@ianbremmer Looks fake. I would bet it is. Lot of the classic marks: -Why is he filming? -Zoomed in, shaky, bad focus when you need it -Looks “off” Wild if it’s true - but I lean very much into the “fake” camp.

But if it didn’t used to be. And since, on average, Americans move less - they just stay put. Foot traffic recently is negative for CA (ie people moving out) But they’re likely buoyed by two things: -Big pop is just born there and stays (see below) -Immigration from Mexico/SA etc keeping pop relatively stable/incr.

How I see the arguments playing out: A: “This was reckless and irresponsible. There should have been a plan.” DOGE: “Look, if you don’t just rip the bandaid off, nothing ever gets done. We’d set a six-month timeline, but something always pushes it to a year, ad infinitum.” That line of thinking would backfire if you extend it to ending the war in Afghanistan (a major blemish on Biden’s record).

@MdBergeron >Mexico invades Texas >Murders civilians, bombs hospitals >Says it’s their territory According to you, the US should be sanguine with this decision. Got it. 🙃

Well because I don’t think rational people believe he’s doing that. Not even a fraction of it. Musk et all are worrying about “the country is on the brink of insolvency” (Good to worry!) while the party prepares a budget bill that would spend $5 trillion+ on tax breaks. Akin to doctor saying “you’ve gotta stop smoking” while lighting up.

@Nemtastic1 Eh I’m just not that sympathetic to the argument. I mean, sure, I agree with “he’s not going to steal my money,” but to the extent that money isn’t still a motivator? I haven’t seen it (re-China).

A ban might prove to be difficult. If we find out an existing food suppresses it, what’s to stop them from adding it to everything? Sure, certain added “chemicals” might be easy to ban - but what if it turns out to be something naturally occurring? Think of food labeled “nitrate free” that just get the nitrate from natural sources (ie celery powder). Just difficult to do in practice.

@haridigresses Actually .... We probably did something similar by accident with fructose decades ago: it does not lead to the release of GIP1 (note that dual glp1/gp1 drugs eg tirzepatide are more effective for weight loss than semaglutide )

Is “defied” really the right term here? I should probably read more about it. I think *broad* student loan forgiveness was bad both ways: pragmatically/politically (ie helps high earners more + keeps costs high & gained no electorate share) But - wasn’t the court saying: “Can’t do this by using door #1” and Biden admin was like “Ok, let’s try door #2?” He didn’t just do it anyway.

@Yair_Rosenberg I asked a similar question a while back, which amounted to: Why not give the public an executive summary of the funding (re-USAID)? Is it 80% “waste?” Why not give the breakdowns?

Let’s forget about the distinction between “fraud” and waste for a second on USAID. There have been numerous examples of spending that, on its face, seems like something the US should not do. The subset of people keen on viewing/sharing these tweets has concluded: “shut the whole thing down” or Elon’s: “it’s all worms.” On the other side, there are numerous examples of spending that, on its face, seem good (vaccines, food, aids prevention etc.). The people who view this collection of tweets ends up concluding: “this is a good agency” or “this is US soft power.” My question is: Has anyone done a true compare of cost on the “good” programs vs “wasteful” programs? If we’re spending 80% of USAID on feeding poor, vaccines, aids prevention etc. I don’t think that’s a bad ratio. But what is it?
