UK photorealist oil painter of sweets, toys, the kitsch & colourful 🌈 Bipolar survivor. Mental Health advocate. Judge on Britain’s Best Young Artist

@charliersmith1
I got sectioned in 2017, after a psychotic episode, this was followed by a year long depression. I too didn’t think I would ever recover. But we do, we are both proof of that. I’ve been episode free now for almost 2 years which is amazing! I hope you will be too. All the best xx
Finished this today, it’s only 10x12 inches, I’m planning a series of them. It’s really surprised me, wasn’t sure I could pull it off! But I’m really pleased with how it’s turned out.
It will be exhibited at
@AAFLondon
in October with
@ByardArt
I’ve been sectioned, I’ve also been on the GCSE art exam paper TWICE! Mental health problems don’t mean your life is ruined, you can recover & thrive. That’s my message for today 🤘
I am SO excited to announce that I am a guest judge on Britain’s Best Young Artist on CBBC!! My episode is on Thurs 10th Feb & will also be available on iPlayer.
Presented by Ricky Wilson & Vick Hope, the show sees 27 budding young artists from around the UK compete. So TUNE IN!!
I can finally reveal my secret commission!!! Here’s my snowman for the Hitchin ‘Walking with the Snowman’ trail this Christmas! Thank you so much
@Danny_D_Pearson
for asking me to paint a snowman. It’s been a wonderful project, & my first piece of public art!!
4 years ago today I was being sectioned, 4 years on I painted this! Gold Twist 25x30cm oil on canvas.
If you’re suffering with your mental health, don’t lose hope, hold on as life gets better, trust me 💛
Tomorrow I get the keys to my new home w/my boyfriend...I can’t quite believe how my life has moved on in the last few years. In 2017 I thought life was over & there was no coming back from my breakdown which saw me sectioned & ended my marriage.
But life goes on... HOLD ON!!
FINISHED!! It took a while, but I got there in the end! Really happy with the end result. Now I just need a title... any ideas?? It’s 50x80cm, oil on canvas, as per...! Please share if you like it, ta 🍭
Fab!
Finished! Oil on canvas 50x50cm. The original is available but there will defo be a print too. Email sarah

After spending yesterday in a school, I can see what an incredible job teachers do, & how many hats they have to wear, teacher, counsellor, peacekeeper, it’s full on!! So just want to big up & thank all the amazing teachers out there! You rock! 🙌
3 yrs ago I was single, living in a one bed flat after losing my home & my marriage ending, not painting & in the longest depression of my life.
3 yrs on I live in a lovely house with my boyfriend & our cat & am the busiest I’ve ever been with my work.
Hold on. Things change.
I’ve LOST 3 STONE! I started the 5:2 diet at the start of the year, along with regular exercise & quitting drinking. For someone with
#bipolar
& battling weight gain due to psychiatric meds this is a BIG DEAL! I’m proof it’s possible. So DON’T be put off meds, they can save lives
This may be a huge case of me blowing my own trumpet but I don’t care! A teacher emailed me today saying I was a great role model for her students... made my day 😀
My psychiatrist told me today that it is rare to see someone recover so fully from the type of psychotic episode I had in 2017. She said it showed a great deal of strength, determination & resilience. I came away feeling proud at what I’ve achieved & really want to inspire others
Feeling quite emotional this evening in a good way, the last 24hrs have been a bit of a whirlwind for me. Talking with teachers, key figures in art education, & realising I have a voice & could potentially help in a matter so close to my heart
#moreARTnotless
Finished!! So great to finish the week with a finished painting. ‘Marble Dream’ 1mx1m, oil on canvas.
Client described it as ‘incredible’, so so pleased 😀
Please do share if you like it, ta!
‘Fried Breakfast’ 40x40cm oil on canvas.
This commission has been such a lovely surprise for me. When I was approached to paint a fry up I really wasn’t sure I could make it work, I was so wrong! There were so many elements within it that I could really have fun with, loved it!
I had a massive breakdown last year, truly lost the plot & was hospitalised, but I’m grateful my head is recovering & I’m determined to move forward from it & lead a successful life...
#MentalHealthAwareness
To anyone suffering mentally right now, DON’T give up. I hit rock bottom 3 yrs ago, enduring a psychotic episode that saw me sectioned, my marriage ended & I lost my home. But here I am 3 yrs on, with a wonderful boyfriend, a new home & a future...
#MentalHealthAwarenessWeek2020
The biggest decision of my life has been to not have children. My reasons are mainly due to my bipolar, not wanting to pass it on, or for them to grow up exposed to it as I did. But I don’t think I’ve ever truly wanted them & I now feel that’s ok, & not weird, it’s right for me.
4 years ago today I got sectioned for a psychotic episode of mania. I was in hospital for a month. When I came out my marriage was over & I sunk into the deepest low of my life that lasted a year.
4 years on I’m living my best ever life. Things DO get better. Hold on!
2 years ago today I got sectioned under section 2 of the mental health act...so spent 28 days in hospital. It was one of the most scariest, surreal, educational, yet amazing experiences of my life, I have no regrets...
And I can’t believe how much better my life is 2 years on!
Paint with me! Here’s a video of me guiding you through a simple & fun painting exercise. Something for you & the kids to try while at home. Please share!! Ta! via

Wow! From an art teacher…
‘I showed some of my yr8 art students one of your time lapse videos of you doing a painting this week and they were mesmerised- one student said to me “so this is like her job, she actually makes money from something she loves doing?… wow” 🥰’
I’m thrilled to announce my painting ‘Kaisers Rock!’ will be exhibited as part of an exciting exhibition at York Art Gallery, curated by
@KaiserChiefs
! ‘When All Is Quiet’ opens next Friday the 14th December & runs until mid March...
5 years ago I spent my 40th in a psychiatric hospital having a tribunal… 5 years on I spent my 45th on a boat in the south of France having a picnic.
Life evolves, we heal, things get better. However bleak it feels, don’t give up 💚
Due to severe mental health problems in recent years, I really lost my way with my painting... I can happily say completing my marble piece yesterday has been a huge confidence boost & left me feeling excited to paint again... 👩🎨
FINISHED!! Marble Galaxy, 60x120cm, oil on canvas.
I started this painting last November, & there were times I thought it would never be finished, but here it is! Boom 💥 very pleased 🌈let’s hope the client likes it...!!

