Labour’s candidate for Finchley & Golders Green ~ sarahsackmanforfgg
@gmail
.com ~ Environmental Lawyer ~ Community Campaigner ~ Mum to two amazing girls
Rishi Sunak has just called a General Election. After 14 years of Conservative chaos, it’s time for a change.
I was born and raised here and now I want to serve Finchley and Golders Green as your MP.
Vote Labour on 4th July 🌹
Sadiq Khan is a mensch. Heading straight to Golders Green from conference to reassure Jewish Londoners. His leadership over the last few days has been much needed and appreciated.
Good to spend this evening here in Golders Green - including breaking bread with the Jewish community here at Darna.
The last few days have been deeply distressing - and my prayers are with everyone who has been affected.
It's so important Londoners come together and unite.
It's happening! I have applied today to be Labour’s next candidate for Finchley & Golders Green.
I've spent the last decade fighting for our communities, speaking truth to power & giving a voice to people who need it most.
Now I need your help to turn this seat red.
Thank you so much Finchley & Golders Green! 🌹🌹🌹
The hard work to win here starts today. I’m determined to turn this seat red!
Together, we can win here!
My friend
@lucianaberger
has rejoined this changed Labour Party and is backing me in Finchley and Golders Green.
Vote Labour on 4th July. It's time for change.
Sometimes you get the pleasure of working with your real life heroes 🦸♂️! Great to catch up with Gordon Brown on home turf in Fife last week and to be working with him on Labour’s Commission on the UK’s Future
Great to kick off the morning in Barnet with
@Keir_Starmer
@DavidLammy
and wonderful local volunteers on Labour’s National Campaign Day hearing from voters about cost of living, COP27 and the housing crisis
I regularly eat at Pita restaurant a place which residents, Jewish and non Jewish, alike enjoy.
This criminal damage and the targeting of British Jews is truly appalling. There is no place for this in our close knit and diverse corner of North London. This will not stand.
A Kosher restaurant in Golders Green, north London, vandalised and a bridge metres away branded with ‘Free Palestine’.
As in previous conflicts involving Israel, British Jews are being targeted amid a rise in antisemitic attacks
I am shocked and sorry to hear that Mike Freer has decided to stand down at the next election and would like to thank him for his years of service to our community. 1/3
John Mann, Frank Field, Kate Hoey and Graham Stringer have voted with the Tories to save Theresa May's shambolic government and ensure a destructive Tory Brexit, or possibly a no deal calamity.
They should all be kicked out of the Labour Party.
I couldn’t be prouder to be standing to represent the place where I grew up
At this election, there’s so much at stake (excuse the pun 🤣)
Labour is ready 🌹
.
@BorisJohnson
suggests the UK could pull out of the European Convention on Human Rights to force through Rwanda deportations
'Will it be necessary to change some laws to help us [avoid legal challenges] as we go along? It may very well be', the PM said
Not sure what possessed Diane Abbott to write this appalling letter — its historically illiterate. What on earth does she think happened to Jews and Travellers in the 1930s and 40s?
I spent this week at Auschwitz listening to Holocaust survivors expressing their fears that people would forget what they went through. And here it is, in plain sight.
I'm really excited, and frankly humbled, to have the endorsement of
@AlfDubs
.
Alf Dubs has been a towering figure in our movement for decades. His work standing up for child refugees has been an inspiration.
Thank you
@AlfDubs
for your support, it means the world to me.
“Israel has every right to defend herself”
Labour leader Keir Starmer says the “perpetrators of [the attack on Israel] have deliberately pushed back the prospect of peace agreements”
#BBCLauraK
Over 13 years, the Tories have failed to fix Britain's housing crisis.
Having hiked mortgage payments & failed to build, they can no longer claim to be the party of home ownership.
As your Labour MP, I will fight for affordable homes to buy and rent here in our community.
Warm, human, principled and humble
@Keir_Starmer
desert island discs are a brilliant listen. If you want to get to know what makes him the leader and person he is have a listen
I have known Wes since our university days so I know how amazing he would be as Health Secretary. Our NHS needs him!
Thank you for coming
