@thehistoryguy
I asked a Year one class what is the difference between me and Florence Nightingale (pointing to me dressed in theatre scrubs and Florence in a crinoline dress) and one boy said:
“she’s dead and you are alive”
Never a truer word said.
Delighted and honoured to be taking on the role of Editor in Chief for the Journal of Perioperative Practice in the New Year

Progressing safer surgery for patients and perioperative practitioners alike
It’s official. Proud to announce I have been appointed as one of two Associate Editors of The Journal of Perioperative Practice

I might be biased but the staff

Our first year April cohort of

What about the non-medical staff? Let’s promote the work of ODPs, theatre nurses, HCAs, ATPs and orderlies. All contribute to safe patient care. Surgeons and anaesthetist couldn’t operate without them.
If you are an ODP/RN and would like to undertake some work for us at Birmingham city university in 2024 at either our Birmingham or South West (Exeter) campus we have some

At last - a few mentions of ODPs
@DezitaODP9
@hannahvabbott
@cob1978
I’ve worked with some great ODPs. Still do. They are an essential member of the theatre team and in education too.
12 months later than planned and more than three years in the planning but finally it’s here: “The list of contributors reads like a who's who within the world of perioperative education…”

It’s been exactly 30 years to this week when I started my nurse training at Dudley & Stourbridge School of Nursing

Where is everyone now I wonder?
In response to Adrian’s tweet Sarah this is not the view of most

board members and SIG leads.

are key members of any theatre team and I am honoured to have worked with so many dedicated

in practice and education too.
@SaferSurgeryUK
Is this really the view of AFPP?
ODPs are the only profession with skills on qualification to work across Periop Care, ALL others need further training.
Such a blast from the past this morning. The 245 that used to run between Walsall through Wednesbury, Tipton, Dudley on to Stourbridge. Replaced by the 11A now.

So proud of my daughter

for stopping and doing first aid at a low speed RTA last night. She is not first aid trained but said she took the girl’s pulse and checked resps and pupil response but she only knew what to do “because of you, Mom”

@GeorgePointon_
A friend’s son’s teacher once asked him if he could come into school and give a talk on his job (he was a school cook) and he was like okay if you’re sure and then she added “and could you bring your fire engine too?” 🚒 🤣
A colleague shared with me yesterday that
@ODPBCU
is the best team she has EVER worked with and it’s made my week. This team strives to provide and facilitate the best learning experience to benefit learners but also to staff.
A student said to me yesterday that she really enjoyed my session on what to expect in urology surgery. It’s the little things as a lecturer that makes me love my job.
Looking for a new job in the New Year? We have some lecturer/senior lecturer vacancies for ODP and Paramedic Science to join our growing team. Check out the details below. DM me for more information. Julie.

This week is
#NationalApprenticeshipWeek
The ODP Degree Apprenticeship was approved in 2018 with the first ODP Apprentices commencing their courses in 2019.
Currently 16 HEIs offer the ODP Degree Apprenticeship. Details of these providers can be found at:
Only a week away now. Looking forward to meeting academics, clinical educators, mentors, SFAs and students to discuss best practice and the challenges of SFA education. Provides opportunity for much needed network too.
Looking for a new job in 2024? Want to teach the future ODP workforce? We have a FT (or may consider PT) opening for a senior/lecturer dependent upon experience/quals for Operating Department Practice. You will be joining a great team -I might be biased 🤣
Probably more adverse events from mistaken identities than cross contamination? The use of hats to identify who’s who in theatre, prevent confusion and increase patient safety c/o
@patientsafe3
Interesting to see that most retained instruments and swabs are not due to competence of the scrub nurse or
#ODP
in performing their count. Instead lack of communication, doctor competence, unknown equipment and not following procedures increases risk.
News update:
The latest report from the NHS regarding learning from surgical Never Events has been published. The findings presented in the report will support providers to improve patient safety.