If you’d have told me while I was in a psychiatric hospital under a section 2, that 5 years later I would be on a tv art show as a guest judge, I would not have believed you in a million years!!!!
The creative industries bring in over 100 billion to UK economy each year, at the same time creative subjects are being squeezed in schools!
How does that make any sense?!
Teachers tell me their students give up art as they don’t think they’ll get a ‘proper job’, it’s a myth!!
I think my darling Dad would have been super proud that I’m studied in schools across the UK & around the world & that I’ve been on the GCSE paper twice! I dearly wish he was still around to see it all… I pursued my art because of his encouragement, love & support ❤️
I’ve been recovered from my last depression a month today!! It’s been quite a month, but I’m the most stable & happy I’ve been in yonks! The aim is to keep well now. I’ve got LOTS of tools at my disposal, so fingers x the future will remain bright... 🤞
LOVE my new mini (well second hand!) The last time I owned one was when I bought one when I was manic 6 yrs ago & I had to sell it when I got sectioned as my license got revoked. Buying this is a huge milestone for me. And I feel like Princess Peach in Mario Kart!! ❤️
Colour for your feed today from the archives ‘Andy’s crayons’ 50x50cm oil on canvas 2014. This was a commission with the most beautiful, deeply personal story behind it. Lovely to paint & my homage to Audrey Flack. Pls share if you like it, ta x
‘Toy Box’ is finished!! It’s 60x80cm oil on canvas.
Feels ace to finish a painting, especially on a Friday! This piece has been quite complex to paint with all the varying shifts in focus, but I am super happy with it… and the client loves it!!
Have a great wknd everyone!!
Last night was THE best private view I’ve EVER had!!! Massive thank you to all of you who came & made it such an unforgettable night! Love you all!!! 🙏🤗❤️
ART TEACHERS!! I’m having a film made as a resource for schools. Me in my studio talking thru my work & career, & feat questions from students. If you want your students questions to poss be used, email them to sarah

Hope you like it too! Pls RT if you do!! Ta x
She’s FINISHED!! Meet ‘Butterfly’! So pleased to have finally fulfilled my dream of painting a unicorn! The colours really pop, even more so in real life. Just got to paint her companion ‘Flower’ now...

What a day I’ve had in Parliament?!! Meeting MP’s, discussing Samarivans & attending
#ArtNow
- an Inquiry into the state of Art and Design Teaching in Early Years, Primary and Secondary Education. There’s work to be done there but on the whole all very positive!!
We have a new total for Samarivans after the initial auction for Jodie Whittaker’s fell through. We re-listed it alongside other pieces & this is our new total, it’s still phenomenal! It’s not over! We’re doing signed prints of Jodie’s & we’re making a BOOK of all the samarivans!
Today has been momentous as I finally got my driving license back. It was revoked after my episode of psychosis in 2017. It’s a huge milestone for me 🙌
I painted this little glass sweet last week, it’s only 25x30cm. The client’s son found it in a house they’d just bought & thought of me, so his mum commissioned me to paint it for him & his wife as a gift.
I really enjoyed it & it’s given me ideas for some other small pieces.

Because everything can and WILL change, you will NOT feel this pain forever, dig deep, believe & just keep putting one foot in front of the other, even if it’s just pigeon steps...
Congratulations to Makenzy Beard, Year 9, whose painting has been selected for exhibition at the

Just delivered Sweet Heaven to it’s new home! Simon first saw my work in London when he was 16, & told himself he would own an original one day! So dreams do come true!!
It was such a joyful commission to do, I must admit a bit of me was sad to see it leave the studio!
I don’t often tweet when I’m low, but I’m really battling at the moment. Not after sympathy, just being honest about my mental health & in need of some good vibes please twitter fam

Had the loveliest email from a dad who’s daughter just got A** in her art GCSE, he wants to bring her to my studio & said he will drive however far, as he wants to inspire her to become an artist & follow her dreams. Something he didn’t do himself with his art & deeply regrets.
I know it’s crazy, but I’m nervous about painting this in oils tomorrow! It’s my most detailed piece for a few years, once I get stuck in, I’m sure I’ll be fine🤞
I’m going to produce a hardback book of my paintings! And I’m going to use Kickstarter, anyone used it & any tips please?
Also hands up if you would want a copy of the book??
It’s 5 years since I was sectioned. And the last 3 have been the best years of my life… so if you feel broken, hold on, as there’s every chance the best is yet to come 💚
Here’s my list of tools I use for managing my

4 years ago I was living off ESA renting a one bedroom flat.
4 years on I support my boyfriend & I through my business & am getting a mortgage.
Things change, even if you feel stuck & utterly hopeless, hang in there. I’m living proof you can turn your life around 💚
First time mentioning my bipolar on national radio…I’ll keep talking about my experiences, in the hope it normalises mental health disorders. 1 in 50 will be diagnosed with
