Saddened to hear that Mutsumi Inomata (いのまたむつみ) has passed away. She's known for many beautiful character designs & art for the Tales of video games, and OVAs like Leda, Windaria & The Weathering Continent, but one of her first jobs was as a key animator on Urusei Yatsura.
“If I hadn't become a manga artist, I would be the worst as a human being. I wouldn't have anything to talk about with people in my workplace, I would come back to a gloomy, cheap apartment & say how tired I was while I turned on the lights, and sluggishly took off my stockings."
Soichiro and Shampoo are the official mascots of the Inagaki Animal Clinic in Niigata City, Rumiko Takahashi's hometown. She did a new illustration for their sign. They've been in business since 1999 all the way to today!

"In order to make Ranma recognizable at a glance whether as a man or a woman when I was designing the characters, the idea of a pigtail came up." -Rumiko Takahashi, 1988.
Takahashi-sensei mentioned referring to magazines for some of her designs. As an art historian this excited me. Over the years I've been able to find only a few of the references she has used. Hopefully one day I'll find more. (J.C. Leyendecker and Ranma 1/2 ch. 166) (2/24)

Megan Thee Stallion names Kagome the definitive anime 'hot girl'. “Definitely Kagome from Inuyasha,” “She got all the boys fighting over her; she’s running around with her jewelry around her neck trying to put it all back together, and she just always comes out on top.
Takahashi: When I was redrawing the face for the volume release, a rumor spread that I had not drawn that picture. Furthermore, they used the drawing I had done before I redrew it for the posters. I almost felt like I was being mocked (laughs). Like, how dare you?
In obviously very disappointing news a number of episodes of the new Ranma 1/2 series have leaked online. Needless to say, viewing these and not financially supporting the show disincentivizes more Ranma 1/2 being made. This is a tremendous loss to MAPPA for their hard work.
That time in 1983 when Shonen Jump covered Comiket & acknowledged Lum's overwhelming popularity in its pages. (Shonen Jump 1983

February 11th is the 40th anniversary of one of the most celebrated films in Japanese animation of all time, Beautiful Dreamer, written and directed by Mamoru Oshii.
"It's true that with Ranma I was conscious of him being the hero of a shonen manga, but he also transforms into a girl, so he's more of a curveball character. So, in that sense, you could say that Inuyasha was the first shonen manga hero that I took seriously." -Rumiko Takahashi
Is Rumiko Takahashi a shojo artist? No. But she has worked for shojo magazines a few times over the course of her career. Perhaps her best known shojo work is Slim Kannon (known as The Diet Goddess in English). It is the only collected shojo story in 1/5

We wanted to share a great new interview below with Kappei Yamaguchi (Ranma) and Noriko Hidaka (Akane) that we've translated.

"I'm a woman, so it's easier to draw from the heroine's point of view, otherwise, it's quite difficult to get the reader's sympathy for a "hero with unusual powers". So, as someone who has the same point of view as the reader, I have the heroine play the role of the navigator."
It’s happening! In today’s Shonen Jump 2023 Vol 1 One Piece author Eiichiro Oda commented: “I met Rumiko Takahashi sensei for the first time!! She is young in so many ways. I met a legend!!” #尾田栄一郎 #高橋留美子
"I wasn’t thinking about a second main heroine at all, actually. But when I put her in the story, she left such a good impression it seemed a shame to treat her as only a guest character. It would have felt a waste." -Rumiko Takahashi on Shampoo
"When drawing Inuyasha, I didn't have any grand themes in mind, but I did decide on some rules for myself. I'm a little embarrassed to mention it, but I tried to remember that love is important, and bonds are important, no matter what chapter I was drawing." -Rumiko Takahashi
A curiosity we've noticed. Even though their manga are published by Shogakukan, their 90s anime were all produced by Kitty and illustrations like this exist, Rumiko Takahashi & Naoki Urasawa have never publicly interacted with one another. They've even shared an editor.
