currently obsessed with ARGs (alternate reality games). these games result in players collaborating virtually and in the real world across a variety of formats. they're fascinating bc they create serendipity among strangers that doesn't occur normally outside of video games 1/?
Stripe shirt, Airbnb backpack, Dropbox hat - corporate shill. Juicero shirt, a Theranos backpack, and a WeWork hat - intriguing man of mystery. Who’s selling swag from startups who have catastrophically failed? That’s the shit that I want
This is a 100% serious offer -
@SoundCloud
i will literally work for free after hours to add a queue button to your mobile app. Literally no charge, please just let me add the basic functionalities that we all expect of a music playback app in 2021
Excited to announce that I'm moving to NYC in the fall and opening up a Rippling NYC office 🥳🥳 If you're in ny in September onwards, I'd love to hang out + if you know any engineers in New York interested in fintech and maybe looking for a new opportunity, please get in touch!
Spotify's APIs are actually really great! Built an app in about 2 hours today that allows my roommate to turn my volume down in case I'm being too loud - I feel like there's going to some much more innovative stuff built on their platform soon and I can't wait :)
excited to share what I’ve been working on: Rippling Spend Management (cards, expenses, bill pay). What we’ve built gives people unparalleled control and visibility into *all* of their spend - will write more soon but so proud of the product & the team 🥹
my most controversial opinion is day drinking is trash. mimosas with brunch is good for about 30 minutes and then ruins the entire rest of your day, the only redeeming factor is you’re essentially forced into a massive afternoon nap
(1/9) A year ago, I started building
@ontrestle
- a great company intranet to help you understand who knows what at your company. A few weeks ago, I made the painful decision to spin it down. Thread 👇 on why and the mistakes I made and lessons learned
1/ Unfortunately, I recently decided to spin down Comradery 😰 I'll probably write a longer thing on why + lessons learned in the future but tl;dr a lack of distribution plus the COVID crisis impacted the company greatly
Excited to announce I’m spinning up a team to build a new fintech product from the ground up at Rippling! It’s crazy ambitious and honestly I’ve never been more excited 🤩 I’m hiring engineers so hmu if you or anyone you know might be interested
The view from the newly opened
@Rippling
NYC office 🤩🥳
I’m hiring engineers to work on our first fintech product so hit me up if you want to work from here! (Rippling is also hiring for a bunch of roles across the board)
Hello internet people who are awake 👋 fun news: I've just launched the thing I've been working on for the past few months! I'm gonna write a longer thing in the morning but if you wanna check it out and perhaps give it an upvote I would appreciate it!
gm friends. i've made an nft game, let's play
100x100 grid of emojis
🔑 If u own the nft of a spot, u can change the emoji that goes there
🌱 Free (+gas) to mint an nft of any unclaimed spot
🎨 nft art will update when any neighboring emoji changes
Pre-seed fund idea: do all the admin work for your cos. Set up the C Corp, get 83b signed/filed, do 1st year accounting and taxes, just take all of the paperwork off founders hands when they’re starting out and have the least time to do all of that. Such a good unique value add
In Barcelona there’s a bar called Wall St w/ screens with the drink prices and when anyone bought a drink the price went up + occasionally they’d call a crash & the drinks would reset to $3 - are there any other fun/interactive bar concepts like this? (Bonus if they’re in nyc)
we just opened a new nyc office at 4 WTC! So in honor of that, started at the bottom (wework day passes, 2021) and now we’re here (60th floor, 2024) 🥳🥳
I tend to agree with
@reidhoffman
’s “If you’re not embarrassed by the first version of your product, you launched too late” but I’ve learned that you should be embarrassed by how little your first version can do, not how shit is - reduce scope, not quality
@Bfaviero
i sort of have the opposite reaction - the major piece of this that everyone makes fun of is point 1, no average person could figure out how to do all of that which is why Dropbox won. Setting up a crypto wallet today and using it today is the equivalent to point 1 tho 😬
I didn't personally work on this, but we (
@rippling
) just launched something pretty crazy - workflows connected to both employee records and third party apps are game changing
1/ longer announcement: Very excited to share with you all what I've been working on for the past few months - it's called Comradery () and it's an online platform built for ✨ communities ✨ What are we building and why? 🧵 below!
I’m ashamed to admit that even though I worked for
@stripe
two years ago, I’ve never actually processed a real live payment using them... until today!!!! 📈😍
@BillyMcFarlend
tbh I left Stripe to start my own company and I had a ton of fun, learned a lot, met tons of amazing people so although it hurts financially, I don't regret it much 🤷♂️ Also really liking my new gig at Rippling and I think/hope they'll end up doing well :)
i’m so fucking dumb… i moved into a new apartment… didn’t have a measuring tape so bought a bunch of furniture by “just eyeballing” it… i now have a 10’x7’ rug for my 1br living room in nyc, it literally can’t unroll all the way and takes up the entire floor 😭😭😭
there should be a number next to everyone's name in slack with how many unread messages + emails they have so you basically get an approximate wait time
4/ This won't be the end of my founder journey but for now, I'll be joining
@Rippling
at the end of this month - I'm a huge fan of what
@parkerconrad
and the rest of the team there has built and I'm extremely excited to be a part of their next chapter 😃
Exciting news: We just raised a $250M Series C at a $6.5B valuation. We’re grateful for our investors, partners, customers, and most importantly all of the talented folks here at Rippling 🌟. Read our announcement here:
the fred again crowd in nyc on a sunday night is truly something else (this is outside the venue after the concert, fred agains not even here lmao, some guys just blasting it)
Super proud to announce the latest addition to our finance suite 🥳 The team worked super hard on this one, and this is just the first of many big announcements we have planned for this year :)
Say goodbye to billing woes and hello to Rippling Bill Pay 👋 Meet the newest member of our Finance suite!
