In our study, we showed that intestinal Methanosarcinales have reduced genomes, are obligately dependent on #H2 and methylated compounds for #CH4 production, and have lost the upper part of the Wood–Ljungdahl pathway and membrane complexes. @FEMSmicro

The eukaryotic phylum Heterolobosea includes #flagellates, #amoebae, and amoeboflagellates, notably the brain-eating amoeba Naegleria fowleri. New transcriptome data reveal the #evolution of Heterolobosea and two instances of genetic code alteration.

The separation of redox reactions over large distances in cable #bacteria, along with the transfer of electrons along the cell filaments or minerals, might represent a novel energy conservation mechanism for subsurface microbes. @FrontMicrobiol

The double-helix topology of #DNA affects all aspects of DNA function. This topology is governed by DNA topoisomerases, but most knowledge comes from studies on #bacteria or #eukarya. #Archaea offer a unique perspective on these enzymes. @wileymicrobio

#Microbes in the hot springs of the Kuril Islands are diverse. Cyanobacteriota and Chloroflexota dominate microbial mats at temperatures up to 60 °C. The #archaea Metallosphaera and Thermoplasma are abundant in acidic hot springs. @BioMedCentral

It is not surprising that the most studied microbes are human #pathogens or those present in the healthy microbiome. However, we also need to study those responsible for the planet's health, such as #methanogens, methanotrophs, and O₂-producing #plankton

The transition to #endosymbiosis alters the #genomes of microbes undergoing this process. Initially, genomes expand but later become reduced, with the loss of some metabolic pathways. A case study is based on the genus Arsenophonus. @CurrentBiology
