This is so beautiful - I'd never seen this image that Cassini grabbed of Saturn's moon Enceladus, its water volcanoes gushing out the south pole against the brightly lit rings, and the small ring moon Pandora in the lower right. WOW.

So sad to have lost Mari Foroutan in the downed Ukrainian plane. She studied gravel ripples in Iran and compared them to Mars, with help from Jim Zimbelman, and we discussed this a little - I wish more. She was a bright light and will be missed.
One of the top five videos of my life...
I think you can hear me say "it's so beautiful it hurts". :)

Oh my gosh, look at all the volcanoes on Io!! From a dozen to dozens, when seeing with better and closer eyes. From the Juno spacecraft, orbiting Jupiter. By the amazing

I counted about 85 hotspots, active volcanic eruptions, in this new image of Io from
@NASAJuno
. 😮 And that's only half the body! I'm loving this high resolution!
Last month, Curiosity captured this image of a dust devil on Mars. :) I love being reminded that stuff is happening on the planets whether we're there to see it or not!

I'm gonna roll out a few of my favorite solar system images. I'll start with this incredible view of nitrogen glaciers moving through steep and rugged water ice mountains on distant Pluto. From the

The highlight of the new eruption in Iceland is a large, single vent with fountains hundreds of feet high! These pulses happen about every 15 minutes and feed the other flows. I'm so in love 😍 and it's so hard to walk away!
Your next dose of lava videos: This flow is so hot and fluid (coming from very deep) that it moves like water, making lava falls, rivers and pools! We had a strange desire to take a plunge...Taken this week at

Look how dark these materials are from asteroid Ryugu - they are carbon-rich and contain 15 different kinds of amino acids! Building blocks of life. From the Japanese Hayabusa 2 mission. Can't wait for OSIRIS-REx materials coming this fall!

Oh my gosh, it's Dragonfly!!!! A heliocopter for Titan just downselected by NASA from 12 to TWO missions for study, and I'm on the science team - here we go!!
"as I ran along, I remember ... saying to myself, 'You know, this is really the moon. We're really here. ... That's the Earth up there.' And I said it two or three times to myself." RIP, Alan Bean, Moon walker :(
How much pleasure is it to spend time looking at the volcanic calderas and lava flows of the Jupiter side of Io? The complexity of patterns, the richness of color and the "softness" of the

images are breathtaking.
At the Iceland volcano, there were these incredible overflowing, overturning circular lava ponds, consuming crust and expanding outwards - I've never seen anything like it! You can hear Laura getting her drone up to view one.

If you'd like to know more about the Dragonfly mission, the moon Titan, and the NASA program it's under, here is the press conference with great detailed interviews. I'm on the mission team, and am floored and elated!
Beautiful shot of the backshell and parachute from Mars Perseverance taken by the Ingenuity helicopter - with its shadow! Planetary flight continues to be awesome...
@NASAJPL
I've been next to a fair number of lava flows, but few this fast and exposed - it was so hot!! This was from an overflow of the big, perched channel fed by the vent fountains.

A father brought his high school-aged daughter to my office to encourage her towards a STEM career. Now she is graduating in geology with a BS and a 4.0, and has her pick of 7 or 8 PhD programs. Parenting matters!

Great tour today of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN - this smashes atoms and smaller bits into even smaller things predicted by physics but hard to see in nature. Amazing to celebrate the best of our technology - go science!

I was exploring this spectacular landscape a year ago - wind-carved ridges of the Argentine Puna high plateau (like on Mars!). Let's hope Laura Kerber and I can get back there in 2021!

Really stunned by the detail in rings of Saturn from Cassini close orbits - density waves, propellers from tiny moons, "straw" of material strewn between. Tiscareno

Beautiful picture of the far side of the Moon and Earth taken yesterday by the Chinese Longjiang-2 spacecraft. I'm totally unfamiliar with this part of the Moon! Received on Earth in the Netherlands
@radiotelescoop
I'm always impressed to see giant stratovolcano Mt. Rainier looming large across the airplane window - big glaciers almost to the bottom, jagged cliffs from repeated lava flows and landslides and erosion ❤
I study things that can cross roads - lava and dunes. I guess it's the excitement of rapid change! This scene today at the Salton Sea is gorgeously post apocalyptic.
My first time seeing the Deccan Traps! Famous outpouring of flood basalt at the top of a giant mantle plume 66my ago that covers much of India. Just climbing up from Mumbai.
This lava flow is so hot, it readily consumes its own crust! And why does it always make us think of some kind of yummy food...

Remember this iconic photo and the 1991 Mount Pinatubo eruption? Today I got to drive up the ash plain! It was broad and sandy and the tropical, green mountain loomed large.
I can remember kicking around this mission idea early on, bouncing along in a Land Cruiser on desert roads in Morocco with my buds. Now it's actually happening!!

With the announcement this week of a neat Antarctic meteorite find, I remembered this big baby - 47 lb MIL 05002! Joe Boesenberg and I stumbled on it in 2006 and made a bet as to whether it was a meteorite - I won. 😄

Got to visit the historic Mount Wilson Observatory above Los Angeles, where a century ago Hubble discovered the universe was expanding. Looked through the 100 inch, stayed in the astronomers quarters and sat in Einstein's chair!

Hirchel's notes on finding planet Uranus from his handmade telescope in Bath in 1781. And sketches of sunspots and Saturn's rings by Dominic Cassini in 1676 - I found both yesterday at The Royal Society in London!
Down by the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon is one of my favorite places on Earth. I've had to work hard to get there, I have many miles between me and any kind of car, and there is utter peace and calm among a riot of rocks and rapids. It fills me up!
Fun with freezing stuff here
@BYU
- acetone cobbles on the shore of a nitrogen lake! at -210 C (63 K), acetone is frozen, while nitrogen is comfortably liquid. Maybe a scene from a time gone by on Triton or Pluto?

The longest channels in the solar system are on Venus. But there's no water - are they from exotic lavas? Sulfur, carbonitite, komatiite... Tracy Gregg

SR-71 Blackbird flew high enough (80K ft) it could see downtown LA from over Tucson. And it *cruised* at over Mach 3. (from a church talk - I sat up and paid attention...)
We hiked to the green sand beach on Hawaii! It's all olivine, from picrite, or ultramafic, really deep and silica poor lavas from Mauna Loa, erupted explosively at the ocean.

Ok, now it's out in public I can tell the story - Jim Karner and I went looking for pieces of the Utah meteor that fell last week, and after walking 13 miles we came up empty. But we did run into collector Sonny Clary with this gorgeous find!
