This was one of a handful of things that radicalized me way back in the early days of the Internet, before people tended even to think of these kinds of things in those terms. I kind of got the sense as a young teenager that my odds of getting HIV, even if I did everything right, were like 50-50. When I learned the truth I felt at first confused and then sort of used, like obviously the government and the health institutions thought of the fears and anxieties of the majority as an instrument.
