Since September 2023, Somaliland's defense has largely fallen to an armed civilian population. The open border with Somalia has become a gateway for weapons and militias to enter, further jeopardizing the nation's security. This isn’t just an administrative failure—it’s a #betrayal of the trust and sacrifices of the people of Somaliland. The situation has grown so dire that the government has effectively retreated to Hargeisa, abandoning its responsibility to protect the nation's borders and internal security. It has become disturbingly normalized for civilians to take on the duty of defense, all while paying taxes without any clarity about how those funds are used. Meanwhile, the dismantling of a key constitutional principle—a national army—seems to be accepted as the new norm. If Somaliland is to maintain any legitimacy as a state, we must fulfill the most basic duty of any government: protecting its people. The time for patriotic songs without action is over. We must demand accountability, reform, and the creation of a national army that is capable of defending Somaliland against external threats and maintaining internal peace. Without a strong, accountable military, the very foundation of Somaliland's statehood is in jeopardy. The people of Somaliland have shown incredible resilience, but their sacrifices cannot be in vain. The time for symbolic defense is past. It’s time for real action—action that builds a strong, professional, and accountable national army worthy of safeguarding the future of Somaliland.
#Somaliland, a nation that limits its national cause to a single day of patriotic songs and celebrations. In recent days, I’ve witnessed the leaders and intellectuals of Somaliland come together to congratulate each other on the founding day of the Somaliland National Army but here’s the pressing question: WHERE IS THE NATIONAL ARMY? It's been nearly 30 years since the establishment of the Somaliland military, and yet, the $180 million allocated to security in the national budget seems to have gone nowhere in building a true, effective defense force. A nation that prides itself on sovereignty and independence cannot afford to have an army that exists in name only. An army that is symbolic, lacking the strength, organization, and discipline necessary to defend our country. The failure to establish a capable military over three decades is not just a lapse in administration—it is a national security crisis that threatens the very existence of the state. Where is the Somaliland National Army after all these years of financial investment? The $180 million should have been used to create a well-trained, well-equipped, and professional military force—one that can defend our borders and maintain internal stability. Yet, we still lack a military that can fulfill this role. This discrepancy begs the question: where is the accountability for such a massive expenditure? Who is responsible for this failure, and why has there been no action taken? The people of Somaliland have the right to demand answers. They deserve more than vague reassurances and hollow promises. Our sovereignty cannot be left to chance, hope, or the goodwill of others. Without a functional, capable military, our national aspirations remain vulnerable, and the security of our nation is at risk

"For over 30 years, Republic of #Somaliland has been stuck in a political argument that leads nowhere. Pushing for de facto recognition instead of enforcing its de jure rights. This is the single biggest deadlock preventing Somaliland from reclaiming its rightful place in the international system. Somaliland is not an unrecognized new country – it is already recognized on June 26, 1960, as an independent, sovereign state." @somalilandmfa!
