That Peter Leithart's two-volume commentary on Revelation is not on this list is a crime. It is phenomenal. Can't stop reading. Easily the best modern commentary I've ever read. It is attuned to everything: Theology, liturgy, lexicology, history, etc.

I have it on good authority that a fifth volume of Muller's PRRD is currently being written. It will cover Reformed philosophy - metaphysics and natural theology. The first four volumes are also being edited and updated and should see a new edition with the fifth volume.

Actually, Megan, the Pharisees were the ones following God’s law to a tee. They were the strictest of the law followers. What they weren’t doing is loving their neighbors. This was Jesus saying “calling ‘Lord, Lord’ means nothing if you don’t love.”

Lot of evangelicals (including Reformed) who got a "proper seminary education" were making bad Trinitarian mistakes during the latter part of the 20th c. into the 2000's before folk starting calling it out. Seminaries were teaching this stuff--that's where it came from.

I'm editing a new @DavenantInst critical edition of Davenant's *De Morte Christi,* where he argues for his view on the extent of Christ's atoning work. It is the longest scholastic treatment by a Reformed theologian in the early modern period. Chapter 1. Done.

“Well done, good and faithful servant” does not/will not mean: well done, for simply receiving Christ’s imputed righteousness. Run the race to win the crown doesn’t mean (at least primarily, to be generous) Christ ran the race himself and therefore you will receive the crown.

@gavinortlund You won't. There was even division among the medievals about which ones were instituted by Christ (and which ones weren't) and whether the sacraments need to be instituted by Christ to be a sacrament.

The most overlooked aspect of the Protestant Reformation: No papal ecclesiastical or civil jurisdiction. Give that jurisdiction to the civil magistrate. Most modern Protestants either ignore this or chalk it up to power-hungry magistrates.

If I had complete control of a seminary, I'd make all students read Aristotle's Metaphysics, not because I think it's the best (it isn't), but because it is essential to make sense of early modern theology and philosophy. I'd prefer Suarez, but it isn't (generally) anglicized.

It wasn't until my PhD program that I actually received a thorough acquaintance with classic metaphysics, epistemology, etc. All my degrees are from Christian schools and were in theology and Bible. I can resonate with Dr. Mathison's own education. Seminaries can do much better.

TBF to Grudem's ST, since everyone seems to be dunking on it. 1) There weren't a lot of easily accessible STs (from a Calvinistic perspective) available. No Bavinck RD in English. No Horton. Hodge has a whole bunch of untranslated bits. 2) Every evangelical was messing with DoG

Some random observations about the excellent @gavinortlund video on veneration of icons and the surrounding conversation. 1. People continue to shift the goal posts. The question both historically and theologically is the practice and legitimacy of the *cultic* use of icons.

My wife is one of the hardest working people I know. She takes care of 5 children, attempts to keep our house in order, fixes all sorts of things in the house, helps me keep my crazy schedule, tends a garden, etc. This may or may not be compelling, but she *is* a suitable helper

The biggest problem facing the evangelical "complementarian" gender theology is its inability to articulate a compelling role for women apart from wife and mother. Unsurprisingly, this is unappealing to women with talents and inclinations beyond that, or who are single.

We need a new edition of Charles Hodge's ST. I once believed that it was probably overrated, but now having read extensive portions of it, I've changed my mind. I've also realized that most people cannot profit from it the way they ought b/c of all the foreign language bits.

Humanities degrees, including seminary degrees, should be more tutor-based where reading and rhetorical exercises are primary. This should be supplemented by lectures. Seminaries should especially emphasize the rhetorical exercises, such as disputations.

Having spent a month with Jonathan Edwards and his covenant theology, I have to say that I find it remarkably clear and coherent in relation to other Post-Reformation theologians. I still prefer Baxter's model, but Edwards is extremely insightful on the intra-Reformed debates.
