hosting whatbeatsrock on Vercel for 1 wk cost $1200. after switching to Cloudflare pages, it now costs $20 (!!)
naturally, I took the amount saved and dumped it straight into Cloudflare stock 🫡 lfg

Identity-based social graphs are fundamentally limited. Your Facebook identity is a mere digital shadow of its physical counterpart, and little more.
I wrote about the future of social media, and opportunities in the post-identity web.
A 30% tax on a creator platform means individual creators get absolutely screwed. We’re moving into a world where in-app purchases are sometimes payments to creators, not the platform, and Apple needs to get with the times.

I cofounded
@fanhouseapp
8 months ago to empower creators to monetize their content. We pay creators 90% of earnings. Now, Apple is threatening to remove Fanhouse from the app store unless we give them 30% of creator earnings. This is theft and exploitation.
towards intelligence too cheap to meter:
15 cents per million input tokens, 60 cents per million output tokens, MMLU of 82%, and fast.
most importantly, we think people will really, really like using the new model.
literally how much would they have to pay him to leave one of the hottest ai companies? 50m a year? more? whats the incentive for him outside money? more access to compute?
Meet Mad Realities. we are building the first web3 interactive dating show that is community voted.
what does that mean? NFT holders will have a vote on the cast, who makes it to the finale, and what happens on dates each week.

Here’s why I think retentive AI companions will look more like games than Character AI or Replika, for better or worse:
Been using

the past few weeks to make Chrome bearable on my 2013 Macbook. The poor thing has enough trouble running Unity + Xcode + Rider as it is.
I worked on AR/VR for many years, including at Oculus and Google. After finally getting the Vision Pro, I've distilled three paths forward for spatial computers, in order of likelihood:
1. 🖥️ Display Revolution
2.👌 Interface Revolution
3.🧠 Input Revolution

Love that someone at Figma is thinking about this. This is the hidden joy of using
@FacebookHorizon
and other social VR. Technology has made it easier to consume together, but creation remains mostly out of sight.
it feels like many forms of socializing focus on consuming (dining out, art museums, watching movies, alcohol, music shows)
what are some forms of socializing that focus on creating instead?
one can still be rigorous about higher order needs like fun and entertainment. not all fun is durable. many NFT projects in their heyday looked like runaway hits with super engaged users, when in reality the need fulfilled was unsustainable speculation
I think most people are looking at consumer AI wrong.
They're focused on finding products that solve a problem or meet a clearly articulated need.
But when you look at runaway hits like Midjourney and Character AI, the "use case" is just people having fun.

In conclusion, Vision Pro is fantastically designed, but it's a few iterations away from even "boring" monitor replacement. Not as exciting as literal superpowers, but as
@localghost
put it, I prefer a world where builders keep building.
Although AR is often touted as a means of granting "superpowers," it will first become indispensable to those who don't have full access to ordinary healthy faculties. This includes both lasting (elderly/disabled) and temporary (parent with full hands).
Regardless of what Apple does, the main trend to watch here is the intersection of 1) sandbox social games like
@GorillaTagVR
and
@throwbackvr
, and 2) teens.

has a great post about this:
Social is VR's killer app
Similar to how social was the killer app of previous computing platforms, we believe social is the killer app of ARVR.

An underexplored direction from working on Horizon was co-creation. There are many ways to socially consume things, but social creative activities are harder to put together without the help of technology.

2/ While NFTs have exploded in popularity in past few years, we believe it’s just the beginning.
Despite the programmability and composability of NFTs, the vast majority of NFT collections are mere static images that act as fancy key cards into gated communities.

Wallet-native communication is inevitable and its superpower is data. Wallet-native messaging combined with accessible web3 data will lead to trust, better UX and more authentic relationships.

Nietzsche's Guide to Greatness | Great Books Lecture
On the Genealogy of Morality is one of Nietzsche's most important books, written to cultivate "higher men": the Napoleons, Goethes, and Shakespeares of the world.
Nietzsche thinks that what is holding back higher men today is
“The Great Online Game is an infinite video game that plays out constantly across the internet. It uses many of the mechanics of a video game, but removes the boundaries. You’re playing as yourself across Twitter, YouTube, Discords, work, projects.”

It feels lonely because consuming media on a couch on a giant screen is often a social experience. For solo media consumption, I feel like smaller screens work just fine for me.

I imagine most AI is still ambient computing, whereas the subset of AI that’s about augmenting intelligence would use AR for UI naturally.
9/ The most helpful gardeners will have a larger role in "seeding" subsequent generations. This way, we hope to create a tight-knit community of gardeners that transcends the speculation-driven mindset that pervades the NFT space today.
short story idea:
- cybersec eng girl defending her database from
- hacker boi
they fall in love through curl requests and error messages
her manager bans his IP and he's lost to the void
interesting take. certain IP is more buoyed by tech (toy story) than raw story (harry potter), but even in cases of the latter, you could say that economic conditions free up creative talent that otherwise might have remained hidden
Just heard on an interesting perspective on a pitch:
Great entertainment IP is built off tech shifts
- Disney - synchronized sound and music for film
- Marvel - 4-color printing press
- Star Wars - Blue screen compositing and motion control photography
- Toy Story - CGI

Twitch Plays Pokémon was one of the most striking examples of bottom up myth-making, though in that case it was IP+tech, rather than a cinematic universe.
