atlantic Ocean every day until there is a live sporting event on TV. Today I have my two favorite assistants Kennedy and Jackson w me.
#coachvscorona
Watching alot of HS hoops today and I can't believe how many off the dribble 3s that were taken. Shooting % on them was about 10%. Kids watch far too much NBA and not enough college hoops. Just so u HS players know
@MenStockton
are hunting layups Fts and catch and shoot 3s
There is no recipe for playing a game and then piling into vans to attend the viewing of a beloved coach, and it wasn't pretty, but we pulled it off. It's been an emotionally taxing stretch, but I'm really proud of
@MenStockton
resilience.
Tyrone Rolls isn't just a African American police Officer in Ocean City he is also one of the most popular people in Ocean City. Not a better guy and def someone I think about when I think of what the good officers are going through right now.
I get a kick out of Miles Sanders voicing team stuff to media. Dude spent first half of season dropping every screen pass thrown to him and I don't think they lose Browns game if he doesn't fumble on first drive near Goal line.
How about some player accountability for a change
Trying to give our guy
@CoachHutch24
something to get his juices going. The power of prayer has been great now let's repost a short video to inspire him to keep fighting his ass off. We love you Hutch the good ain't dying young this time !!!
Best part is I get another week with the seniors!! (Worst part is another 7 day work week) 🤣🤣
I'll take it !!!
So proud....it's never pretty but the group has the heart of its leader
@KyFlanders
31 years after being invited by Coach Hurley to Jersey City I never imagined I would be coaching one of his former players. Tariq Baker scored 20 shortly after this pic.
@SAHSFriarNation
@stocktonospreys
Great kickoff dinner w this young group tonight. Been a long pre season and we are finally ready to test ourselves against a very good team on Sat.
@stocktonospreys
I can't understand why High Schools still have such outdated websites. Why wouldn't they give as much info on their athletic web page as possible so you could easily identify the coach and his contact info?
Would certainly help their students
Send some love to
@MenStockton
@CoachHutch24
who lost his home yesterday to a fire right before our shoot around. Life is bigger than basketball. We ❤ and are 🙏 for you!
Upset for the seniors, nothing to hang our heads at lost to a well oiled machine
@TCNJMBB
.Looking forward to watching them represent the
@NJACSports
in the NCAA tourney!If there is a better D3 player than R Walko I haven't seen him. Congrats!
@CoachMGoldsmith
@Coach_MurdockJr
So proud of the buy in on the defensive end of the floor, guys executed that to perfection especially w such a young team. Such a selfless group that cheers on their team mates success, once again being
#connected
is our thing.
High school players want to stand out? Work on your ability to communicate on the floor and be a positive leader. You will stand out because it's the hardest thing to find
Winning in athletics brings college campuses together and is great for business. (Enrollment)
Well keep striving to do our part
@Stockton_edu
@stocktonospreys
Mick Cronin as tough on his players as anyone out there and his kids literally couldn't stop hugging them. The greatest form of love is accountability. Put the Izzo bashing to rest
Wern't perfect on offense but we are locking people up. Not sure when the last time someone shot better than 40% from the floor on us but its been a while. 5-0 lets gooo!!!!!!!!!!
Young coaches be careful digesting too much content regarding plays. It's fun but doesn't control winning. Winning happens bc ur team plays harder, is tougher, and you have high standards wirh things that really affect the scoreboard.
Opening day for
@MenStockton
! We're excited for a great challenge. Trying to go into this year with a bit more perspective and Gratitude. The world is a crazy place right now and we are involved in a game.
#verylucky
Heck this was Gerry and I most games.Iron sharpens Iron.If there is one thing I have come to understand is some conflict is good. If not for open conflict human nature will give you passive aggressive conflict. One kills organizations the other makes them succeed.
Can't wait
@MenStockton
first practice is Sunday!As always practices are always open feel free to reach out for our practice schedule.If your a HS coach w players that have college aspirations bring them down I think the intensity and talent level would be eye opening for some.