@wesstreeting
- you were a big hit in Finchley Central! 🌈❤️
Vote Labour !
They were careless people…They smashed up things … and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness.” F Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby could have been describing today’s Tory Party
Very excited to have made it onto the shortlist for the Finchley & Golders Green selection today!
I'll be out chatting with Labour members for the next two weeks, growing our campaign to turn this seat red.
I can't wait to hear your ideas so get in touch!
Thread: Voter ID laws will lead to US-style voter suppression. The proposals would hit BAME voters and other marginalised groups hardest and damage our democracy 1/
Today's the day! If you're a Labour member in Finchley & Golders Green then it would be fantastic to have your support to be your next Labour candidate!
See full details below👇
Together, we can win here.
Today
@Keir_Starmer
set out a path for renewing the UK’s democracy, kickstarting the economy in every part of our country and cleaning up politics. Labour will ensure the biggest ever transfer of power from Westminster to the British people. 🧵
Today we remember the victims of the Holocaust. The 6 million Jews and 5 million Roma, LGBT, disabled people murdered by the Nazis.
The unimaginable scale of the horror can let us think this was out of the ordinary. But it was something done by ordinary people to ordinary people
Over the moon to have just been nominated by members across all three local branches. Your support puts me one step closer to becoming the next Labour candidate for Finchley & Golders Green. Thank you!
Together, we can win here.
Final push to defeat Theresa Villiers and her vision of Hard Brexit and Little England tomorrow. Supporting the fabulous
@EmmaWhysall
and her team. Anyone with an hour to spare tomorrow get to Chipping Barnet or another marginal to stop Johnson and co getting a majority
The Equality & Human Rights Commission has given Labour a clean bill of health today. Goes without saying, this is a hugely important day for both Labour & the Jewish community.
Proud of the tireless work of
@Keir_Starmer
&
@JewishLabour
to help us reach this important milestone
We should have been able to face each other in the polls based on our ideas and merits. Instead, politics is now so often skewed by violent language, hate and the dangers of social media. I am determined for this to change. 2/3
Didn’t Steve Baker vote to repeal the Human Rights Act just a few yrs back! That’s the thing about human rights - they’re universal - you can’t just cite them when it suits you and undermine them when they don’t
Tory MP Steve Baker on lockdown measures: "This is a major infringement on a right to a family life. I'm looking at the European Convention on Human Rights as I speak to you."
Personal news: After 13 very happy years
@FTB_law
, working and learning from some great colleagues, I am really excited to be joining the brilliant public law team
@matrixchambers
- I can't wait to get started!
Matrix is thrilled to welcome two new members to the public law team: Jesse Nicholls &
@sarahsackman
. Sarah joined Matrix on 6th September. Jesse will officially join Matrix in late-October and is currently on paternity leave until the end of January 2022
I am gutted about Barnet. The Council is dreadful - destroying council houses, library & children’s services, failing on basics like bins and parking & outsourcing local democracy to Capita - we badly need change.
Instead some brilliant Lab Cllrs have lost their seats
Thrilled that
@anne_clarke
has won and increased her majority in Barnet and Camden.
From winning by 2 votes in her first Childs Hill council seat to a storming majority this is what hardworking Labour representatives achieve! It also shows us that every vote matters. 🌹🌹🌹
I'm delighted to be on the long list of candidates for Finchley & Golders Green.
Thank you to everyone who has shown their support so far. Together, we can win here!
And thank you to
@CommunityUnion
for your endorsement today.
It is both disgraceful and revealing that the Workers’ Party have put a candidate with these views up for election in the constituency with Britain’s largest Jewish community
Over the coming weeks, we will work hard to counter this hateful extremism at every opportunity
The Workers Party GB candidate for FINCHELY AND GOLDERS GREEN, Mez Roth[Derak], has shared a conspiratorial post about the Jewish festival of Passover which is described as the "celebration of the mass murder of children".

