The problem with Spielberg's WEST SIDE STORY is that beautiful direction and technical mastery will never be enough if your two leads cannot sell your story and have no chemistry. Elgort was woefully miscast and he had the charm of a wooden stump.

a lot of us have been revisiting Spielberg's WEST SIDE STORY, and I've still never seen a movie strike a better balance between dreamy old-hollywood visuals and a more contemporary kind of heightened realism, often within a single shot. it's the platonic ideal of a modern musical

CONCLAVE being the actual best film in the awards race, one that we needed (not one that we deserved). That despite its viral brat edits and rupaul's drag race memes, is a thoughtful, earnest and sincere film about spirituality and faith, but you people aren't ready to hear it.

I really dislike this take that fans don't like how this character because he isn't "traditionally masculine" (i.e only like that form of masculinity). We don't like him because the acting is so lacking that it cannot make us handwave the weaknesses in the character's writing.

@lunardeiity Wong Kar-Wai directed this shoot he didn't photograph it. Anyone who knows Wong Kar-Wai's work knows that his stills and this type of photography he has is done by Wing Shya. You can find some of the original images here in this interview with Wing Shya:

I think along with the 2023 film I AM WHAT I AM (2022) starring Toko Miura this is like one of the only proper depictions of asexuality and also how you can be both asexual and identify as a lesbian. #TsukuTabe

To put into perspective: this is an ALL-TIME record, not just for animated films. Some cinemas have screenings from 7am, showing it at least 40 times a day. Last year's Weathering With You and Frozen 2 did 15.2 mill and 18.2 mill which were both records.

Happy 5th Anniversary to THE HANDMAIDEN, a film that will go down as a classic. I wrote about the significance of gloves previously in the film so here are my favourite glove related shots

Imagine casting the biggest rockstars of their respective countries (Japan and the UK) in a war film about their queer desire for one another, and also a comedian who would go on to make his own deconstructions of masculinity in the yakuza and samurai genres.