💰 Instantly create bills
📆 Schedule payments and set other automations
🌎 Easily pay vendors around the world
💲 Manage your spend in one place
For the past few years (tho there have been bumps) I occasionally catch myself thinking “this is it, this is the peak, things cannot possibly get better than how they are now.” I’m happy to report that I have yet again proven myself wrong, so fucking happy/grateful/excited 🥳🥳🥰
I'm never going to flake on an irl invitation again. Seriously as soon as this is over, I'm down for literally anything - your cousin's bar mitzvah? I'll be there an hour earlier to help you setup, just let me hang out with other humans physically 😭
I’m a huge fan of YC and think it helped a lot in my founder journey, very thankful to them, etc but for ppl who are rejected this time around - remember that the end goal isn’t YC, it’s building a successful company!!! Please keep building and shipping 🚢
Could easily see a great use of the API being an integration with say Rippling that automatically allocates a card when an employee joins, and changes their limit when they switch teams, roles, are on a corporate trip, etc. Excited for the possibilities this opens up :) (4/4)
i believe in ai way more than crypto but working in crypto seems more fun? everyone’s on the same team saying gm to each other. in ai, people on your own team are telling you you’re going to cause the extinction of humanity lol
sorry to get mushy but every year on my birthday i write a letter to myself that arrives a year later - finally got around to reading last year's letter and 🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹 i love my life and everyone in it so much (and moving was the best fucking decision i ever made)
I've also been tracking my statistics with (primarily) online dating! It was a long slog but I'm happily married now 🥰 and just wanted to share my journey - if I can do it, you can too!!
@ontrestle
(5/9) Secondly, it's brutal being a solo founder. Juggling building product, sales, investors, legal stuff, design, and managing your emotional state is pretty overwhelming. The amount of context switching also kills a lot of your momentum which is critical in the early days
One of the biggest challenges with our card product was designing a system that could approve/reject a transaction in less than a couple seconds - checking for fraud, customer rules, + more. My coworker Sam wrote about how we tackled this, take a look :)
@ontrestle
(9/9) As for what's next for me - I'm excited to get back to work building something new! I'm exploring a few ideas that interest me (another thread coming soon on one area that really excites me - communities!). And who knows? Maybe I'll revisit this problem someday :)
a great piece of advice i heard is whenever u experience something amazing, say “if this isn’t nice, i don’t know what is.” i whisper it to myself during sunsets, listening to a great concert, hanging out with amazing people + more and it’s such a good reminder to be grateful 🥰
i went to this tea shop & the owner taught me a ton about tea - steeping, timing, temperature, etc.
so then i go to a candle shop & start asking about best practices for candles & the guy is like "you just pick one that smells good & then you light it on fire it's not hard" 😭😭
2/ I do want to say thank you so much from the bottom of my heart to every single person who's been following and supporting me on this journey. I got this far and learnt this much thanks to your support and encouragement!
Hoping to make WFH a little more sane with - Connect your Spotify account and get a unique link to share with your roommates so they can lower your volume if you're being too loud!
Spotify's APIs are actually really great! Built an app in about 2 hours today that allows my roommate to turn my volume down in case I'm being too loud - I feel like there's going to some much more innovative stuff built on their platform soon and I can't wait :)
@davidu
👋 Currently working on this :) I used to work at Stripe, so inspired by that!
I’d love to chat if you have the time and hear more of your thoughts on this space!
Sometimes when integrating with an external API, a callback URL will be required (such as during an authorization flow). This is annoying when developing locally as localhost is often not allowed so I made - it's an https url that'll redirect to localhost
also just realized how much crazy talent
@linear
has picked up (recently?).
@cjc
@julianlehr
and
@alexcornell
all in the same place is crazy (plus ofc the founders seem exceptionally talented as well)
You’re right venmo, if I want to charge 2 people for concert tickets I bought, I should have to add the numbers up myself and charge myself money as well, that’s totally reasonable
I swear to god, no one in nyc has a job on the first sunny Friday of the year (for rippling people: i am, of course, still working diligently even under the harsh and brutal heat)
Pro tip: $x/year for each domain adds up. I finally added up how much I’ve been spending for domains for projects I’ll one day totally get to I promise and it turns out they cost over $1000/yr total 😰
I want to build my new thing, Comradery, more out in the open so I'm recording some vlogs documenting the process! Here's the 1st one, talking about communities and why I decided to build this! (my face will be further from the camera in future ones 😅)
i think people who are not lactose intolerant need to understand it’s more of a sliding scale - lattes w real milk is a no go, pizza is a sober no but a drunk yes, and whipped cream on hot chocolate is a requirement as always
3/ Overall, while this obviously wasn't the outcome that I wanted, I'm doing pretty ok! It was definitely pretty rough when I first came to terms with this a couple weeks ago - but in the end, I'm extremely glad I tried and I'm proud of what I built
went scuba diving for the first time and wow - sure there’s the beauty of nature and the fishes, etc but the biggest thing is it forces you to pay attention and do pretty intense breath work for a couple hours but in a very entertaining way, afterwards I felt incredibly zen
I shut down the heroku dyno of a side project i made a couple years ago because i thought no one was using it and someone immediately dmed me asking what happened 🥺🥺
i feel i've seriously underrated bananas:
- 0 prep time
- 0 cook time
- tasty
- it's a fruit so probably healthy
- portable
- no plate required, protective covering built in
- if a mad max scenario breaks out, mario kart has taught me that peels will be in high demand
@ontrestle
(6/9) Thirdly, never rewrite your product. I thought if I could rewrite everything in React Native (including web), I would get a mobile app and be able to write once, run anywhere, The rewrite took months, killed momentum, and the unified codebase didn't help future dev work