This is what an 'overwhelmed NHS' looks like. We must not look away - powerful article from
@chrischirp
on the crisis many will experience but most of us won’t see
Proud to have the support of
@GMB_union
- my trade union!
The Tory cost-of-living crisis is making life incredibly difficult for workers right across the country. So being part of a strong, effective union like the GMB is more important than ever.
Together, we can win here.
Certainly not taking anything for granted. We will work hard and earn every vote. But it’s clear people want a change. Join us if you want to make it happen
Solidarity with
@lucianaberger
one of the bravest and most principled ppl in politics. She is a brilliant, hard working MP whose campaigning on mental health and against racism deserves our support. Those who undermine her don’t share our Labour values
London! We did it!
Im so proud that our city came together to reject the politics of division and the hate pedalled by the twitter bots.
Londoners are committed to a greener, fairer and more inclusive future.
Still the greatest city in the world!

🌹🌹🌹
This is such welcome news, welcome back Luciana.
Another important milestone, as those who were forced out under the previous leadership now feel comfortable & positive about returning to the Labour family
EXCLUSIVE: Luciana Berger has rejoined the Labour Party.
Keir Starmer says sorry for “disgusting abuse” under Jeremy Corbyn and praises “brave” decision to leave over antisemitism.
Berger vows to help “continue what you have started” and beat the Tories.
*some personal news* I’m chuffed to have been shortlisted by
@legal500
as Government & Third Sector Junior of the year. There are some fabulous barristers on the list who do really important work and I’m honoured to be mentioned in the same breath as them
Brilliant election piece
@Freedland
- “July 4 is a day of reckoning for the chaos and calamity the Conservatives have brought and for the harm they have done. On election day, the Tories don’t deserve merely to lose. They deserve to be punished.”
I love democracy! Pleased to vote for
@SadiqKhan
&
@anne_clarke
today.
They show the difference Labour in power makes
🌹free schools meals
🌹new council housing
🌹support for youth clubs
🌹protecting children’s lungs
Decisions are made by those who turn up.

As ever, I would like to thank the CST, Tell Mama and the Met Police for their ongoing work during this difficult time for our caring, diverse community. 3/3
Inspirational evening to celebrate
@Jewish_Care
which does much brilliant work in Finchley & Golders Green caring for older and vulnerable residents. I have been privileged to visit their GG campus where I met with residents and staff and where my dad loves being a volunteer
Whilst the Tories go to war with each other and abandon all pretence of governing it’s good to see
@UKLabour
@TulipSiddiq
keeping the astronomical costs of childcare at the heart of the political agenda
Today in Parliament, I spoke about the Tories' refusal to address sky-high childcare costs.
@TheIFS
found that 40% of eligible families are unable to access childcare support because of the Government's confusing eligibility rules.
Ministers must act now to support parents.
Brilliant day out in Finchley talking to residents. I had lifelong Tory voters tell me they’re ready for change and will be voting Labour 🌹 at the next election 🗳️
Joined thousands of others in central London, community leaders and politicians from all parties calling for the immediate release of hostages taken by Hamas
#BringThemHome
Wishing everyone celebrating Pesach in Finchley & Golders Green Chag Sameach. As Jews remember winning their freedom, we call for the swift return of the hostages in Gaza
#bringthemhome
🎗️ and an end to a conflict which has caused so much suffering to Israelis & Palestinians alike
The shame of this. How Suella Braverman can continue in her role as AG is anyones guess. The ECHR was drafted by British lawyers and protects universal rights. Only Russia and Belarus are not part of the European human rights system. That tells you everything you need to know.
An shameful statement, and also Orwellian in its reversal of basic facts. The ECHR has done far more to protect the victims of trafficking, and refugees, than that cruel Rwanda policy.
I signed this letter calling on Israel's govt to halt annexation plans. Im proud to join far more eminent jurists, many of whom are heroes of mine, in speaking out.

This country is in desperate need of change. It’s crying out for competence, compassion, intellectual seriousness and a plan. What we heard today is that
@Keir_Starmer
offers all four. Change is coming.
Bring on the next election 🗳️
I was joined yesterday by Shadow Chancellor
@RachelReevesMP
in Finchley. We spoke with local businesses and residents to hear how mortgage rate rises and rising living costs are impacting their lives. Tory economic incompetence is costing us all. It’s time for a change
To have my friend and mentor
@margarethodge
join me in Finchley and Golders Green was genuinely such a joy.
On a day that Labour announces plans for childcare to be with one of the stalwarts of Sure Start felt very special 🌹
The path to a Labour government runs through Finchley & Golders Green.

Is it just me or are other ppl underwhelmed by the vaccination programme? We should be straining every sinew to get ppl vaccinated. It would save lives and be a massive ecom boost. Instead the roll out seems sluggish, non-transparent, with govt diverted on Brexit -get on with it!
From my family to yours and to all Jewish friends, neighbours and residents right across Finchley and Golders Green a Shana Tova u metuka - wishing you a happy, healthy and sweet New Year!

in the by election - what better way to see the back of Boris Johnson and send a message to this Govt that their time is up!
Brilliant to have the inspirational

join with us in Finchley today! Your support means the world to us! 🌹🌹and thanks to
@FGGLabour
superstars who turn out week in week out come ☔️ come ☀️
I spoke at the Labour conference about the events in the Middle East. I condemn the vile acts of terror by Hamas which have wrought misery on both the Israeli and Palestinian peoples.
Pilots run in 2019 showed 100s of voters turned away from polling stations and didnt even count those deterred by the ID rules.
Whats more we say they were unlawful. The Supreme Court has said our case is arguable and will hear it soon
@LeighDay_Law

