"Salary: You‘ll start on £24,000. Expect a £1,000 increase on your first anniversary in this role and a further £1,000 on your second to reflect your growing contribution."
This is new from
@PenguinUKBooks
and we LOVE it. What a great initiative moving forward.
You’re right. I am a whiny prick.
Or maybe I just want to make life a little easier for those who don’t have the chance to ‘whine’ like me.
This is an institutional problem. We have a right to know if we can afford to live & work in an industry where that often isn’t possible.
Dear publishers.
Never hire anyone who has hounded you about
#BookJobTransparency
.
Anyone worth hiring would be able to negotiate the salary they want.
Also, they all seem like whiny pricks.
You’re welcome.
But also, one of the problems is that when you're fresh out of uni & you love reading & books, 'you don't go into publishing for the money' seems quite reasonable - it's only when you're 5 years in, your friends make double your salary and you want a house that it really hits.
Publishing moves mad
It's a lovely industry BUT I hate how tapped it is at times w/ the sheet ridiculousness of it not doing hardworking ppl justice.
'You don't go into publishing for the money' is what I was told v early on.
It's for a privileged few. And that needs changing.

@penguinrandom
has published an “accelerated inclusion plan”, including a commitment on "radical and urgent action" to make its senior leadership teams representative of UK society. See their targets and policies here:
@JobsAtHarper
@HarperCollins
I'm not interested in the role, I'm interested in helping our followers determine whether applying for this job is even feasible for them given the current climate, relocation costs, and the industry as a whole. We have to do better at making industry salaries more transparent.
I get that you received a lot of applications, but to inform the unsuccessful candidates via a public, mass-broadcast tweet feels a little insensitive to me. These candidates have not only worked hard and crafted their applications, but they are also human beings with feelings.
We've now recruited all of these positions and will be announcing our new team next week.
And we're sorry but with so many applicants we've had to make the decision that we can't tell everyone who's been unsuccessful or provide any feedback.
I don't get this. And
@JobsAtHarper
I mean absolutely no disrespect, I love you guys and think you do great work. But discussing the salary offline helps absolutely no-one except that one person.
#BookJobTransparency
helps so many people and opens many more doors.
i know we are all having a good laugh about this - but actually, this is really serious and ridiculous.
this is exactly what we're shouting about every day and fighting for, along with

@neevkm

@katierpacker
publishing must do better
Re my last tweet - like I said yesterday, it's about being the change you want to see in the world.
@JobsinBooks
have 17.4k followers,
@thebookseller
has 202.7k. In comparison, we have a measly 8k, but we refuse to share a job without a salary. Every little helps.
Look, I'm going to be real honest with you guys here. For quite some time, I denied my white middle-class privilege. Getting into publishing was really, really hard, and I was adamant that my status hadn't helped me any more than anyone else. /THREAD
🌟It's here! 🌟
As promised, my Publishing Story is now live on PubInterns. I hope you find this useful, and as always - please ask questions! I love to hear other peoples' thoughts and stories - sharing is, after all, caring.
#WorkInPublishing
a couple of things on
@PublishingTea
- whilst we know now that they are okay, the real immediate concern was that they had been reprimanded for sharing honest, valid truths about our industry and that it had affected their livelihood - this is quite worrying.
you deserve to be paid a decent salary that reflects the work you do - we all work above and beyond the salaries we are paid. 20K is not enough, and anything less is barbaric.
We'd like to see salaries on ALL job adverts (from entry-level to way on up high), more inclusive hiring, and better guidance on progression, ambition, and moving around in publishing - it's not just a ladder.
hi everyone, just a head's up - i'm no longer retweeting or sharing job posts that don't have a clear salary on. gotta do what i gotta do.
#BookJobTransparency
Important announcement I’ve just realised it’s our birthday!! Happy two years since I started this account out of boredom and frustration trying to find a job. Hope ya all have a great our birthday x

#CLetterTips
Saw a great badge on the tube this morning. ‘Will work for books’ it said. It made me smile... but rest assured, whilst this is a nice sentiment it is NOT a valid source if income. You deserve to be paid for work, work experience and internships. Books are not money. Byeeeee
Apparently it's
#LivingWageWeek
, so this is as good an opportunity as any to remind publishers/employers/people who create internships, that your workers are entitled a living wage for the work they do for you. Cool. Thanks. Bye.
Right guys. Let's talk about this.
⭐️Firstly - think about everything you've done that could be constituted experience? Got a blog? Worked in retail? Worked for your nan's neighbour on reception?
THIS IS A THREAD.
@RingwoodPublish
Hi Ringwood - we know that these are unprecedented and difficult times, but 3-6 months unpaid is still really not okay, especially as given the job description you are asking candidates to do work that should be paid. Would you consider reviewing this?
Hi guys, someone's mum just emailed my work asking for work experience. Please don't ask your mum to get you work experience. If you want work experience, go out and ask for it yourself. Thanks xo
Hey
@JobsinBooks
- massive respect for you guys, but let's be honest, you have the power to do this due to your position in the industry. EVERYONE knows The Bookseller, so you could really change the face of our industry by enforcing salary transparency on all of your ads.
@hamzajahanzeb
@thebookseller
@HachetteCareers
Hello Hamza, thanks for flagging this! We support the inclusion of salaries on our jobs adverts massively, of course, but we cannot enforce it. However, we have added the salary as shown on Hachette on the job advert :)
Publishing Interns has always been a place to offer support and guidance, and to fight against the injustices of the publishing industry. We acknowledge our privilege, not only in our employment situations, but in the colour of our skin in a predominantly white industry.
Hello everyone, there is a hashtag circulating called
#MyCareerPath
. We're calling on all the people that have followed us for some time and now

