I don't often talk about living in homeless shelters or a group home because they're not my favorite memories to relive. However I decided to present about it because knowing stories helps educators better empathize.

This has been around a while but I love this visual representation of the Pythagorean Theorem that emphasizes the area (or volume) of the squares outside the triangle and not just the length of the triangle's sides.

Here's my 3 sentence blog post:
1) Word problems do not exist in real life outside of school.
2) We teach students strategies for solving word problems like Three reads and CUBES.
3) Students will never use strategies like Three reads or CUBES in real life outside of school.
I'm so tired of how much time we spend teaching math that few will ever use during their entire life, just in case a small percentage of us might need it.
Like I've used almost nothing I learned in Geo, Alg 2, PreCalc, and Calc but I need statistics and other math all the time.

Are schools having conversations about how we will only be able to cover about 1/3 to 1/5 as much content online as we might in person (and proactively addressing it)? If everything takes 3 to 5 times as much time to teach online, then this is something we need to talk about.
I'm a big fan of numberless word problems because they force students to think rather than mindlessly compute.

I've been a math educator since 2003 and Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics by

has more potential to improve the way we teach mathematics than any other book I have ever read.
I wrote a blog post to share why we should all read it:
I spent most of my high school years living in a group home. I usually try to avoid talking about it, but I realize that I have a perspective that might be helpful for other educators. So, here's what I wish teachers knew:

I love this article from Steven C. Reinhart about teacher moves in the math classroom that help get kids doing more of the communicating (instead of the teacher).
I wonder why we rarely hear about schools pushing students to accelerate through ELA. Schools proudly talk about a pathway to allow kids to take 3 years of math in 2 years... but rarely the same with ELA. How'd we got to a place where one option seems silly and the other great?
Here's my centering question for defeating impostor syndrome: "Will what I'm doing help another person?" If the answer's yes, then I tell my impostor syndrome to shut up because even if there are people who are better than me or know more, helping someone else still matters.

I'm loving this fascinating blend between English and mathematics. Here are the results of how likely an event is based on when each of these words/phrases are used based on what 956 US adults said.

Today I learned that there's a pre-pre-SAT called the PSAT 8/9.
So you're telling me that kids struggled with the SAT so they created the pre-SAT. Then they still struggled with the pre-SAT and so now we have the pre-pre-SAT for 8th and 9th graders?!
This is ridiculous.
I'm two chapters into

book and I'm very impressed. He's broken down everything that happens in math classes into 14 categories and then rigorously tested out strategies that may improve our results.
It's both fascinating and very readable.

I don't know if I'm proud or upset. My son made a long video of him looking at the screen, turned it into a gif, and is using that as his virtual background. So now it legit looks like he's paying attention and interacting even if he's not in the room.

Has anyone ever used the formula for the volume of a square pyramid in real life? The percentage of the population that has actually used that HAS to be less than 0.000001%... and that might be waaaay too high of an estimate. There are so many standards I wish I could get rid of.
