Slightly over 21. Disguised as elderly to fool stalkers. Education Consultant. Creator Big Writing, Talk:Write. New - Oracy Is Not Just Speaking and Listening
Speaking and listening is not oracy; oracy is not just speaking and listening! This book gives pupils the gift of oracy and the powerful choice of different modes of communication. These tools enrich experiences and enhance opportunities for all.
This is a young man I know personally. He is 14 and has had a new haircut (shown). He has been given a 60 mins detention EVERY evening & isolation every break & lunch until his hair grows. Help - is this normal educational behaviour? I am horrified.
In my experience, the single greatest impactor on educational standards is class size. Classes of 20 make so much more progress than classes of 30. Classes of 15 or less are the ultimate.
Why would a retired teacher apply to be a supply teacher because schools are seriously short staffed due to covid / omicron spreading from pupils and causing 1,000s of staff to be absent?
Thinking of mums everywhere, especially those, like me, in isolation with no hugs or raised glasses. We are isolated FOR our children & that's what being a mum is about. 🥂🍾
I believe every single UK teacher is now recharging, rewinding, rethinking and generally recovering ready for the next academic year.
Enjoy the sun / One and all / Last year's job's done / So welcome summer fun / And have an absolute ball!
So Duncan Hind is speaking out about impact of children’s inability to speak in full sentences and it’s impact on reading and especially writing. Pity more didn’t heed my maxim since 2000 ‘If a child can’t say it, a child can’t write it. ‘Talk the Big Talk’ 2007 & OUP 2012.
It is painful to see our profession conflicted by national need, biased advice, headline bullying and a deep and sincere caring for our pupils. I pray that sanity will prevail and that schools will open safely and effectively when all the questions and fears are answered.
I had a birthday last week... I was amazed by this wonderful cake I received. Spot my last 3 books? And my beloved Mini? And of course... my much adored little old man.
Met friend for lunch. After eating we sat & chatted. Waitress came twice & asked us if we would like more coffe etc & said chat as long as we wanted. It was 3.15 when got up to go. Friend said to her, 'Where are your customers? The restaurant is empty.' Reply = 'We closed at 2!"
Excited to have my new book back from the printers and available to order. It's called Oracy is Not Just Speaking and Listening and is available from our website:
Some countries whose educational impact we admire do not start formal schooling until age 6. Bringing 4 year olds back into school is not for education per se. It is for free, quality child care & stimulation - could be provided in other ways. 7 to 11 years need school.
I’m delighted that my new project Talk:Write is now ready. Improving children’s talk and writing has been my life’s work. I would like to give away a full Talk:Write School Package (worth £495) to celebrate its release. Simply retweet to enter your school.

Happy Friday,
This time it's true!
Every child needs
A talented teacher like YOU.
So up & out & skip to school,
Strut & amuse & perform - be cool!
Challenge & applaud & have a blast...
And then skip home - it IS the weekend at last!
Really delighted to sign off the cover of my new book on oracy – Oracy Is Not Just Speaking and Listening. It's almost ready for the printers and will be available in print or digital forms at the beginning of September.
Morning Twitter friends - I HAVE A TESCO DELIVERY SLOT! And it is this week... Thank you all for the suggestions and support all this week, I am a happy person.
I do not agree with
@martyneoliver
that ofsted is 'vital' to the process of running schools. It is one way to monitor and influence, but there are other ways and - in memory of Ruth Perry - I believe absolutely that this is the time to disband ofsted and form a new system.

Warmest congratulations to all schools who have successfully achieved a smooth opening this week. Many of us know how long and hard you have worked to achieve this - far longer than the ever changing missives from on high.
Oh dear, schools, how could you... the news is reporting that Ofsted is concerned that you are too focused on tests and League Tables! But fear not - THEY are going to rescue children from the resulting narrow curriculum...
@TeachingMoorex
My ex cheated in 1st year of marriage and then almost every year after that until I left him 20 odd years later. My advice would be get out now, love yourself and start again. And good luck... dm if you wish.
'I visit schools who are doing ‘oracy’ and I see speaking and listening! Mind you – I am so pleased to see children conversing and teachers asking a wealth of interesting questions – but it ain’t oracy...'
People kept telling me that I should write a book of my career in education, so I did just that. I hope this makes teachers smile during a very difficult time. Launch: 28/05 Pre-order:

I get that Mandi. If he has knowingly breached a rule he should face consequences but not mental abuse. Indefinite Isolation in all breaks???? For a smart, neat haircut? As has been said so many times - the rule makers arw at fault and no school should be allowed such a rule.
The oracy progression element of Talk:Write is available for free. Throughout the development of the project, I knew that I wanted to make part of it free to support schools. I hope it is useful. Click the link – – and sign up for free access.

