Although piriformis feels tight, it's mostly underperforming. Stretching and releasing muscles feels good, but doesn't change what ur 🧠 perceives. Ur brain is hardwired to protect w/ tightness. Until brain recognizes stability, muscles will b tight.

@tferriss Tim's had chronic and, at times acute back pain. So, bfore u swing a kettlebell, revisit physics. In other words, u have mass at end of a lever (ur arms). Meanwhile, ur brain's finding a workaround 4 every pain and injury u've experienced, i.e., compensation (that's cumulative).

I have second-layer knowledge to recognize this: 99% of practitioners working with musculoskeletal system don't increase stability. Instead, they increase mobility by stretching and releasing muscles. They also promote exercises that increase compensation (that's cumulative).

Foam rolling doesn't allow for more mobility without stability. Releasing muscles with deep tissue massage allows for an increase in mobility over short-term, but it's not capable of increasing stability. Thus, the results don't hold. #runchat #mobility

MOST approaches to pain and injury r thought to b right fit for everyone. But they r not specific to anyone. This applies to #orthotics and manual therapy that don't increase stability. It also applies to #exercise involving repetitive motion at joints avoiding certain positions.

@Itsjustbeej @PatriciaIrigo10 To save time and frustration, it's worth knowing the piriformis is rarely tight. In *most* cases, it's underperforming and not providing stability. Attempting to stretch or release muscles that r not tight increases instability (and tightness). That's reason for vicious circle.

It isn't uncommon to hear someone say, Calf stretches and orthotics ‘help’ with #plantarfasciitis . What they aren't aware of is that because of instability, the timing at which joints absorb shock isn't any better than when pain was at its worst. #runchat

Most conventional running shoes have an extreme upward curve (a.ka., toe spring). Curvature forces joints throughout ur toes to absorb shock in ways that r far from optimal. Toe spring also places muscles at a disadvantage for generating tension. #RunChat

@Dries_Health There are a lot of factors, including luck. If exercises require movement, they're increasing compensation. Without seeing ur r.o.m., I can tell u that u're compensating. If u weren't, u wouldn't have an IT band issue. What was ur most recent shoe? And do u have a new shoe?
