Plus, I don’t think Hua Cheng wanted to be in love with Xie Lian. He wanted to be a loyal follower without expectations— his devotion and his love are two separate truths for one soul. XL also loved Wu Ming, but as a believer, then he fell in love with HC as a romantic partner.

The meaning of gege just can’t really be translated word for word. Similar to how you may not want to translate Hua Cheng to “Flower City”, gege prbly shouldn’t have been cut. You still get the general love story, but you do miss out on the complete thing when you cut like that