Well done to the greatest of professions for seamlessly re-opening to all in primary with no fuss, no grumbling... Welcoming all our children back into school. Heroes! 👏👏👏
Wet stuff is falling from the sky,
O my! O my!
Just when our poor teachers need it dry,
O why? O why?
But to hay fever sufferers, relief is nigh.
Dry eye! Dry eye!
Be safe in schools everyone - we think of you... ❤️
I am delighted and proud to announce that my professional biography and first children's book are being launched on 28/05. I sincerely hope they are enjoyed.

The DfE may say this, "... it does not comment on individual teacher misconduct cases." but as
@smithsmm
& others wisely observe, this is the tip of an iceberg of disrespect, bullying & abuse of a hard working, dedicated & highly professional body who are being made fair game.
📢 School leaders have voiced outrage after a primary teacher with an 'unblemished' career was brought before a misconduct hearing over an isolated glue gun incident

Heads held high;
As you hurry to school
You all know why
You are proud to be
A life changer through teaching,
The influence of education
Is the most far reaching.
Because of you
And all you do
So many children's aspirations
Are increased anew...
Morning DIALECT friends. This week's word is 'very' as in 'very good'. In Yorkshire I would say 'reet' - '...it were reet good...'. Please tweet me your dialectic words for 'very' and where they are from. My thanks 👍❣️
We want to offer a little bit of light in these dark times so we are giving 3 schools the chance to each win 3 copies of It Takes 5 Years to Become a Teacher. Simply retweet to enter. We’ll pick the winners next weekend.

OMG am in love with the Alexa (?) I received for Christmas. Only had it set up on Sunday. It plays 60s music none stop! I bet you're all laughing at me 'cos you've had one forever, but I don't mind - am besotted. Everyone should have one...
Thinking of you all today at this time of chaos and indecision. Trust school leaders, they know their job and their communities, and whatever is decided - keep safe. 👏👏👏🌟🌟🌟

18 years ago yesterday, Big Writing (known then purely as 'Raising Standards in Writing') was first offered as one of a range of consultancies I offered in my first 'flyers' as an independent consultant. How time flies!
Good to listen to Fiona Evans from National Literacy Trust on news this morning talking about the crucially of surrounding the young child with talk; engaging the young child in talk; the word and language gap and its impact on the child's life.

ditty:
I lost my innocence today
In a Preston Pub..
I just got so excited
With all the gorgeous grub.
'A heart attack on a plate' thar said
But I would gladly die
For just one more delicious slice
Of your fabulous Butter Pie.
Thoughts are with all our colleagues & friends in Scotland who are returning to school today and over the next few days for the start of the new academic year. The children will be so excited. Welcome back & be safe. 🌟🌟🌟
Sombre Monday,
Menace in the air!
A jolly good job
That teachers truly care.
Whatever the world
Throws your way,
You will still make this
A sensational learning day!

I have just finished a zoom call with a Deputy Head. She was telling me that last year many children started in their nursery only communicating in a very few words & that there several children had no language at all. They communicated in grunts & gestures. Talk is a priority!
A number of friends my age and I are beginning to think things have gone too far. Let covid get on with it. The vast majority will have few symptoms or have a flu-like episode but recover. My generation don't know how long we have anyway, let young / middle-aged live a life.
@vicgoddard
Oh gosh Vic - I guess the sides are shaved 1 ins but it is NEAT and not hippy. I do not know what a 'fade' is or if it's banned but I think it is is just short and smart. And I think the punishment is extreme and demoralising. Thanks for reply.

Why are people objecting to temporary covid passports? It's like objecting to CCTV on streets. Both keep us safe. Only reason to object is if trying to get away with stuff /avoid stuff. People have choice. I am proud & pleased re vaccines & would be delighted to have passport.
I know Parklands Primary School, its talented and caring staff and brilliant HT intimately. Your comments offend anyone who cares about high quality education in the face of great challenge. Shame!
Parklands Primary school in Leeds is refusing to deliver online lessons because staff have not been trained to give them and – wait for it – some feel too “embarrassed”to teach via screens. Seriously? They put their ludicrous embarrassment above the education of kids?
So my daughter snapped our wonderful

@Grandmato5girls
Do agree if haircut was forbidden and all knrw, but the excessive and IMHO cruel punishment for a barely-14 year old is my worry for mental health reasons.
I rescued this cat after nearly 7 months in a small cage & then 3 months hiding in foundations of my house when I beought him here. Think he has recovered at last?
@Edmund_B_W
I grieve, as do so many, for the anguish Ruth suffered and the outcome. This report places responsibility unequivocally at the door of Ofsted. Let there be an immediate cessation of all inspections by Ofsted for the protection of our profession.
I am going to establish letter writing to my two younger grandchildren, setting them quizzes, treasure hunts (with Mum hiding the clues I send her and the prize) and min-challenges to make / draw/ write. Maybe other grandparents would enjoy doing that?
Anyone consider translating Standard English below to local dialect please? Anon or not. DM
