@patrickc I’ve been thinking about this in relation to proofreading. Slower proofreaders catch every single thing, but the project takes longer and costs more. Maybe there’s a point at which a good-enough proofread is good enough. (Though it goes against my word nerdery to even say this.)

I’ve thought about this a lot—there are a ton of topics that are compelling in longer-than-essay form but don’t require more than ±100 pages. (There’s no shame in being able to write succinctly!) If you have ideas in this vein for @stripepress let me and @_TamaraWinter know!

Wish there was a market for ~100-page books. Too many books are too long to be an essay, but don't have 300-400 pages of substance.

Works in Progress is looking for a managing editor. If you're a sharp writer, an even sharper editor, meticulously organized, and insatiably curious, I encourage you to apply. You'll be working with some of the most brilliant people I know.

My writer-editor-friend David Wolinsky reported a very thoughtful oral history of a very dark time on the internet, and was kind enough to speak to me about it:

Bubbles are bigger than tulips or Beanie Babies. In Boom, @byrnehobart and @tobiasahuber show how bubbles have been an underrated driver of innovation—including in the Manhattan Project, the Apollo program, and the semiconductor industry. Preorder 💥

@_TamaraWinter @dwarkesh_sp @karpathy @nayafia @_brianpotter @salonium Could not agree more. At this point it seems intuitive that the media that will survive and endure (especially wrt AI) is media that speaks to a specific audience and community (with the exception of a small handful of exceptionally high-quality general-purpose media).
