Meadowbrook CC just outside Detroit was probably my biggest surprise last year. Easily one of my favorite courses in a city with a lot of good golf.

Shoreacres is really good - Raynor’s use of the ridge on 11 is the start of an awesome stretch of holes routed about as well anyone could imagine

The more I get into golf course photography the more cart paths bug me! This is the 8th at Blue Mound G&CC, an awesome Raynor Punchbowl - would look so much better if we removed the path (shown with my crude editing skills)!

Lawsonia Links - 4th on my top 10 in WI and the point where from here on out the courses have one major feature in common….elite greens.
I’ve loved Lawsonia for 20+ years, ever since I first went with my now 91 year old father. An awesome course from start to finish.

The Short at Shoreacres…136 yards down hill to a well placed green. This is probably the most picturesque hole on the course yet it isn’t my favorite par 3 out there!
This ended a pretty good 4 round stretch of courses in the north burbs of Chicago for me.

I’m not sure there is a better course in WI for fall colors than West Bend CC! Langford & Moreau designed the front 9 & it’s some of their best work. Kye Goalby had been doing great work on the back 9 the past few yrs. Overall the course is way below the radar and shouldn’t be!

No carts before 3:00 unless…

2. You’re over 90 years old
3. You’re disabled (not like “I have a bad back” disabled)

Lido is so good! It was awesome to play it 1-18 for the first time yesterday. One of the things I like best about it is that despite it being brand new, it just feels old, like it’s been there a long time

My year end stats. I’m most proud of the fact that I hosted 64 people at my home club, giving many people their first round on a Raynor course.

11 at Lawsonia - a cool par 5 in a stretch that starts at 9 and goes: par 5, 3, 5, 3, 5, 3. I love this place! Top 4 favorite in the state for me.

Lido opened yesterday - I’ve been fortunate enough to play it and it’s awesome! I don’t know much about these things but I’d say it easily wins Best New Course award for 2023.

Here’s a look at Kenosha CC. Ross spent significant time here and it really shows. The greens are some of the best in WI and the land has some great natural features (the river & a large ridge). The work

Skokie CC is easily in my top 5 favorite courses in Chicago. The greens are elite and the recent bunker work is so good.

Lake Geneva CC - 1895, Lake Geneva, WI - Robert Foulis. Probably the most exclusive club in WI - really fun course with cool greens, major qwerk, like 3 consecutive par 3’s (9-11) and the double green shown in pics 1&2 (the 7th & 11th). Major bucks on the lake (11 billionaires)

The left is the “before” and the right is the “after” of our Short hole.
1. We restored it the way Raynor left it
2. Removing the run up (that nobody hitting a 7 wood could purposely utilize) was offset by adding a new forward tee

Someone just sent me an article about the completion of the work at Medinah 3 (a course I’ve been critical of). The work looks really cool until you get to this….why would you add artificial OB to a course & also please explain to me how part of the bunker being OB makes sense?

Sand Valley - the Coore & Crenshaw course comes in at number 6 on my favorite WI courses list. I love the thought required out here right from the start.

Lido! (Thread) What a treat it was to get to take part in preview play at what I’m convinced will be one of the best courses in the country when it’s all done and ready.
I’d had a tour about a month ago but actually playing the course was awesome.

RIP Bill Wernecke - my friend who passed away unexpectedly after a rd of golf last week at his home in AZ. He was a member at MKE CC and host to 5x the number of guests as the next member. Bill was generous w/his time, a super smart guy and a true class act. You will be missed.

The 167 yd. par 3, 3rd hole at Kittansett. A unique hole and a good hole. My hot take, as good as this hole is, the 11th is better. I think Kittansett has one of the best sets of par 3’s of any course I’ve played.

Had a request for Shoreacres….one of my all-time favorite courses. Always a treat to play, always in great shape and one of the best walks in golf as far as I’m concerned.

Erin Hills - 7 on my recent top 10 in WI is a tough test, especially if you don’t play the proper tees! I’ve played here probably 45x and walked the property for pictures a bunch - I love a stroll around EH with either my golf bag or my camera bag!

Milwaukee Country Club - 5th on my WI favorites list. CH Alison laid out MCC over a great site and add what I consider elite level bunkering. The back 9 plays over and around the Milwaukee River including on the par 3 12th (shown here).

Eden-The OG is at the home of golf but the newest one might be the 3rd at The Lido. Just 149 yds to this massive green but don’t get caught looking ahead to the 4th (Channel) as this one will require your full attention!

The Leven at Chicago Golf - hole 5
As is the case all over CGC the hole features an awesome green and great bunkering.
The highlight for me is the area between the front left bunker and the green.
This is a really fun short (358 yd) par 4.

Fun fact about Chicago Golf Club…there are 2 Principal’s Nose bunkers (remains of one). The 1st pic shows the remains of one on the 12th hole (Punchbowl) from the CB MacDonald course. The 6th hole (Principal’s Nose) also has one in the fairway short of the green.

The Lido - my favorite course in WI. Like the other top courses on my list, it’s got elite greens but also requires so much thought throughout the round and it’s full of old school, golden age qwerk!
It’s easy to see why the OG was considered a top 3 course in the country.

Who’s playing the Lido this summer?
Here is the 14th, Short at Lido - 129 yards when I played it back in October. Built up with a great moat of sand around it. The green itself has the traditional MacRaynor “thumbprint” but it’s smaller than any I can remember playing.

The Redan at Blue Mound is one of my favs. I think it’s often (unjustly) overlooked by Redans at more highly ranked courses. You can see how severe the right side kicker is & like most greens here, this one has some great interior contours as well. What’s ur fav MacRaynor Redan?

When I talk about good playing conditions this is part of it…25 yds away and putting (5w in this case) is a legit option. Year 5 with our super and this wasn’t an option when he started - gets better every year! We are lucky to have him and his crew at Blue Mound

I played Sedge Valley last weekend and then went out for some pictures. Now the 5th course at Sand Valley, Sedge does not disappoint. The routing uses what’s probably the best piece of land (so far) at the resort and the greens are great without being over-done. Here is 12 and 18

My expectations leading up to my day at NGLA were super high, the kind that often end up with a letdown. BUT this place exceeded those sky high expectations!

Not far from Sand Valley but totally worth the short drive north if you can get on..Stevens Pt CC. So much improved since the tree removal and reno work was completed a few years back.
Great staff and crew out there too!

One aspect of Chicago Golf that doesn’t get talked about enough is the bunkering. I feel like the greens are the star at a lot of MacRaynor courses, and they are at CGC as well! BUT the bunkering here is also so good. Shout out to RGD who did great work out here a couple yrs ago!

Eastward Ho! 1922 - Herbert Fowler apparently borrowed a horse from Myopia Hunt Club to help get around the property to figure out the routing. It worked Herb 👊🏼. Reminds me of White Bear or Pine Hills as they’re all roller coaster rides. Thank you to our great host Gerard👊🏼

The always popular Biarritz template. At Blue Mound its our 3rd hole & IMO easily the toughest 3 on the course.
Hopefully the cross bunker well short of the green will be restored - giving the hole a little more visual interest.

Pine Hills CC - a cool 349/379 yd up hill par 4 with a drop off down the left side of the fairway. Short grass right of the green and a cool land bridge to the next tee.

3rd leg of my 4 round late season run through some of Chicago’s finest was at Onwentsia Club - rich history, cool greens, well bunkered and of course the tipi that’s visible throughout the course. Not pictured is the shower - which is the best shower of any in the area IMO!