to share your career path to show all the different routes into publishing (especially if you've got something diff)
*cries in typical publishing starting salary*
but seriously, if you are fluent in french, don't be a moron. most execs don't even have this salary. bonne chance!
This needs to be better -
@thebookseller
you are doing fab things championing discussions around this, now can you look at your own jobs page and take the necessary steps to make salaries transparent?
right lads, here it is. The dream job.
Not only do you get to work with the best team in the business (not biased), in the best part of publishing (I love publicity) but you get to look at my face all day every day.
APPLY NOW AND BE MY NEW BEST FRIEND.
Hi everyone. If you're feeling weird today... if you're starting a new job, a new work experience, a new internship, or trying to find your place in a current one - remember that it's okay to not be okay. We're all feeling a little strange. Rely on your peers and ask questions.

This thread is exactly why we are losing great talent and diversity in this industry. Just the mere cost of interviewing is too much to bear. Make interviews more accessible and bloody PAY YOUR INTERNS.
You wanna fix inclusivity in this industry? How about not treating regional/working class/non-Londoners like their efforts and money and time don't matter?
And no, the answer isn't to stop inviting us to interviews. It's to treat us with some form of decency.
Cheers.
Most people go into publishing early in their careers without a strong enough awareness of how it will impact their lives (financially, socially) in 5-10 years.
We repeatedly say that at a job interview when they ask 'Do you have any questions', answering 'no' is the wrong answer. Here are some suggested questions you can ask - though not all will be applicable to entry-level.
Great question! I tend to think of Marketing as 'behind-the-scenes' whilst Publicity is 'front-line'. Essentially, Marketing is the stuff you pay for, whilst Publicity is the stuff you pray for (not my line).
Here we are! Good morning
#WorkInPublishing
week! As usual, my DMs are open, and I really fancy a good chat about publishing this week - so get in touch, ask questions, and above all, be curious and resilient. Have a great week everyone.
Hi everyone, apols for the radio silence recently. I've been reading a lot about salary transparency and expectations, and have had some questions about discussing salary in a cover letter - would some guidance on this be useful?
Well, this. Why would you want to work in publishing when the starting salary in comparison to your peers is meagre, and you often have to pay for the privilege of even having an interview?
I will keep banging this drum. The love of books ain't it.
When I was at PRH I recall a senior leader doing a school visit and being asked by one of the kids why anyone would want to work in publishing at when they could work in app development and literally earn double? The starting salaries are a massive part of this.
Personal story time! On Friday I had a blood test (woe is me) and to distract me, the phlebotomist asked me about my job. So I told her, I'm a publicist in publishing.
And she said: "Oh you must make really good money!"
Reader, I laughed in her face.
#FutureBook19
To keep everyone updated, in case you didn't know or had questions - many publishing companies have currently suspended recruitment at all levels due to Covid-19.
Please don't let this put you off publishing! Use this time to perfect your CV, cover letter and learn skills 💪
Fyi friends, I am off on my summer holiday (finally) and giving myself the break I really need, so PubInterns will be inactive until my return. Maybe when I’m back salaries on job adverts will be a legal requirement. See you on the other side ☀️
salaries we love to see
again i ask (and particularly relevant in light of today's bookseller)
if usborne can do it, why can't you?

#jobsinpublishing
#workinpublishing
I'm pleased to see publishers taking steps to address the cost of living crisis, especially raising entry level salaries, but this doesn't exactly address the fact that they need to do this in the first place because a publishing salary is unsustainable.
Publishing is facing “industry-wide burnout” according to a survey conducted by The Bookseller, which revealed 89% of staffers had experienced stress during the course of their work over the last year, while 69% reported burnout:
Yes, the news is true, I am back from holiday and I am GLOWING. Hit me up with all your publishing questions, career goals, and job adverts. Did we solve
#BookJobTransparency
yet? Have unpaid internships been abolished? A girl can hope...
lads - here's your heads up that i am going on my jollys. this has been a weird ole pandemic 6 months and the last couple of months especially tiring. so i am off to get some sea and country air and will see you all on the other side.
You asked for it. I talk you though all the jobs you can do in publishing whilst eating a wagon wheel. Yes that is literally it.

this reminds me of the time i nearly cried in a publishing interview because i'd got (read: forked out savings for) the train to london AGAIN and i so desperately wanted a job and ended up having a rant about how hard it was to get into publishing
Just received this from the lovely team at Penguin Business! Perfect for all of you at the very start of your careers who need a little guidance (I know I definitely could have done with this!)
We’re hiring!