The saying is you never want the worst job in a league and Lasalle is the worst job in the A10. Worst funding & by far worst facilities. Not only was Coach G’s teams very competitive they vastly over achieved.The administration should look in the mirror they’ve been the issue.
Big one today at 430 against a terrific Johns Hopkins team. Every local Hs player that wants to play at the next level should be here to see the quality of players at our level.
NJ hs kids should come see an NJAC game at say Jersey City against another good league team and ask yourself if your ready for the physicality of college basketball. Even the low d 1 kids I’ve seen aren’t jumping in and playing in that game yet
I thought maybe the pandemic would bring back the art of shooting in driveways and home courts. Went on a long bike ride probably went past 30-40 hoops at houses and not one kid was out there shooting The Rock.
#sad
My game wouldn't have skipped a beat.....
We are excited to still be playing! It isn't always fun, but it pays to challenge yourself with a difficult schedule year in and year out. Our league offers part of that as every night is a grind.
#njac
#D3hoops
Great night celebrating the career of Josh Blamon. Went from playing 17 total minutes as a frosh to being leading scorer as a sophomore..to eventual G League player.
So young players when your not playing early on put your head down and work!!
Dj's dad is a super star so many parents of young athletes could learn from him.
Mr Campbell moved DJ out of Jamaica as a middle schooler to provide a better life for Dj and his sibling.
He would call me many Mondays to ask about DJ in class he never once mentioned basketball
It more than them. The group set a high high standard when it comes to being great people. Thanks for the ride men we were ridiculously lucky to spend 6 days a week with you for the last 5 months ! ❤
Thanks to everyone
@stocktonospreys
@Stockton_edu
@Stockton_Alumni
for great support yesterday vs
@PennBasketball
.It was a great experience to play at the best arena in the country vs a terrific team.That wasn’t just a D1 team that’s a tournament team, lots of lessons to take
Bitter sweet to see your sons graduate. I hope we
@MenStockton
prepared you well Rico and Big O! The way u 2 turned reaffirmed that we our Love Tough way of doing things is the right way. I am proud and love you both, thanks for the 4 years !
Disappointing end to our season Friday but proud of the group for another title appearance and trip to the NCAA Tournament. To the Seniors thank you for everything you've given
@MenStockton
, we will miss you! Good bye to the 23/24 season, the work for 24/25 is well under way.
as I tell our guys the Sun is going to come home tomorrow win or lose. Would not want to run and reflect on the season anywhere else than the Jersey Shore! So grateful to be
@Stockton_edu
!
The most important work a coach can do is an immediate debrief on season.What went right,what went wrong, and how can I improve.Ours at its core;
We never defended well enough to beat great teams on bad shooting nights. I'll do a deep dive on how I can become a better def coach🏀
I am tired of the news, tired of politicians, tired of complaints of politicians, tired of Fauci, tired of being a bad kindergarten teacher, tired of cold windy spring days..........boy I am going to enjoy that first adult beverage on a deck 😁
Right on by
@dshow23
on
@BBallImmersion
if your playing zone def w kids below 13 years of age ur coaching as if its all about u as a coach not about developing kids. Shouldn't even be allowed
Most High School and College players don't do it anymore but Jackson is always out there practicing to reach 10', the best part is he doesn't get discouraged and loves the process of trying even at 35 degrees.
The kids that keep this joy become special the others underachieve!
What players/fans often think wins games does not! The loose balls,the laying ur body on the line to take a charge,executing offense, taking the right shots, guarding the opponent based on the scout and rotational def wins and loses games.If your a Coach this stuff keeps u awake
Heck of an honor to get the G Larry James award this year. Larry James was
@Stockton_edu
@stocktonospreys
former Athletic Director. He was also an Olympic Gold Medalist and a one time Olympic World Record holder.
Parents, Coaches encourage your kids to thank the schools that recruited them even if they go somewhere else! Amazing how many kids we we probably spent 10-15 nights away from our families for that don’t do that. Kind of leaves you feeling lucky that the kid isn’t coming.
Dj will get credit for this play but the fact that he constantly guards bigger players, leads us in rebounding and gets his hands on balls like he is M Thybulle is what amazes me.