I'm very much looking forward to casting my vote for
@sarahsackman
- one of the Guardian's "rising stars who could play a big part in a Labour government"!
Mike Freer says we should judge politicians on deeds not words. I agree. As the year draws to a close this is the report card of Finchley’s MP. He backed Boris and backed Liz Truss and her mini budget causing misery to millions. I can’t wait to get campaigning for change in 2023!
It means the world to have the support of
@JewishLabour
!
It's a privilege to be the Vice Chair of JLM where I love working with so many inspiring Jewish activists from across our Movement.
If selected, I will champion our values & work to rebuild support for Labour.
This is exactly what we were talking about last night
@chrischirp
Many ppl don't realise how much worse things have got in the NHS in the last 13 years. When Labour left power we had a first class health service. Look at the state it finds itself in under this Govt.
The NHS was highly rated in 2009, with high satisfaction levels, and relatively small numbers waiting for treatment. It has got steadily worse since 2010. It needs more money AND action on the social determinants of health.
Appalling graffiti
@Phoenixcinema
I’m not going to dignify the criminals who did this damage by reposting the image of their disgusting action. This community cinema in a diverse neighbourhood is screening a documentary about the 7 October pogrom. The cinema should screen it.
What a day!
@JewishLabour
new year conference fizzing with ideas on from environment to education. Sharing a stage with
@Keir_Starmer
@lucianaberger
@mikekatz
was a special moment for me. We’ve changed our party, we’re now ready for an election to change the country
Can’t take my eyes off the news. Family and friends are in shelters, or working overtime in hospitals or being called up to the army. It’s ordinary people who suffer every time.
This is not resistance, it’s terrorism and must be unequivocally condemned.
Fantastic walk about in East Finchley this afternoon with my friend Cllr
@ArjunMittra
hearing about local issues and the Council’s exciting ideas for improving the public realm. It’s true what the say - you can’t move 10 yards without a resident stopping Arjun to say hello!
5years ago today (has it really been that long!) I had the privilege of working with the best team of volunteers in the country in
@FGGLabour
- what a campaign - we were so full of hope that day!
@AdamWagner1
This change is the subject of legal challenge! I act for Neil Coughlan Together with a crack team
@LeighDay_Law
and blackstone chambers. We’ve been waiting since the summer to see whether we have PTA from the court of appeal
Making hay while the sun shines! Absolutely cracking campaign day in the Garden Suburb - so many new Labour voters! Im determined to listen and earn your trust 🌹
To all the volunteers, you are an inspiration. Change is coming!
Thrilled to chat with The New Statesman’s
@RMCunliffe
about the significance of the Finchley & Golders Green seat, the Labour Party transformed and my Jewish values in this week’s New Statesman.
After
@MichaelMarmot
highlights huge health inequalities across UK,
@MayorofLondon
announces free school meals for London’s primary sch children. A policy with tangible economic, educational and health benefits for all of London’s children. The difference Labour makes in power!
I love Bevis Marks Synagogue. It’s where I got married & it’s the oldest synagogue in the UK.
In 2021, I led the legal team that saved this beautiful Grade I listed building from an overbearing development.
Now it’s under threat again. Join me in writing to the City to object
Bevis Marks Synagogue, a Grade-1 listed building, is callling on the public to formally object to plans for a 45-storey tower that will overshadow this 300-year old landmark.
Join us in taking action by submitting your objections before 15 May 2024.
The result in Finchley and Golders Green is not a done deal. Labour is the only option to unseat the Conservatives in this seat which has been blue for too long 🌹🗳️
Double vaxxed baby! Honestly the biggest thrill of 2021. Huge gratitude to all the brilliant scientists, NHS workers, systems designers & volunteers who made it possible. Fitting to be at
@TheCrick
Once again "British Jews" is trending on Twitter. I give up sometimes. Why wasnt the decision on JC's complaint deferred until a new independent process was set up. Surely that would have been the way to deal with this.
Wonderful to welcome
@DavidLammy
MP to Finchley and my home community
@NNLS_Masorti
tonight.
David spoke brilliantly about being a North Londoner, his belief in multiculturalism, his loathing of populism and campaigning to bring back night schools. Thank you for being with us
The spiralling cost of childcare and the impact it is having on the life chances of mainly young women should be a key fault line at the next election. Why not treat childcare like any other public service?
@PregnantScrewed
NEW: For the first time in decades, the number of young women not working to look after family is starting to rise
As 1/3 of women barely break even after returning to work, Britain's childcare costs are pushing women out of work
@PregnantScrewed
Taking a break from the news for a mo, I’m on route to
@LabourParty
conference. Like Glasto for political junkies minus the camping!
Our party is bursting with ideas and optimism. I can’t wait to get Keir Starmer elected as PM
See some of you there!
