Check this out! These are REAL photos, 4K res, from the Moon, looking back at our Earth.
21st century or not, just think about this view. Everyone you know or knew or will know is on that blue planet. And we're all in this one world, together.
BREAKING…Signal has just been received at mission control, New Horizons has successfully started its flyby program of stored commands and the exploration of Ultima Thule 4 billion miles away! THIS IS IT FOLKS, FLYBY HAS BEGUN! Go New Horizons!!

Today (!!) NASA's New Horizons mission crosses the 55 AU mile marker, making it 55x as far from the Sun as Earth. That's almost twice as far as Neptune's orbit, and half a billion miles beyond even the farthest reaches of Pluto's orbit.
Go New Horizons!
TALLY HO ULTIMA THULE!! An ancient relic of solar system formation, 4+ billion miles away, as dark as dirt, & shining only in the faint sunlight of the Kuiper Belt. Here it is, in a New Horizons imaging sequence. SEE IT MOVE, AGAINST THE STARS? TALLY HO! We'll be there on Monday!
THE STORY IS OUT!
I've been selected to be the first ever researcher to fly on a NASA-funded commercial suborbital space mission! See here: ...
Go NASA! Go Science!

Less than an hour ago New Horizons crossed the 50 AU marker it was designed to reach. Although four other missions reached this distance back in the 20th Century, none was in perfect health, but New Horizons is.

The LONG hibernation for New Horizons is ending! Yes, tonight we'll take our bird out of its almost 6-month long hibernation and into active ops to begin flyby preps for Ultima Thule at New Years day 2019! GO NEW HORIZONS!
#PlutoFlyby
JUST GOT WORD FROM THE KUIPER BELT, New Horizons sent a GREEN BEACON! All’s well way out there. And this was our last beacon until long after flyby when downlink finishes in 2020. We wake the bird up from hibernation to start flyby preps next week! GO NEW HORIZONS!
RIGHT THIS MINUTE, NASA’s
@NewHorizons2015
spacecraft is firing its engines out in the Kuiper Belt to home in on our next flyby target!! That target is an ancient world called Ultima Thule. This engine burn is the farthest ever made by any spacecraft. ULTIMA, HERE WE COME!
AS OF TODAY (!), New Horizons is just 1 Astronomical Unit (AU) to our next target, the KBO Ultima Thule (aka 2014 MU69)!
And we're homing in to be there and explore it on New Years Eve and New Years Day!
Mark your calendars and join us!
Today is the 13th
@NewHorizons2015
launch anniversary! In fact exactly now, our bird was just off its rocket on its way to Pluto and the Kuiper Belt. What a journey we have had!
PINCH ME! We’re less than 6 days from the flyby of
#UltimaThule
! Just half an hour ago it should have entered Encounter Mode, a state preventing anomalies from diverting off the flyby plan. Confirmation of that critical event comes this afternoon—from 4 billion miles away. 1/2
This JHU Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) place is hotting up with staff. Must be something about to happen. As i write these words the news is inbound from the Kuiper Belt at the speed of light, currently passing Saturn’s orbit.

Precisely 18 years ago TODAY, the
@NASANewHorizons
Horizons team was selected to build and fly the first mission to explore the Pluto system and the Kuiper Belt! ….I think we did OK!

Did you know?
@NewHorizons2015
is moving faster than both Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11 and will overtake them in about 2217 (at ~640 AU) and 2118 (at ~340 AU), respectively! (1 AU=The distance from the Earth to the Sun, 93 million miles)

to continue the exploration of the Kuiper Belt by its

spacecraft-- You did it!
IT'S HAPPENING! New Horizons has begun sending hazard search images of the space near Ultima Thule. Thru Dec 16th we will be making more & more detailed searches for hazardous moons/rings. If flying past Ultima at our planned 3,500 km range is dangerous, we'll flyby at 10,000 km.

Looky what same in my mail this weekend!
Almost 1000 pages of scientific goodness in a research compendium summarizing every aspect of what we learned from the
@NASA
#NewHorizons
flyby of the Pluto system. 25 beefy chapters and several appendices! 1/2
SO COOL--DID YOU KNOW THIS?
While
@NewHorizons2015
flies across, it is serving as an observatory, observing dozens of Kuiper Belt Objects-- small and large-- using its LORRI telescopic imager! Look at all these objects we're studying in ways you cannot from Earth!

!
Nerd moment: Go find the Moon tonight on the sky. Right next to it is Mars-- that reddish star right bu the moon. Look at Mars. That's where a NASA rover the size of a car just landed. Look at Mars tonight. think about that. No scifi. That's reality today. 🚀👍🇺🇸

Did you know?
@NewHorizons2015
is far beyond the distance that
@NASAVoyager
took its last photo & made its last course correction. That means every time we do either of those things we set a new distance record! Hail Voyager! Go New Horizons!

Today is the 88th anniversary of the discovery of Pluto by Clyde Tombaugh. I love this mash up 1930 image of Clyde (the year he discovered Pluto) with a New Horizons image of the planet. Happy Anniversary-- Enjoy!
EXACTLY 6 MONTHS FROM NOW-- New Horizons flies by Ultima Thule, on 1 Jan 2019! The most distant exploration of any object in history, and likely THE most alien thing ever explored. What will we find?
#PlutoFlyby
Seeing double 👀
On April 22 & 23, New Horizons will take images of two of the nearest stars, Proxima Centauri & Wolf 359. When combined w/Earth-based images, the result will be a record-setting parallax measurement. Here's how you can participate:
YEAH! Go Baby Go!
@NewHorizons2015
just reported in from the Kuiper Belt 4 billion (yeah— billion!) miles away: Engine burn SUCCESSFUL!! Perfect in fact! We’re right down the middle of the pike now for Ultima! Go New Horizons!
IIT’S OCTOBER 1ST AND WE’RE ALMOST THERE! Just 3 months from today
@NewHorizons2015
will flyby Ultima, maklng the most distant exploration of worlds in history!
The report is in from
@NewHorizons
in the Kuiper Belt: BURN SUCCESSFUL!! Right on the money in fact! Go New Horizons! We’re on course for Ultima Thule!
STOP— AND THINK!
The most distant exploration of worlds every attempted will occur just 7 weeks from TODAY when New Horizons explores the mysterious Kuiper Belt Object Ultima Thule on 1 Jan 2019!
What will we find to start the new year?
FIVE WEEKS FROM TODAY, New Horizons flies by Ultima Thule in the Kuiper Belt, and makes the most distant exploration of worlds in history!!
Be there on line with us! Retweets please!
Later today-- just over 100 hours to Ultima! The spacecraft has entered it's battle hardened :"Encounter Mode" and is already returning data about Ultima and its environment.
Enjoy this best wishes video to our team from rock star scientist and science author, David Grinspoon!
