It’s now clear that William and Kate’s ill-fated Caribbean tour last month wasn’t an outlier caused by poor planning. This is now likely to be the pattern for royal visits to the region & I expect they’ll peter out. 2022 looks like being a pivotal year.

William’s comment in the Bahamas about respecting ‘your decisions about your future’. This has always been the Palace’s line. Indeed, his grandfather, Prince Philip, set it out more bluntly during a press conference in Canada in 1969 (below, from my Monarchy & the End of Empire).

The Palace should be careful about briefing in this way. It isn’t Charles’s role to make his own foreign policy. The future of the Commonwealth and the relations of the Realms to Britain are matters for the governments concerned, not the royal family.

I have a letter in The Times this morning. To be clear, this isn’t about whether one supports republicanism or the monarchy. It’s simply that the other Commonwealth Realms are entirely independent, and it’s not up to the Palace or the UK to determine their constitutional future.

@redhistorian There’s also a perverse hope that because Johnson shares some of Churchill’s faults - he’s irresponsible, erratic, self-indulgent, & disloyal - some magic will turn these characteristics into those of a great leader. But the wand’s been waved & the pumpkin’s still a pumpkin.
